People Versus Words
I've met people I didn't like. I've met people who've used words in ways I didn't like. I've never met a word I didn't like.

New Paramedic Short Story Cover Reveal!

Cover reveal of a new paramedic fiction short story. Very, very soon! Over 5000 words, deep 1st person POV, no pronouns, like my first one, ‘Downgrade’. But this one is from a veterans paramedic’s POV and while still sarcastic is more uplifting. Soon, my pretties, very soon! Queen 2 is also coming along nicely. Have added several thousand words this month. Aiming to have the draft done by New Years and the Ebook published by the end of March 2014. I hope, I hope, I hope!

LOOKING FOR AUTHORS
*LOOKING FOR AUTHORS*
I'm looking for published authors that either live in the Houston area or will be/can be in the Houston area Memorial weekend 2014, May 23-26. The Houston Comicpalooza is that weekend, and I'm part of the committee organizing the literary track and author panels this year. While I'm not authorized to make any promises or agreements, I am tasked with obtaining a list of interested authors.
My boss' last instructions were: Authors have to be published (indie or traditional), preference for panels will be given to authors who have paid Artist Alley booths, to my knowledge there's no 'pay' involved at this time (but last year I was on a panel with Jacqueline Carey!), and the tentative plan is that they want each author to get at least 3 panels this year, but that may be subject to change as we get closer. He wants fewer authors this year, but a higher caliber so that each one can get more exposure time.
It's at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston - special rates at the downtown Hilton across the street (which is Nice!) http://www.comicpalooza.com/
I've already paid for my booth under my pen name Jacqueline Patricks. Last year we had over 15,000 attendees! We expect even more this year! I gained some hardcore fans from this event, several whom chat with me on FB on a weekly basis.
If you're interested or just want more information, email me at jacquelinepatricks@gmail.com. I'll be forwarding a list to my boss who will be contacting authors later to make further arrangements.

One Reason Why it's Tough being Indie, or Why Retail Sucks the Big One
Image from Yahoo News
http://shine.yahoo.com/work-money/wer...
As many of you know, I own and operate a handmade jewelry/art business as well as write and work full-time as a medic. Since I started writing again, my jewelry biz has been on mini-hiatus. But there’s another reason why I started getting frustrated with the business. Any small business has an uphill battle, indie author no less, but THIS is a big problem that discouraged me too. Large corporations have been ripping off indie artists’ ideas for years. Over a year ago, some of my jewelry designs, very unique designs, popped up on a Chinese wholesale site. Most of these sites supply large retail chains. Hell, they didn’t even bother to Photoshop the images a little. I recognized my hand holding an earring for size/color comparison! MY OWN FREAKING HAND!!!!
Foreign counties like China don’t have copyright laws like the US, so they’ll rip ideas right off the net. Then big retail stores will see those ‘new’ designs, love them, stock from the wholesalers, and end up undercutting the prices of the indie artists–with cheaply made, mass-produced products rather than higher quality, handmade art. Thereby destroying that one of a kind art and the income of the artist because most people would ‘rather pay a few bucks for the same thing that’ll probably break in a few months’.
It makes me sick, and it’s a huge reason why I rarely shop retail any more. I prefer to buy unique items from craft fairs. Generally, I only buy retail if it’s something I can’t buy from an indie artist. Of course, my family complains that it makes me hard to buy for because there’s usually nothing I want/need anymore. :o )
Just my PSA rant for the day.

A Sneak Peek of 'He Tells Me'
I’m awake before I realize I’ve been asleep. Darkness more powerful than my eyes surrounds me. I blink . . . I think. It’s difficult to tell where I end and the darkness begins. My head swims and I squint harder. There’s no grayness or fuzzy shapes to anchor my vision, just this solid lack of light pressing me to the bed.
The bed.
I’m lying on a bed, naked. I can feel the rough sheets on the skin of my back. Ugh, the scratchiness of low thread count is as much torture as the ocean of black drowning me.
And I am drowning, slowly, by increments. Each breath pulls more of the thickness into my lungs. Tissues constrict and swell. I can’t breathe! There can’t be oxygen in air, yet my suffering goes on and on and on . . .
Whimpering echoes in the dark, in my head.
Where am I!
I don’t know this place. I need light. I need air. I need—
Clawing at my throat and coughing, I roll to my side. The cover tangles my body and I kick free. Cold air slaps me as I fall over the edge of the bed and land on my hands and knees with a low groan. The floor is hard. It abuses my bare skin. Already I feel tender points where bruises will bloom.
Ignoring the pain, I crawl, scrambling, searching with one hand out for anything—a night stand, a lamp, a chair. My hand bumps a wall. My fingers jam and I hiss in pain, jerking my hand back. Tears sting my eyes. For some reason I resist crying out. It’s important to be silent. I don’t know why. Just like I don’t know where I am.
Or who I am.
Oh God.
Sitting up, I rock back on my hunches and hug myself, shaking.
Who am I?
----------------------
Just a little something I've been working on here and there. Will probably finish it late in 2014 after I have Queen 2 and FA published. This one is a very claustrophobic, 1st person, psychological thriller/mystery ala Hitchcock.

Climbing the Amazon Ranks!
After my Book Gorilla Promo yesterday, I reached #623 overall in all science fiction books on Amazon! That's against heavy hitters like Howey and Heinlein!
Wow! I doubt I'll hang there long, but the fact that I've hit that number is awesome. Plus I'm currently in the paid top 100 sub genres of Metaphysical, Time Travel, and Genetic Engineering. Would be nice to see some further bounce this month from this promo. Maybe and get some extra hang time. :o) Thanks everyone!

My Book Gorilla Promo is live today!
Dreams of the Queen on Amazon 4.4 stars on Amazon
"Strong Sci-Fi themes and a positively original book, Dreams of the Queen is one of the most unique "other world" books I've read."-Pavarti Tyler, bestselling author of transitive fiction
"Dreams of the Queen... this book is very readable, quite well-composed for self-published fiction, and above all else you can lose yourself in the story and travel through the wormhole with Dr. Baros and her team. I think that is one of the largest accomplishments of this book besides being a really fun, highly readable story. I'd like to emphasize that I think the book is in the top echelon of self-published books.... " A.M. Boyt -scifireviewsandgiveaways.com
"The alien culture of the brajj is deftly revealed over time. Plot twists at the end are genuinely startling, and leave the reader anticipating the sequel. -IndieReader Dec 2012
"Devotees of the paranormal genre will appreciate Patricks' original work [...] science fiction and magic meld together perfectly. As readers' imagination is put to the test, it's apparent that only the strong will survive. The dash of romance creeps in slowly, but doesn't overwhelm or interfere with the plot that will keep fans itching for more. -InD'Tale Magazine May 2013
"4/5 - Patricks throws us one curve ball after another while still keeping her characters engaging enough so that we are affected by each loss. She also deftly paints a picture of each main protagonist with all their glory and faults and presents us with a gripping climax." Reader's Favorite June 2013
Aliens, zombies, romance, some time slipping & a wormhole all wrapped up in a mystery!
