The Cauldron Presents: A Season Without Rain
SYNOPSIS: Jacob Miller is angry with himself, the world, and God. Life seems so unfair, so cruel, that he can’t imagine why anyone even tries. After having a nervous breakdown, selling his business, filing for bankruptcy, having a baby, and finding out he owes over twenty grand in taxes, he is hardly happy to be alive. In the span of a year, Jacob will discover three very important things about life. Things can always be worse. There really is a God. And if you wait long enough anything can change.
A Season Without Rain explores that gray area between poverty and middle class life, the struggling underclass for whom there are no advocates. A powerful story told in a modern, everyday voice that will entrench readers in Jacob Miller’s black world of anger, hate, resentment, lies, and violence.
A Season Without Rain is Joe Schwartz’s first novel. His previous short story collections Joe’s Black T-Shirt, The Games Men Play, and The Veiled Prophet of St. Louis have been acclaimed vulgar as Bukowski and visceral as Carver. Joe lives and works in St. Louis happily writing stories exclusively about the Gateway City.
A St. Louis native, I write exclusively about the Gateway City. I prefer the style of fiction deemed transgressive fiction. That is my stories protagonists generally find a solution to their problems through either illicit or illegal means. I personally prefer stories told through a criminal's point-of-view. It is never the crime that fascinates me so much as the motivation to do it and the terrible, almost predictable outcomes to such actions. Just as I have an expectation of writing to be read I believe that it is as important, if not more so, that you as a reader should have the expectation of being entertained as you read. Anything less is such a disappointment. Life is short. Stories are forever. -Joe

Jules loves old B movie monster films, the culture and art of Asia and childish humour, and decided to put them altogether when writing his new book, Hetty and the Yeti. Jules has also worked as a teacher and for a wildlife organisation and would strongly advise anyone against working with either children or animals. The Cauldron Presents: The Cry of the Machi
'CRY OF THE MACHI A Suffolk murder Mystery'
I have always found it impossible to believe that, over the centuries, countless millions of people throughout the world (of all ages, races, creeds and convictions) who have seen or experienced inexplicable phenomena can be totally wrong. Equally, their claims have invariably been forcibly disputed by armies of sceptics who flatly refuse to give any credence to their assertions, often cruelly labelling those who have witnessed anything connected to the paranormal as 'cranks', 'madman' or some other such crudely derogatory term.
The disbelievers will go to great, often quite hostile, lengths to challenge all forms of the paranormal, supernatural, psychic, mystical or occult and will call upon much scientific evidence to disprove the existence of anything that might be ghostly, phantom, spectral or 'other-worldly'. However, despite a mass of science, people still continue to have all forms of unearthly experiences. Some of the religious pagan rituals of so called 'uncivilised' societies that try to accommodate this.
The Mapuche Indians of Chile come to terms with the unknown by viewing life as a constant struggle between the powers of good and evil. They have a dualist perception of the universe, viewing the cosmos as two opposite and complementary worlds in one. One world is the natural world, represented by the earth with its people. The other is a supernatural world which is magical and spiritual represented by the sky. The spiritual world is Wenumapu, and is an organized and balanced region between the clouds and the cosmos. Here the gods, spirits and ancestors live. Next to it is the opposite, the 'Anka-wenu', a disorganized, chaotic space next to the clouds where evil spirits the Wekufes live. These cause illnesses and suffering to mankind. The Machi spiritual leaders keep in contact with the gods and are responsible for combating the power of Wekufu (evil).
It is from research, in Chile, upon the religion and culture of the 'Mapuches' that I drew inspiration to incorporate and modify 'the concept' of the power of a Machi, working through the supernatural forces across the cosmos, into my novel 'CRY OF THE MACHI A Suffolk Murder Mystery'. It is, essentially, a conflict between good and evil in which the supernatural plays a very significant part and questions the wisdom of ignoring it !

The Hot Cauldron Presents: My Beginning by LaQuette
Hello everyone,Thanks to Lachelle, for having me on at the Hot Cauldron. My name is LaQuette, and I am an author of romantic fiction.I have been creating fictional stories to express and address all of the issues of love since I was a young child. Writing for me has always been my primary means of self-expression. As a child growing up in a very conservative household, children did not have a voice, and if they dared speak, they were quickly chastised for it. My writing was a means of safely expressing my thoughts and feelings without fear of censorship. Within the lines of my writings only my perspective mattered, only my concerns were focused upon, and only I could make the decision about what was appropriate or not. To this day writing remains the primary means of expression by which I am most comfortable.I fell in love with romantic fiction at the age of sixteen when my friend handed me a Harlequin romance novel to read. I asked my friend why she was handing me one of these “silly romance” books to read. She asked if I had ever read one before and when I shook my head no, told me I should give it a try before I jumped to conclusions. So I went home and started reading, and continued to read until I finished the book in one sitting. The name of that book was The Devil's Price (Harlequin Presents, No 852) by Carole Mortimer (I still have that same copy of the book which has been worn from repeated rereading over more than twenty years). Ms. Mortimer’s book was so amazing to my sixteen-year-old mind that I began reading any romance novel that I could get my hands on after that.Fast-forward all these years later and I am still that same sixteen-year-old girl who fell in love with love and is now crafting her own love stories. I write as a reader. I write creating stories that I myself would want to read. I try to include the realisms of love into my work, because when I read a book, that’s what I wish to see.Contrary to what some might believe, good romantic fiction is not saccharine fantasy. Good romantic fiction is composed of all of the intense emotional hills and valleys that love itself possesses. It can be gritty and raw, unforgiving and bold, tender and sensual, as well as blazing and titillating. It makes us hurt when it’s failing, and it makes us climb emotional heights when it is soaring. Take a moment to read an excerpt from my novel, “My Beginning,” and see just how conflicting and beautiful love can really be. Happy reading,LaQuette
Excerpt from, My Beginning by LaQuetteGenesis noticed something different about him. Usually Drew was very calm and jovial around her. He rarely made things intense, but tonight there was a sense of power behind his eyes. When she finally reached him, he said nothing; he simply wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her to him. Before Genesis had a chance to react, he lifted one hand from her waist and secured it in her loose locks. His mouth fastened onto hers making her moan from somewhere deep within her.Her arms lifted of their own accord and latched around his neck drawing her closer into his web. Drew tore his mouth away from hers and found the tender spot between her neck and her shoulder. He must have sensed her legs giving way because the next thing Genesis knew she was hoisted up with her legs around his waist. Drew was holding her so tightly she could feel his heart beating as if it were in her own chest.Genesis was drifting in the sea of pleasure Drew was skillfully creating. She was almost completely immersed in the passion Drew was inciting when she heard a familiar voice in her mind. No man will ever want you, you’ll never be able to please any man, you’re pitiful. She pressed herself deeper into Drew’s body, hoping his possessive kisses would chase away her tormentor’s words. She was holding onto Drew tightly, but the incessant sound in her head—first a small whisper, now a full grown scream—began pulling her attention away from Drew. You are wasting his time; you can’t give him what he needs. Sooner or later, he’s going to toss you to the side too.She pulled herself out of Drew’s arms so quickly that she almost fell backward into the water. Drew reached out and swiftly steadied her on two feet.“Drew, I can’t do this,” she said as she tried to step away from him, but he pulled her back into his embrace.“Why not Genesis?” he asked as he moved a hand back into her hair, trapping her against him, forcing her to look up into burning chocolate eyes. “Don’t stand here and tell me that you don’t want me, because I can feel your desire for me,” he pulled her head roughly to him, taking command of her lips, forcing them open and sweeping his smooth tongue inside her mouth. “Hell,” he breathed against her lips as he took one final lap before tilting her head to looking into her eyes, “I can taste it.”He was correct, she couldn’t deny she wanted him, but as her mother had told her often, she was never too old for her wants to hurt her, and not having Drew would certainly hurt her.“Drew, a sexual liaison between the two of us would not work, it would blow up in our faces, and I don’t want to cause friction between you and my brothers.”“You think this is just about sex to me Genesis?” he asked, a hard edge coloring his voice. “Understand this; I am a world renowned recording artist. I could have a different chick in my bed every night of the week if I chose to. If I just wanted a piece of ass, all I would have to do is send a one-word text and I would have free pussy waiting for me to fuck at my leisure.”His harsh tone made her close her eyes while an unexpected shiver crawled up her back. Why did the thought of him sleeping with someone else suddenly make Genesis cold?“I don’t want to just have sex with you; I want to be with you”Her unused voice cracked as she said his name. “Drew,” she swallowed, attempting to lubricate the walls of her dry mouth and throat, “you don’t know me well enough to want to be with me. I am the woman that has been closest to you in proximity during a very difficult part of your life. It’s only natural that you would have a confused affection for me. It will wear off in a matter of time.”There it was, her rational brain had finally decided to put in an appearance. That line sounded almost believable to her.“Bullshit,” he said. The lines of his face became sharper as he spoke. “You want me just as much as I want you. Why are you fighting me?”He still held her tightly, her skin burning where his hands made contact. Why the hell was her body reacting to this man’s anger this way? She should be enraged, she should be mad as hell and telling Drew where the hell he could step off. Instead, her skin was humming with anticipation of his touch with a growing hunger that was making the walls of her womb clench. Dammit!“Drew I am a medical professional who has been made responsible for your care. She kept her eyes closed as she spoke, hoping to get her body back under her control instead of his. “It is unethical for me to allow anything romantic to transpire while you are under my care.”Drew shook his head. She knew her reason was valid, she knew her words gave the impression of respectability coated in veracity. But even though she was doing her best impression of reliable, above-board medical professional, Drew’s tight features poked gaping holes through her perfectly painted picture.“You’re lying,” he said through clenched teeth. “This has nothing to do with medical ethics Genesis, tell me the truth, or I’m going to keep coming after you, and eventually you will give in to me. This thing between us is too strong for you to ignore it forever. We’ve been dancing around this chemistry between us since my mother’s funeral; I’m tired of playing the ignore-it-and-it-will-go-away game. Either you come clean with me, or I’m just going to wear you down.”Drew pulled her close to him and planted his mouth atop hers once more. She began to lose herself in his kiss; just as before she crumbled in his arms becoming almost as fluid as the water surrounding them. When he was satisfied that he had proven his point, he ripped his mouth away from hers leaving her mouth searching for that lost heat.“That is not confused affection that is just plain old lust Genesis. Has it been that long since you’ve experienced that, or maybe you’ve never experienced it at all?”

What would you do if you had the power to heal but it only brought you personal destruction and ruin? Would you still use it?
When a street shaman meets a horrific demise on Dr. Austin MacLean’s ER table, Austin soon discovers a raw and irrepressible power. But when this power inflicts traumatic effects on three chronically ill children, families rush to accuse him, his colleagues condemn him, and the police begin to investigate in this affluent New Jersey beach town....and so do others when the children begin to show inconceivable progress.Dara Kleows, a local reporter, is the first to connect the children’s gradual healings back to Austin. The two develop a deep bond but Austin remains uncertain as to what this beautiful woman wants. Is she just after a story, or more? There are those who covet Austin’s “power” and at any cost, while Dara is more concerned by Austin’s headlong march toward his own perdition.

When Austin looked up, he thought he saw a faint corona flicker around DJ. It started growing ever-brighter, and he tried to step back but was pulled closer by some indelible force—an atmospheric hollow drawing his humming body into the eye of an invisible storm. An ear-popping decompression was followed by an overpowering energy surge, his brain and muscle masses engorging with a metamorphic euphoria. Experiencing that spine-chilling “conduit” feeling, he swore as if he were about to be struck by some unseen force. And when DJ looked up, Austinsensed the imminent electrical surge was meant for the boy.

When Angels Fall- The Re Release
When an ancient entity decides that his punishment in hell has gone on long enough, all hell breaks loose in Gainesville, FL. David Thornbrook, a young hot exec at of Thornbrook, Hall and Caine is about to face the most horrific scandal of his career. With embezzlement looming to destroy him, the spoiled brat has no where to turn. In not listening to his father's warnings of saving for a rainy day, this young man's disgrace and irresponsibility comes face to face with the governing board of the company. However, when Margonne, a cursed angel, hears of his plight, he decides that his sentence down below is over. Stepping into David's life, Margonne exacts his own special brand of revenge through murder, lust and extreme debauchery. This character sets the firm on its backside in a way that would make Milton Waddams (Office Space) proud.
So if you want a read that is salacious, powerful and overflowing with deception, this read is for you. However, you don't have to take my word for it. Here are some of the current reviews for this hellacious tale of white collar crime at its most sinful.

Format: Kindle EditionThere were some seriously violent and scary situations in this book that I was just, 'oh my goodness'. David Thornbrook is faced with an embezzlement scandal that destroys his family name and company Thornebrook, Hall & Caine. Margonne is a demon who guards hell’s gates and tortures those that enter hell. David attempts suicide and Margonne possesses his body. The new David is cruel and abusive. This story is shocking and sexually charged. David meets JoAnn who isn't at all what she seems. The writing is really good. The story immediately draws you in and I didn't want to put it down because I was so curious as to what could possibly happen next. It is a short book and fast read. It was really good and then it ends abruptly. I eagerly await the continuation of this story. 4 stars.

First time in reading this author and discovered her at a event. Love encountering new to me authors after reading description of this one was quite intrigued. Stepping away from my novels dealing mainly in romance one form or another I do like to do on occasion for something different so this fit the bill. Enter the dark side I would say and the road in this one isn't very long but one enjoyed traveling. Boredom is the starting point and what crossed my mind was a saying growing up idle hands devil's playground but in this case it is humans and their greedy little lives. One man's downfall is the beginning of one fallen to take over to do as he pleased but in a big way. This is a excellent build up of what promises to be if this is the intention a good intense series. You are given all the key players and they do play rough. Evil or should I say sin also is rampant and the game is high stakes. Many out of their own darker nature will lose. Of course though evil doesn't always win in this read, towards at the end of it the set back will take place in the battle and the demon doesn't quite win at all. His opponent turns out to be very worthy too. What is written so far very well done. Looking forward to what is written next from this author. Received a arc for a honest review.
Her best yet.
This is her best yet and I've read a few of Lachelle's. I really liked the way this story built where a fallen angel takes over a company. Brian Bigelow

This review is from: When Angels Fall (Paperback)David Thornbrook is a man whose life has fallen apart. He is the CEO of a company that has recently been victim to an embezzlement scheme by two of its employees. The resulting scandal threatens to cost him both his job and his reputation. His parents won’t help him and the media is harassing him. Embarrassed and soon to be broke, he considers taking his life. Enter Margonne, a demon who enjoys tormenting humans. While looking for his next prey, he comes upon David and sees in him an opportunity to create havoc in the human world.
It is important to note that this is a novella, rather than a full novel. But it reads as if the author is considering continuing it into other stories. The main character is the anti-hero who rapes, tortures and murders his way through this dark story. The story is fast paced and entertaining. It’s easy to rally for the people trying to get away from this demon, or rid the world of him. If you’re looking for a quick read, I can recommend this one.

And so the days passed. Rose did not speak to Mr. Grey, though they did see each other when she accompanied her aunt to the opera on Thursday. Those few moments of eye contact had been worth the snide comments that her aunt had taken to make whenever Mr. Grey was seen, or mentioned in conversation. No new note arrived on Friday, which should have been a greater relief than it was. Rose had come to believe that her tormentor could read her mind, and that he would have had a few choice words about her feelings for Mr. Grey. She could not quite convince herself otherwise, despite the lack of note as evidence. On Saturday morning, at breakfast time, the plans for what had become the usual walk in the park were dashed by an apologetic Robinson. "Oh, for Heaven's sake!" exclaimed Aunt Edwards after Robinson gave her an extensive list of household affairs that required her attention. "Can you not take care of this yourself?" "I've managed what I can, madam, but I'm afraid these matters do require your attention." "This will take me all morning. But if there's no choice... Rose, you will find some other way to busy yourself this morning. Try not to get in anyone's way." "I could take you to the park, if you still wish to go." Everyone turned to look at Uncle Edwards, who simply finished his breakfast, apparently unaware of the shock his words have caused. "You? Walk in the park?" Aunt Edwards laughed at the idea. "Of course I would not walk," replied Uncle Edwards, offended by the suggestion. "We would take the horse and carriage, go for a ride." "Oh, you are being ridiculous, my dear. You have not handled a carriage since we left for the city." "Exactly, and high time I got back to it. And it seems to me that, as you'll undoubtedly be busy this morning, the decision belongs to Rose." When both her aunt and uncle turned to her, Rose was reminded of the dinner conversation that preceded their departure for London, these many nights ago. This time, however, the decision came much more swiftly. She had missed her uncle; his company, which had always been easier for her to bear, had been scarce since their arrival in town. Her aunt would be very busy this morning. Besides all that, it was a beautiful day, and it would be a shame to spend it cooped up inside. "I think a carriage ride in the park is a wonderful idea. I would love to." "Excellent! Then the matter is resolved. We leave in half an hour."
As her aunt had no real objections to the scheme, thus ended the discussion.
***"Now that we are alone," said Uncle Edwards as the horse and carriage made its way down the street and to the park, "how are you, Rose?" "I am well, uncle." "I assume that by 'well', you mean your aunt hasn't run you completely ragged yet." Her uncle sighed. "Rose, I wish you would stand up for yourself. The world will not end if you say no to her." "She would be upset with me, uncle. You know how I dislike conflict of any kind." "Conflict is a part of life, my dear. You will never be able to please everyone you meet at all times. Tell me, honestly, do you enjoy life in the city so far? Shopping and walks in the park and dance lessons, every morning? Calling on a different person for tea every afternoon, followed by dinners and evenings at the theater and balls, every night?" "It is somewhat tiring, I must admit." "We both know where this is leading, if your aunt has any say over this: you married to the richest man you can sink your teeth into, so you can keep on this crazy merry-go-round social scene. Is this what you want?" "No," said Rose hesitantly. "But..." "I do not wish for the richest man, but for a good man. One who would care for me. One who, perhaps, would be agreeable to partake in a much less active role in society." Her uncle remained silent as they entered the park, and for a moment longer still. "Would I be wrong in guessing that you already met such a man?" he finally said. Rose quietly shook her head. "At least I hope I have." "That boy who paid a call on you last week. What was his name, Grey?" Rose nodded. Her uncle nodded as well, seemingly lost in thought. Rose could not explain what happened next. It felt like something out of a nightmare. The horse inexplicably took off at neck-breaking speed. Her uncle cried out various interjections to the beast, to no avail. The reins, much too slack to begin with, kept slipping through his hands. The shouts of indignation of the passersby turned to cries of fear and pain, as not everyone could get out of the way in time. Every time the carriage hit something, whether it was a person or a mere bump on the road, Rose was terribly jostled. After a particularly bad hit, she found herself thrown halfway out of the carriage. She watched helplessly as her hat fell to the ground, to be crushed under the carriage wheel. She feared her head would be next. It was at that moment that Uncle Edwards took back the reins and violently pulled the carriage to a stop. It was too much for Rose's precarious position, and she fell. Thankfully, she was saved from a painful landing by a pair of strong hands, who gripped her arm and awkwardly pulled her back in the carriage. "Are you hurt?" There was something familiar about the voice, though she was certain she never heard it before. She looked up at her savior: the man was indeed a complete stranger. "Miss?" the stranger asked again as he tried to catch his breath. Rose realized that she has not answered his question. She shook her head: she was scared but unharmed. "I believe that was enough excitement for today," said Uncle Edwards. "Let's go home." "Would you allow me to accompany you? It appears that your horse is easily startled; you may find yourself in need of assistance again." "We are much obliged to you, sir, but that won't be necessary. We reside nearby, and I'll be keeping a better grip on the reins from now on." "Very well, if you insist, I'll let you be on your way. Good day, sir." Uncle Edwards tilted his hat to the man and awkwardly turned the carriage around.
***"Oh, Goodness. What have you done with yourselves? Where is your hat, Rose?" Aunt Edwards fussed over Rose's disheveled hair and dress as soon as she stepped into the vestibule. Uncle Edwards had left her at the door, declaring that he needed a drink and was headed to the pub. "Something scared the horse, and the carriage went out of control. I am afraid I lost my hat in the incident." It would have been ungenerous of Mrs. Edwards to take pleasure in her husband's failure to control the horse and carriage he insisted on taking out this morning. And yet what else could explain the satisfied smile that graced her face, if only for a moment? "Well, I suppose it could be worse. You are not injured, are you?" "No, my aunt." "Good. You will have to change for today, but with a careful pressing, the dress will be as good as new. We shall go shopping for a new hat, soon. Go to your room; I will have Eliza join you to redo your hair and help you change." Aunt Edwards turned and made her way out of the vestibule, with Rose at her heels. The very next moment, the door opened and Robinson walked in. "Robinson?" Rose had not expected him to be out. "Where have you been?" "The grocer, miss." Rose looked down at the butler's empty hands. Before she could question him, her aunt called out. "Rose, how many times do I have to ask you to stop pestering Robinson? Go on to your room, you have to change and get your hair fixed before we leave for tea." Rose did as her aunt bade, but questions and suspicions swarmed in her head like bees. It appeared most irregular to her for him to return from the grocer empty handed. But on the other hand, Robinson should have no need to lie to her about something so trivial. There might be a simple explanation. Perhaps he had not found what he was looking for. But Aunt Edwards had been present, and she was not one to let such an oversight go by without comment. It was possible that she didn't want to embarrass him in front of Rose, but her aunt was not usually so discreet. She continued to question and suspect and doubt herself and others all through the day. Her feelings were only exacerbated when another note was delivered to her that evening.Would you choose the pleasures of the city over your own life?I believe this morning's event made it clearThat you cannot have bothHer tormentor had scared the horse into running off, then. He could have killed her. He probably would kill her, unless she left London, which she could not do.This confirmation of her worst fears was not as terrible as the possibility that this tormentor was much closer than she had believed, that perhaps he lived under the same roof. This possibility, Rose could neither fully accept nor reject. She slept poorly that night.
