Petrea Burchard started as an actor. Then she began to write about it.

Her career began in Chicago at The Second City and Victory Gardens Theaters. She later moved to Los Angeles to work in television, film, and voice-over. Auditions, jobs and the people she met (famous and infamous) became fodder for her popular "Act As If" humor column at NowCasting.com. "Act As If: Stumbling Through Hollywood With Headshot in Hand" is now the book based on that column.

Petrea drew on her experience to write her first novel. During a summer Shakespeare course at Oxford, she fell in love with the English countryside, and the idea for "Camelot & Vine" began to take shape.

Other published works include short stories, including "Portraits," in "Literary Pasa

As in, I must go to the grocery store/check my email/balance the checkbook, etc. before I write. When I just ignore all that stuff and sit at the computer, I don't have any trouble writing.(less)
Petrea Burchard When the story begins to come together, and everything I've put in there has a reason to be there, it's very exciting.

Russo is so good you don't notice it while you're reading. I'll read the climax again and again to learn how to do what he did. Devastating and perfect.

I like Sherman Alexie's work generally--I hadn't read any in a while and won't add it on Goodreads until I read it again, but I remember liking it. My book group read Absolutely True Diary and although I enjoyed it, it's not one of my favorite Alexie ...more

“One thing you who had secure or happy childhoods should understand about those of us who did not. We who control our feelings, who avoid conflicts at all costs, or seem to seek them. Who are hypersensitive, self-critical, compulsive, workaholic, and above all survivors. We are not that way from perversity, and we cannot just relax and let it go. We’ve learned to cope in ways you never had to.”

Hard to put down, an excellent read, a wild, true story. What I love most about Walls' achievement is that she told a harrowing story (one that often made my chin drop in shock) almost without rancor.

“I had no one else to call. Nobody needed me. I had constructed my life to make certain of it. I'd remained aloof in acting class, been too cool to give my phone number to people I met on the set. I hadn't wanted the complications of being nice.”
Petrea Burchard, Camelot & Vine

“It is all true, or it ought to be; and more and better besides.”
Winston S. Churchill

“This is the oath of a Knight of King Arther's Round Table and should be for all of us to take to heart. I will develop my life for the greater good. I will place character above riches, and concern for others above personal wealth, I will never boast, but cherish humility instead, I will speak the truth at all times, and forever keep my word, I will defend those who cannot defend themselves, I will honor and respect women, and refute sexism in all its guises, I will uphold justice by being fair to all, I will be faithful in love and loyal in friendship, I will abhor scandals and gossip-neither partake nor delight in them, I will be generous to the poor and to those who need help, I will forgive when asked, that my own mistakes will be forgiven, I will live my life with courtesy and honor from this day forward.”
King Arthur, Le Morte d'Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
Gore Vidal

“Listen carefully to first criticisms made of your work. Note just what it is about your work that critics don't like - then cultivate it. That's the only part of your work that's individual and worth keeping.”
Jean Cocteau

“Classifiable things reek of death. You must strike out in other spheres . . . quit the ranks. That's the sign of masterpieces and heroes. An original, that's the person to astonish and to rule.”
Jean Cocteau
