Dickie calls it “THE operating system for the 21st-century entrepreneur”…
Here’s the operating system:
1. Start sharing ideas
2. Attract like-minded people
3. Figure out their problems
4. Build products that solve their problems
5. Extract proof you’ve solved their problem
6. Document/share your process along the way (which becomes a product)
Dickie dives deeper into each in his Twitter thread
Note how that thread is Dickie practicing step 1 of the OS himself.
So the ideas don’t have to be your own. Just share whatever you think is useful.
$3,141/month browser extensionTony Dinh shares how he recently boosted the monthly revenue of Black Magic – his browser extension for Twitter power users – from $2,164 to $3,141
(He mainly leveraged a big Twitter following to boost his launch on Product Hunt)
Another interesting browser extension is PocketTube, for power users of YouTube.
Looks like it’s built and maintained by a solo developer and monetized via Patreon ($2,486/month).
What other popular websites could use a browser extension for power users?
Related: a free newsletter about Chrome extension ideas
Audience FirstBack to that Twitter extension: creator Tony Dinh credits a lot of his success to building an audience first…
Before the launch. Even before the beta program. Even further than that. I built an audience on Twitter… I had 13.9K followers when I started the beta program 2 months ago… the success of the beta program and the launch are heavily affected by the existing audience I have. That’s what you should do, even if you don’t have any product at the moment: building an audience.
This fits in with the aforementioned framework: you first attract like-minded people (ie. build an audience). That helps you figure out what products or service to create, and makes it easier to market them
If you want to build an audience on Twitter, Trung Phan shares the approach he used to go from 10k to 310k followers in a year: “Smart threads. Dumb memes.”
Get Unstuck 10-Day WorkshopShane Melaugh is the guy who built up Thrive Themes and a few other successful online businesses.
He’s currently doing a free 10-day “Get Unstuck” workshop to help you get 2022 off to a strong start

Shane doesn’t hold back on his free content so give his 10-day workshop a look if you’re struggling to get going this year.
Get Leads From Your Competition of how he started a $100,000/month branding business from his basement
I work with companies worldwide to create new names for their businesses, products, and services. One of the names I created was PODS – Portable On Demand Storage.
With a business like this, I’m always curious to hear how he found his first clients. And unsurprisingly it was the usual networking stuff that worked well for Phillip…
I kept costs to a minimum and focused on referrals, networking, word of mouth, and a limited amount of pay-per-click ads.
But he also did something unusual, contacting his direct competition and asking them for leads…
I found other naming agencies at the time that did larger projects for big corporations. I figured that they must turn down smaller projects all the time. Rather than spend money competing with them, I wrote to them and offered to pay a 10% commission for any smaller leads they sent my way. I got one $20,000 naming project right out of the gate and paid my “competitor” a $2,000 referral fee. It was the proverbial win-win.
Are there big competitors in your industry that you could try this with?

His Microstartups Make $500/DayA chap calling himself Hari Krishna recently posted on Hacker News: My Microstartups make $500/day while I’m sleeping
He lists three websites that made up the bulk of his $117,000 in revenue last year, with only $3000 in expenses.
The three sites:
Visa List – $50,000/year, travel visa infoAnExplorer – $50,000/year file manager appACrypto – $10,000/year crypto price alerts trackerA few commenters call out Hari for self-promoting on HN, but it seems to be working well so you could probably learn from his example.
This comment might also resonate with you…
I’ve had ideas over the years… and the title of this post makes me wonder if my ideas are too big and that’s a reason why they never got to implementation. The concept of a bunch of small/micro things that make hobby level money is interesting.
In other words, instead of trying to launch the next big thing, it may be better to make lots of little bets.
The Day You Became A Better Writer
A short and classic article from the creator of Dilbert. It will teach you “80% of the rules of good writing.”
Naval Ravikant said of it:
Top 100 Companies For Remote JobsThis one blog post right there will change your writing style forever if you put your ego down and absorb it properly.
FlexJobs looked at the 57,000 companies that posted on their remote job board last year and came up with the 100 who hire the most.
The top five, and the areas they typically hire for:
BroadPath – call center, insurance, operations, sales, medical & healthLiveops – medical & health, customer service, sales, insurance, call centerSYKES – customer service, call center, marketing, computer & IT, salesWorking Solutions – customer service, call center, consulting, project management, salesSAP – computer & IT, software development, HR & recruiting, sales, accounting & financeSee the other 95 top companies
My latest monthly finance report is here, detailing everything I earned and spent in my business last month.
$15,013 income$5,198 expensesFinal numbers for 2021:
$208,536 income$57,431 expenses$151,105 profitThat’s a profit margin of 72%, but it doesn’t factor in how much I paid myself.
I tracked 971 work hours for myself throughout the year. Dividing the business profits by those hours results in a $155.62 hourly rate.
Not bad, but it doesn’t take into account untracked hours – I definitely worked more than 19 hours per week – and the previous months and years I spent building up the business.
Still, a good year overall, with revenue and profits increasing about 50% from 2020

YouTuber’s $4.79 Million Income BreakdownAli Abdaal has 2.5 million subscribers on YouTube and recently revealed his earnings from 15 different income streams in 2021.

Some notes:
Ali started working online at age 13, and it was 7 years before his first business success. His first video was posted in 2016, and he made almost nothing his first year on YouTube. He now has 17 full-time staff, 4-5 part-time staff, and a bunch of contractors. The breakdown above doesn’t include some of Ali’s earnings in Nov/Dec 2021.Ali has another video breaking down his expenses for 2021, including more than $500,000 spent on salaries and wages.
From the comments on that video:
Release an NFT drop without codeYour revenue is $4.79M and expenses is around $1.5M. The before tax profit is $3.29M so after UK corporate tax (20%), you made roughly $2.6M in total net profit after-tax. I’m not sure if its accurate but that’s a 55% after-tax net profit margin which is incredible.
Nacho Iacovino put together an in-depth guide
The collection Nacho creates in the tutorial hasn’t done very well, even though he has quite a big audience (43K followers on Twitter), but the guide is all about how to create an NFT drop.

+$500/month side projects
A goldmine of a thread on Hacker News: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
A few that stood out to me…
Magic Lasso Adblock: +$500/month freemium Safari ad blocker appTradytics: $120,000/month “analytics based platform that uses data analysis techniques to generate trade ideas for retail investors”Wandering Labs: “making more a month than the day job”, scrapes campground websites and alerts people of availabilitiesEscape Team: $800/month printable escape roomAlgeo Graphing Calculator app: $500/month, “used to bring in much more but the heydays of apps are over”Forward Email: freemium email forwarding service, “several thousand per month now just one year in”Place Card Me: $1000/month “app for making wedding place cards”SaaS Pegasus: $5000/month “boilerplate for making SaaS apps with Python/Django”The last two are by the same guy. He keeps track of all his projects here, breaking them down into an hourly rate.
Place Card Me has earned him $115 per hour invested. SaaS Pegasus is at $90/hour. Note how his hourly rate is abysmal the first few weeks/months he’s working on a project. Takes a hefty dose of patience and persistence before these things pay off
You know that whole positive visualization thing, where you imagine you already have the life you desire and try tune in to that quantum frequency or whatever
thereby attracting good stuff into your life?
Yeah, that may actually do you more harm than good.
A book called Rethinking Positive Thinking explains why, written by a professor of psychology at New York University.
No need to read the whole book: just watch these two video summaries on YouTube
Both of them break down the WOOP framework, a core concept from the book which works much better than positive thinking alone…
Wish – Figure out what you want.Outcome – Think about how you’d feel if that wish came true. It’s also a great example of link building. At the bottom of the page you’ll see that it’s powered by and links to Reviews.io. They probably got a developer to code up Poet.so in a few days. Then they promoted it successfully on Product Hunt (#1 product of the day).
According to Ahrefs, the page has since picked up backlinks from 200+ domains, including ~20 backlinks from DR70+ sites. That’s some nice link juice flowing through to Reviews.io.
The Copywriter Who Quit Social MediaFreelance copywriter Alexander Lewis writes that he quit social media for all of 2021.
Giving up social media as both a writer and online business owner seemed like a big risk in an already-volatile industry. Could I maintain an online business without the supposedly most powerful networking and promotion tools ever built?
Turns out he could…
My social media break has paid off so well for my personal writing and business that I now consider not using these platforms to be a form of unfair advantage for my writing and business… My business not only stayed afloat in 2021, but also grew by more than 50% despite not having social media for marketing and prospecting purposes.
Alexander acknowledges though that he was already well established as a freelancer when he quit social media, with other channels he could rely on to keep his calendar packed with paid work
My takeaway is that social media can be helpful to launch a business, but once established the costs can quickly outweigh the benefits.
Best way to make money online this weekFollow the process outlined in my free video series here.
That will show you how to pick a skill, rapidly build that skill, and find your first paying clients
You won’t get rich in a week but you should be able to earn $100 or more, and snowball from there.
If there is a key “hack” in that process, it’s to leverage your existing network to find your first clients. I shared a prime example of that on Twitter this morning.

Happy New Year!I’m Hiring A Newsletter AssistantAuthority Hacker New Year Sale$3000/month Automated Affiliate SiteRoadmap to $10k/monthHow to Ask Useful Questions8 (Realistic) Passive Income IdeasLook better on Zoom callsGet Paid To Read Books$1500 for 30 days of nappingHappy New Year! Thanks for being a subscriber to this newsletter in 2021. I hope you’ve found a few nuggets in these emails to boost your online business
Below I’ve compiled the top 7 items from the 51 editions published in 2021, based on what got the most clicks.
But first, two announcements…
I’m Hiring A Newsletter AssistantI’m looking for someone to help with this newsletter.
Once hired, I’d want you to spend a few hours each week scouring the web for tips, insights and resources that will help my 20,000+ subscribers make money online.
To apply, reply to this email with 5 things you think would be a good fit for the newsletter
For each item, tell me WHY it would be of interest to my subscribers.
A couple of examples:
Braintrust: like the Web3 version of Upwork, some impressive success stories on their blog17 Free Courses to Learn Digital Marketing: nice list curated by AhrefsSend me 5 things like that, in the same format.
If you send me something I haven’t seen before and I share it in a future edition of the newsletter, I’ll pay you $20
And if you send me lots of great stuff and blow my mind, I’ll hire you for a longer trial, pay negotiable.
Authority Hacker New Year SaleStarting Sunday, Authority Hacker are running a special offer on their top-rated TASS course.
I’ve reviewed that course in-depth, collected 20 student reviews of it, and learned a ton from the same training myself. (TASS was the main course I followed to get eBiz Facts off the ground, teaching me much of what I know about SEO and affiliate marketing.)
The special offer will get you the discounted price, 2 new blueprints, and an exclusive copywriting bonus which won’t be available at other times.
It will be available from Sunday, January 2nd through the end of Thursday, January 6th (Midnight PST).
Click this link during that window for more details
(Outside that window the link will take you to the usual course info page)
Best of eBiz Weekly 2021Here are the top 7 items from the last 51 editions of this newsletter, based on what got the most clicks…
$3000/month Automated Affiliate SiteCheck out DealsViking.com
It’s a simple site that displays items from Amazon that are currently discounted, and also shares those discounts on Twitter. All the links are affiliate links so if you click through and buy something on Amazon, Deals Viking earns a small commission.
The owner blogged about the project recently, providing some juicy insights:
Started the site in July/AugustBuilt it in 2 weeks for less than $200Fully automated, owner spends 1 hour per week checking on itNow earning $3000/month in profitSomeone already offered to buy it for $40,000That’s the best ROI of any affiliate website I’ve seen to date.
Yesterday I added Deals Viking to my big list of affiliate marketing website examples, along with these four:
Well Kept Wallet – $50,000 per monthVaping Cheap – $7,935 per monthWhichBingo – sold for £2+ millionGear Up Hiking – $1,000+ per monthSource: eBiz Weekly #148
Roadmap to $10k/monthSamuel Thompson lays it out in this thread.
The basic premise is to do digital marketing for local businesses. Charge them a retainer and deliver a steady stream of leads every month.
Samuel gives the example of dessert shops
and describes how to go from $0 to $10k/month in 60 days or less
It will likely take longer if you don’t already have some digital marketing or sales skills, but the process sounds solid. Worst case scenario, you’d learn a ton from trying this.

How to Ask Useful QuestionsThis article by Josh Kaufman is the most important thing you’ll read today.
Especially if you’re struggling with making money online and need to ask for help.
I get emails every day asking things like:
“Hello! [Insert life story.] What should I do?”
“I’m thinking about [action]. What do you think?”
Those are bad questions, and I’ve given up responding to them. (Though now I might start responding with just a link to Josh’s article
)
Josh provides templates and guidelines for asking better questions, based on the 5 different types of information you might be seeking.
Ask better questions, get better answers.

8 (Realistic) Passive Income IdeasNoah Kagan lays out 8 passive income ideas in this 14-minute video.
He earns passive income in all 8 ways himself, amounting to about $40,000 per week
I like what Noah says about active vs passive income:
Significant wealth comes from active income. Conserving and maintaining your wealth comes from passive income. A lot of people are completely delusional. They’re like, “I’m gonna do one thing one time and be rich forever.” It doesn’t work that way.
In other words, it’s pretty much impossible to generate consistent passive income before you’ve figured out how to generate consistent active income.
Gotta crawl before you can walk and all that.

Look better on Zoom callsYou might feel a little envious of Seth Godin’s setup for Zoom calls, as I did.
You’ll need a few hundred dollars to emulate it, but as he says, “it’s time to get serious about how we show up in remote meetings.”

$1500 for 30 days of nappingQuite literally a dream job that Eachnight are hiring for right now.
You basically need to run napping experiments
every day for 30 days and report your findings. They’re only hiring five people but you can apply from anywhere in the world.

A closer look at his Indie Hackers profile reveals that it’s not the first SaaS he’s taken to that level…
ConveyThis – website translation software – $21k MRRGglot – audio and video transcription – $10k MRRLooks like ConveyThis was Alex’s first success. He wrote back in January…
We got our first paying subscriber on May 1th in 2018 and then it took us more than a year to reach the first $1,000 MRR. And now it took us 30 days to go from 10k to 11k which is a new record!
Gglot seems to have been launched in early 2020 and was at $2000 MRR back in January. So in the space of a year the 3 products have gone from a combined $13k MRR to $41k MRR
Slowly at first, then all at once.

$500/Day Dropshipping on FacebookAndrey Kozlov earns +$500 per day (profit) dropshipping on Facebook Marketplace, according to a new interview over at Side Hustle Nation.
He works with a team of 6 virtual assistants to handle hundreds of orders a day, selling products he never has to touch
His numbers for 3 recent months:
August – $66,000 revenue, $16,000 profitSeptember – $70,000 revenue, $16,000 profitOctober – $89,000 revenue, $22,000 profitSo his margin is usually around 25%.

Copy.ai is a popular and highly rated automated writing tool, powered by GPT-3
They recently launched a free plan that gives you 100 credits for the first month, then 10 credits for each following month.
Here’s a 10-minute video showing you a few ways you can use it. It seems to work best for idea generation and overcoming writer’s block
Someone named Easlo has done that this year, creating and selling Notion templates, courses and resources.
Check out his interview on Gumroad
Easlo started with no products, no followers, and no email list. Now he has 27 products, 19k followers, and 2000 subscribers.
Oh, and he’s only 19 years old
It seems the key for Easlo was joining Twitter and becoming active in the Notion community on there, giving away lots of free advice and templates.
It still took him several months to get to $1000/month, so this isn’t exactly an overnight success story. Even with $27k in earnings in 8 months, his “hourly rate” probably works out to less than $15. But revenue is surely flowing easier for him now that he’s over the hump

Karo Wanner breaks down how James masterfully repurposes content on Instagram and drives followers to visit his website, subscribe to his newsletter, and buy his book
I like this approach to Instagram because it’s easy to outsource. And, given that, you could try offering it as a service to content creators who are big on other platforms but have yet to establish a significant presence on Instagram.

The images went viral on TikTok and Instagram last year (one even became a New York Magazine cover shot), capturing his neighbors at the start of quarantine, repurposing their rooftop into a safe gym, office, or art studio.

About our 31-factor editorial review processHow does Dropshipping Titans help you make money?
Paul’s courses aim to teach you how to make money on Amazon and eBay via dropshipping.
Dropshipping is a form of E-commerce where the seller doesn’t need to stock the goods. You make money by providing a store and selling products from a third-party supplier. When a customer purchases something, the store orders the product from the supplier, and the supplier delivers the product to the customer.
