Kate Riordan is a writer and journalist from England. Her first job was as an editorial assistant at the Guardian newspaper, followed by a stint as deputy editor for the lifestyle section of London bible, Time Out magazine.

After becoming a freelancer, she left London behind and moved to the beautiful Cotswolds in order to write her first novel, 'Birdcage Walk'. Her second novel, a haunting dual narrative story set in the 1930s and 1890s will be published by Penguin in January 2015 as 'The Girl in the Photograph'. In February, HarperCollins will publish the same book as 'Fiercombe Manor' in the US and Canada. She is now at work on her third novel, another dual narrative story full of intrigue and secrets, but this time set in the 1870s and 1

Oh, how I love this book. One of the most famous opening lines in any work of fiction and one of those books that just makes you wish you could go back in time. Set during a long hot summer in Edwardian times, it centres around Leo - for whom nothing ...more

“The real ghosts are the ones that take up residence in your mind,”
Kate Riordan, The Girl in the Photograph

“It is infinitely better to be loved, than to love. Especially in a marriage. After all, to love someone is to be held captive.”
Kate Riordan, Sanditon: Official ITV Tie-In Edition

“Oh, reading! There is something singularly unattractive about a woman reading a book, I always think. Hunched and squinting in a corner while everyone else is being sociable and amusing. And, of course, it ruins the posture and the eyesight.”

J Matheson Hi Kate,

Still working out how this site works, interesting to find that we have a similar taste in books, your list appears to have books of value whereas at the moment I've been reading a load of crime thriller types which don't seem to have much worth on here. Desperately want to read your Birdcage Walk, difficulty being I can't persuade myself about Kindles. I did tell you about the Skirrid Mountain Inn in Wales, the most haunted pub in Wales

Regards John x
