When brands can no longer afford to be active on Facebook.

I'm on record of having a piss-poor attitude about Facebook, but try not to let that sway you reading this story. Because instead of pundits predicting a mass exodus from Facebook... this details how it's happening. Not necessarily for giant brands, but from the smaller ones with less money to burn.

The good news is that I won't be able to share this for another 9 months, so humor me.

So despite some initial scepticism about the provenance I've confirmed that today's +Snapchat data breach, http://goo.gl/lm1VR0, of 4.6 million records—just over half the Snapchat user base—is legitimate.

A quick trawl through the list has got multiple hits amongst my own friends group, including some I didn't know were on Snapchat—sorry guys. Anyway...

I'm now taking an initial look at the data, and interestingly there doesn't seem to be any international numbers in the leaked database, they're all US numbers with the bulk of the user names are from the greater New York and greater San Francisco areas—as you might expect.

My assumption is that whomever compiled the database was using the find_friends exploit recently published by #GibsonSecurity, http://goo.gl/iJOMdp, and didn't want to be bothered with non-US numbers. But you never know, there might be something else to it.

More soon…  #databreach   #security   #hack   #bigdata

As the year is winding down, it seems like a good time to share the best "best of" lists from 2013. I'll kick things off with this one about notable social media activities that occurred this year. Sadly (or perhaps not) there are a few I'm blissfully unaware of.

Tomorrow is a new year. Do I keep the new look I've been cultivating, or not?

No where to run to. No where to hide. Welcome to the future. It's a bit scary at times.
