Meanwhile, the guys at Authority Hacker debate the pros and cons of monetizing a website with display ads vs affiliate marketing.
They highlight a couple of sites that depend on display ads and estimate their revenue…
The Recipe Critic… 4.9 million organic traffic per month… $147,000/monthThe Dating Divas… 888,000 organic traffic per month… $35,500/monthPre-selling $3500 in 5 hoursLim How Wei has built up an audience of 5000+ followers on Twitter.
He mainly shares SEO tips on there, from his experience growing followchain.org to more than 2M monthly visitors and $20,000 in monthly revenue, mostly from display ads.
Recently he announced on Twitter that he’s writing a book about SEO, and pointed people to a sparse pre-order page.
5 hours later, he noted that he’d already collected $3,500+ in sales 
Breaking down Lim’s journey:
He got good at SEO and built a successful website…then leveraged that success to build an engaged audience on Twitter…then leveraged that audience to quickly validate an idea for a digital product (his book)The sequence is important there.
Lim couldn’t have successfully presold his book without first building that audience… he couldn’t have built that audience without having valuable insights to share… and he wouldn’t have been able to share such insights without first developing his SEO skills to a high level 
Mohit Tater shares how he built a $1.5 million a year business by flipping and investing in websites.
The most interesting part to me is how Mohit blogged for a year in 2012 and “all I heard were crickets. No traffic, no income, nothing to show” 
Instead of letting that get him down…
I thought to myself, if I can’t grow a business from scratch, I might have a better chance of scaling an already profitable business. So I bought my first business for $2,500 on Flippa… It was a social media marketing agency and in six months of running it, I turned it around and quintupled it, eventually selling it for $12,500 (on Flippa of course)… That’s when I was like, this thing works!
Mohit went on to rinse and repeat that process, to the point where his business now has over $7.5 million in assets under management 
I love that he didn’t take his initial failure as a sign that he was bad at business, but rather sign that he hadn’t found the right type of business for him.
Talent Stacking to $3.4 Million RevenueBack in 2018, Sam Shepler founded Testimonial Hero, a productized service that helps businesses collect video testimonials 
In 2020 the company did more than $1 million in revenue, and they tripled that last year to $3.4 million.
Sam told his story in a recent interview, including how he came up with the idea for Testimonial Hero…
Another concept Sam focused on was a concept coined by Dilbert cartoonist, Scott Adams, called talent stacking. “Basically you think about making a rare and valuable mix of talents by stacking them. I had video production but I also had B2B sales and marketing. I wasn’t in the top one percent at either of those, but combining everything, I thought I could be the best at B2B videography. I could be in the top one percent.”
Sam also reckons more entrepreneurs should start with a service business, rather than something like software as a service (SaaS)…
Journey to a $1 Million ARR SaaSIt’s very trendy to have a bootstrapped SaaS, but on a risk-adjusted basis, most people should start with a services business. You can create a profitable, cash-flowing business very quickly. It’s easier to quickly build up a high-ticket service compared to high-ticket software. Also in software, there is a ton of competition, much of it venture-backed with considerable resources to outcompete you.”
To drive home the point that SaaS is hard, check out the journey of ScrapingBee, a web scraping software built by two French guys.
In their own words…
it took us almost five years and multiple failed projects to grow a sustainable and almost bootstrapped SaaS…
In November [2020], we finally reach $10,000 Monthly Recurring Revenue. A very symbolic milestone for us, because for the first time, it allowed us to get paid (almost) the same as our previous job, and it also meant that we were profitable. But as you can see, this took a while. We started working on ScrapingBee almost 18 months before this moment.
I consider SaaS a Level 5 online business. If you’re new to entrepreneurship, start at a lower level and work your way up 
Nathan Barry founded ConvertKit – yes, another SaaS – which now does $2.4 million in monthly revenue.
Nathan recently broke down how he scaled the business from $1500/month to $100K/month in only a year 
I especially like the email template he shows there for reaching out to customers of competing software (he had previously connected with on social media so he wasn’t emailing them cold)…
Rather than asking for them to buy or demo my product, I’d ask what was frustrating them about MailChimp, Aweber, or whatever they were using…
That lead naturally to a conversation about how I’d solved those same issues. I’d offer a call to a) give them some suggestions to improve things in their current tool & b) show them what I’d built with ConvertKit.
Nathan did 100’s of those calls, following Paul Graham’s famous advice for startups: do things that don’t scale.
Nathan also did a bunch of other tedious tasks to secure early customers, and estimates that his hourly rate was less than $5/hr, “far from the $150/hr I’d been charging for design services.” 
Takeaway: sometimes it has to get worse before it gets better.
$100,000 with 2 Google SheetsSpeaking of doing things that don’t scale…
Flexiple is a kind of match-making service for freelancers and tech companies. They’ve been around for about 5 years and did +$3 million in revenue in 2021.
Co-founder Karthik Sridharan recently shared in an interview…
we got the first $100,000 just by using Google Sheets! We had two sheets, one called ‘Companies’ and other, ‘Freelancers’. We used to talk to them, note down their names and details, and then manually match companies to freelancers, send them emails, make invoices and so on.
From wanting to make a very scalable product, we instead ended up with something very manual… But when these processes began getting too tedious, we decided to use no-code wherever we faced manual bottlenecks.
Apparently their no-code tech stack costs them only $100/month but helped them generate that +$3 million last year

I enjoyed reading Aprilynne’s thread and interview about starting, growing and pivoting her channel. Even though she achieved success on YouTube relatively fast, she has experienced plenty of ups and downs along the way.

When a client lowballs you, just ignore the number. Say, “That’s not going to work. Can you come up with another number?” Let them negotiate against themselves.

Todd Trimakas tells the story of how he built ByteStand, a suite of apps for Shopify.
His first app: a bridge that “moves and maintains your inventory from Amazon to your Shopify or BigCommerce store.”
Todd got the idea for the app when trying to move his own Amazon business to Shopify several years ago…
I thought, “There has to be an automated way to do this.” But I searched and there was no way to automatically and intelligently pull this info from Amazon to the store.
So Todd taught himself to code and built an MVP
Now, a few years later, the business is just him and 2 employees and they’re doing $500,000 a year in revenue with 50% annual growth.
The key takeaway for me here: don’t wait around for a great business idea. Get started on something – anything, really – and you’ll inevitably run into painful problems that are crying out for a solution.
$12k/month part-time design agencyCarsten Pleiser is the founder of Design Buffs, “a productized service to hire pre-vetted designers.”
Clients pay Carsten $849 to $1499 per month for 2-4 hours per day of design services. The work is handled by Carsten’s dedicated team of creatives 
So it’s basically an agency setup – though Carsten prefers not to call it that – which is a Level 3 online business according to my framework.

Side Hustle Nation has a new interview with Georgia, where she reports earning $90,000 on Fiverr in a recent month
Lots of great advice in there for getting started on Fiverr and scaling the business (she now has a team of people helping her out).
Re: getting started, I like Georgia’s advice to ask friends and family to purchase your gig and leave positive reviews. This helps get the ball rolling. You could do the same on Upwork or similar sites.

He did an AMA a few months back when he crossed $100k annual recurring revenue, and this week announced his latest milestone…
I was a mediocre software engineer. I spent 8 years growing my base salary from $100k to $150k. Now, I’m a founder. It took me 4 months to grow my biz from $100k to $150k ARR.
Testimonial.to was not Damon’s first swing. He launched 4 other apps in 2020 alone – after learning web dev from a $10 Udemy course – and earned a combined $1.99 from them.

$30k/Month Podcasting as a ServiceAccording to a recent interview, Ben Krueger started Cashflow Podcasting for about $800 back in 2013, and has since grown it to $30,000 a month in revenue
After graduating college, Ben landed an internship with an entrepreneur who had a podcast, and eventually offered to take over the production duties. That entrepreneur became Ben’s first client, and led to several referrals.
Think about the work you’re currently doing – could be client work, a regular 9-to-5 job, an internship or a remote job.
What recurring tasks or projects do you see in your day-to-day that could be turned into a productized service? 
Gravitec is an easy-to-use push service that boosts your website’s traffic by converting one-time visitors to subscribers.
I didn’t think much of it at first, but it’s racked up 400+ positive reviews, so folks are clearly loving it 
One reviewer wrote:

$1,000/Month Selling Online CoursesPreetam Nath writes how his first online course – Programmatic SEO – earned $15,000 in about 7 months, and how you can do similar.
I like that most of his advice is around building an audience, which IMO is crucial to the success of any course launch
Preetam mainly launched his course to 3,000 followers on Twitter…
Kenneth Cassel had a similar-sized audience when he launched Vim.so. His course went on to make $15,000 in ~2 months.
… but reckons an audience of 1,000 followers/subscribers is enough to launch.
