"Death of the Zanjero" is a fun yarn set in early Los Angeles, when it was a "cow town" that could only aspire to be an actual town. Propriety is everything (for women) and power is everything (for men). Sounds plausible, and thanks to Bannon's resea ...more

I'm giving this book five stars because I was enthralled from beginning to end without figuring out the mystery until the author revealed it, and it was totally plausible, totally earned. I can't say that about a lot of 583-page mysteries.

A book to love

I love A.J. Fikry and all the characters in this book. I cared about what happened to them. Life with imperfections and humor. An easy read, though not a simple story.

I liked this book a lot. Phoef Sutton knows his way around Los Angeles. He also knows his way around action and characters. I really enjoyed this almost-but-not-quite-light-hearted mystery/thriller. Main character Caleb Rush is a very human tough guy ...more

“I had no one else to call. Nobody needed me. I had constructed my life to make certain of it. I'd remained aloof in acting class, been too cool to give my phone number to people I met on the set. I hadn't wanted the complications of being nice.”
Petrea Burchard, Camelot & Vine

“It is all true, or it ought to be; and more and better besides.”
Winston S. Churchill

“This is the oath of a Knight of King Arther's Round Table and should be for all of us to take to heart. I will develop my life for the greater good. I will place character above riches, and concern for others above personal wealth, I will never boast, but cherish humility instead, I will speak the truth at all times, and forever keep my word, I will defend those who cannot defend themselves, I will honor and respect women, and refute sexism in all its guises, I will uphold justice by being fair to all, I will be faithful in love and loyal in friendship, I will abhor scandals and gossip-neither partake nor delight in them, I will be generous to the poor and to those who need help, I will forgive when asked, that my own mistakes will be forgiven, I will live my life with courtesy and honor from this day forward.”
King Arthur, Le Morte d'Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
Gore Vidal

“Listen carefully to first criticisms made of your work. Note just what it is about your work that critics don't like - then cultivate it. That's the only part of your work that's individual and worth keeping.”
Jean Cocteau

“Classifiable things reek of death. You must strike out in other spheres . . . quit the ranks. That's the sign of masterpieces and heroes. An original, that's the person to astonish and to rule.”
Jean Cocteau
