The Nigerian Writers’. What’s next?
It’s an evening and weekend of an overdose of celebration for me (Godwin 3ple-i) and my colleague (Nathaniel Apheyso) in literature. My colleague’s literary work have just been published whereas I have successfully completed my second work in the Silver Lining series, thankful to all who have supported and encourage me as a person and Houseofklass my business entity for the past eight years. How time flies? I can remember very clearly the evening of March 1st 2005, when the secretary to E & M Chambers now Ivory solicitors (located at 375 Ikorodu Road, Maryland Bus-Stop, Lagos, Nigeria) called informing me that the business name – Houseofklass Enterprise, Houseofklass for short is now registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of Nigeria. That call was the bold step that ushered me into the business world of Entrepreneurship. That call also changed my thinking, mindset and orientation of the business world. Also, I was and would ever remain exceptionally grateful to God for his unconditional love, grace and opportunity to live again after standing face – to – face with death eight years ago.
Both I – Godwin 3ple-i and Nathaniel Apheyso are US self-published authors from Africa’s most populated and anticipated most corrupt nation on the African continent. While my book Silver Lining by Godwin 3ple-i was published with AuthorHouse, Nathaniel Apheyso’s Love is Treason was published with Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing aka amazon kdp. From a distant, as well as passersby, can all attestate to the atmosphere and feeling of personal achievement in a sector where writers are perceive as a ‘nobody’ alongside countless rejections from the ‘big names’ in publishing in Nigeria simply because we are yet – to – be identified brands. In the celebration mood, Nathaniel and I upgraded our discussion like never before. Discussing issues of piracy to copyrights, royalties to book marketing, promotion and possibly endorsements as at when due. Nathaniel couldn’t hide his fears and feelings towards these sensitive issues raised most importantly as it affect new writers especially the Nigeria writers which popped up the question – What’s Next?
Still on the same page with Nathaniel, I remembered a young writer (Segun Iseyemi) like myself whose scripts are yet to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Yes, my script has been transformed into a published work and that does not mean that my work is the best or outstanding. It is God’s grace and perseverance. I want to believe that there are many playwrights, poets and prose writers swimming in this statement – ‘ writers live in penury ’
As if Segun’s and the many unpublished scripts were not enough, my encounter with the art representative from the British Council, Lagos, Nigeria some five years ago who said to me – ‘you are not baba’ flashed back to my memory. I cannot remember her name but the drama still remain fresh. Though confused and astonished, with her response, my inquisitive body language led the British Council art representative to expatiate on her response. She further said; ‘you are not Professor Wole Soyinka and as such, I do not think that the British Council would want to work or associate with you. She continues, what’s your academic qualification? I had barley completed my sentence to her question when she rudely interrupted saying; young man, the British Council cannot work or associate with you. She walked out on me. The rest is history. Today, the story has changed. I am humbled and thankful to my parents, siblings, friends, fans and God. No doubt, I am yet to be an identified brand in literature however, I have a very strong believe that the Nigerian writers deserved to be recognised, appreciated and celebrated.
I do not know why I am doing this. I still do not know what have come over me. I seize this opportunity through this medium to call out on all literature lovers, promoters and interested individuals to join in this noble journey to uplift this noble profession – writing. However, once you are moved, please, do not hold back. This is a call. Harden not your heart. Together, Nigerians would begin to respect writing as a noble profession like every other profession.
Thank you.

Dear Saint Valentine,
It is a while since we both read each other’s letter. As it gladden my heart writing to you, I want you to know that words are not just enough expressing my gratitude and how I feel penciling down these few words of mine from my heart even though your honey mood have unconsciously created a vacuum in my relationship affairs. My heart has not stopped leaping for joy after receiving this information ( that you are the patron saint of couples especially young couples engaged who would be getting married. Before the sun set at dawn ) and reading your autobiography. I am happy and indeed blessed.
My apologies that you are receiving this letter this late. It is not intentional. Hope you have not forgotten the saying of the Creator in Ecclesiastics 3 because one of Nigeria’s finest sensational diva and 2012 big brother house mate Susan Harvey aka Goldie die on your anniversary day. Secondly, and all the way in South Africa, the amputee athlete Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend also on your anniversary day. Why saying that their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed to fine peace in God’s boson, these sad events got me thinking…
Other reason of writing to you is that I am beginning to worry about your honey mood. It is taking longer than expected. Pardon my worry feelings. I want you to know that I have too many questions and unasked questions. Besides being worried about your return, my heart bleeds not for anything but for the cries of endless aborted babies, geometric rise in divorce, physical assaults and brutalism in many marriages and homes especially on your anniversary day which I want to believe is not what you preached before this trip of yours that is no difference with the fourteen survivals in the titanic movie of April fourteen.
Saint Valentine, are you aware that my bosom female and male friend have decided not to get involved in any committed relationship with the opposite sex. They both believe that every male and female they come across should be ‘used and dumped’ like a worthless item because none is worthless because of too many heart breaks. Is this not a barbaric perception? I do not want to be called to the witness box to testify so here this – February 14 now records the highest rate of heartbreaks, rape, adultery, sexual assaults / intercourse and unfulfilled promises.
Saint Valentine, this is my unasked question to you – Where is Love? How is Love? What is Love? I do not want either a dictionary, thesaurus or encyclopedia definition of Love. Many marriages and families are poles apart because of the society definition of Love. Why?It just occur to me that when replying to this letter if you would ever write me back that you should please reply to this above address. I decided to relocate to my new abode because every kind of betrayal is closed in F.A.C.T. (Fidelity Accommodating Communicate Tolerate) city. I would be like the unfaithful servant who did not trade his talent once I did not inform you that after my long wait for your return, I embarked on Love search.
My Love search was memorable and worth all my efforts. In the cause of my Love search, I did author a romantic and comic Love book titled – Silver Lining by Godwin 3ple-i . As my Love search did continue, it was revealed to me that Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, die for Love. Jack in Titanic was frozen to death because of Love. Samson the strongest man was blindfolded and killed because of Love. I was amazed when your name was on the list of individuals who die because of Love. May be it is another saint Valentine not yours because I love to get a reply to this letter. My Love search did come to an end when Jesus Christ, my friend and savior of the universe, the son of God, the second person in the trinity, the great healer, lover and provider die on the cross with his arm stretched wide open because of HIS unconditional LOVE for the entire human race.
Saint Valentine, at this juncture, I would want to stop. But before stopping, here below is my twenty six alphabetical LOVE words I self-created to help me in my personal renewal for I now believe that LOVE is: Appreciation, Beautiful, Contagious, Delight, Enduring, Forgiveness, God, Honest, Inspirational, Joy, Kind, Learning, Memorable, Noble, Obedient, Prosperous, Quest, Responsible, Simplicity, Tenacious, Universal, Value, Welcomes, X…, You and Zealous.
What is your LOVE word? Which LOVE word is appealing to you? Spread the LOVE words.
I LOVE you.
Yours truly,Godwin 3ple-i

The Power of Words by George Smiley
In the beginning the WORD already existed...The WORD was the source of life... John 1:1 - 4.
The creation of the world from God's mouth is no longer news. And that Jesus cursed the fig tree not to produce fruits also is no more news. The news is this: we all fail to realise that for every word said, there is a resulting effect. Proverbs 18:21 -- What you say can preserve life or destroy it, so you must accept the consequences of your words. Do you know that there is power in the spoken word? Mark 11:23 -- I assure you that whoever tells this hill to get up and throw itself in the sea and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.
Very good illustrations are the words of the Prophet Ezekiel. Ezekiel 37:4, 7, 9 - 10 -- He said, prophesy to the bones. Tell these dry bones to listen to the Word of the Lord -- so I prophesied as I had been told. While I was speaking, I heard a rattling noise, and the bones began to join together -- God said to me, mortal man, prophesy to the wind. Tell the wind... so I prophesied as I had been told. Breath entered the bodies and they lived. What we get most times result from the words we say to ourselves or to others. Matthew 12:37 -- your words will be used to judge you -- to declare you either innocent or guilty. Hear this, the results you get today are from what you said yesterday. And tomorrow's results start today. What are the things you have just said? What are you saying right now? What will you say in an hour or two before today is over? I want to tell you how powerful words are. Some years back, I had watched a recorded video message of Bishop T.D. Jakes with the title 'The Ten Commandments of Working in a Hostile Environment' and I did what he said. I had applied for a position in a celebrity magazine as an Advert executive. Then I began saying to myself 'I am the right person for this job' continuously from the first day I had seen the vacant advertisement. And when I got the job, I was not surprised, rather I was thankful.
Words are seeds. Be mindful and thoughtful of your words. Have you ever thought of why there is a dictionary and a thesaurus? Begin today to select words that create a vision of what you want and what you will become. 1 Peter 3:10 -- As the scripture says, if you want to enjoy life and wish to see good times, you must keep from speaking evil and stop telling lies. I leave you with these words from an anonymous author: A careless word may kindle strife. A cruel word may wreck a life. A bitter word may hate instil. A brutal word may smile and kill. A gracious word may smooth the way. A joyous word may light the day. A timely word may lessen stress. A lovely word may heal and bless. Romans 10:10 -- for it is by our faith that we are put right with God; it is by our confession that we are saved.
