#NewRelease & #Giveaway - Moonlit Sight by @thatbritnihill

Title: Moonlit Sight
Author: Britni Hill
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Cover Designer: MiblArt Cover Design
Publication Date: May 4th, 2021
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR

Blurb:

What’s a girl to do when she loses her job, her best friend goes missing, and she starts to see, hear and feel things that aren’t there?

Moonlight Grove is a small, peaceful town full of familiar faces. It’s perfect. Until my best friend, Lucy Warren, goes missing.

Enter Simon Caldwell.

The man is attractive. A bit mysterious, and a new face in my sleepy little town. He’s a paranormal investigator who’s come to Moonlight Grove looking into reports of the supernatural kind. It all sounds like good TV to me. When I begin experiencing things I can’t explain, he may be the only one who can help.

Maybe there’s more to Lucy than meets the eye. What if her disappearance is linked to all the crazy things happening?

With Simon’s help, I’m determined to find her and to ignore the way he makes me feel while I do it.

Britni Hill is a paranormal and contemporary romance author. She spends her days as a hairstylist, and her nights with the characters in her head striving to write real, page turning romance.

Britni lives in Indiana where she was born and raised. She has a rescue pup she adores and an unhealthy love of binge-watching cheesy, teenage dramas. If she isn’t writing, she’s reading or watching horror flicks.

Small little thumps come from Lucy’s bedroom, and I stop moving. I listen, waiting. It happens again. Two seconds later, a small white fluff of fur appears in the doorway. Startling blue eyes blink at me.

It takes me a minute, but then I realize what I’m looking at. It’s a cat. A kitten really. Small and furry.

Stepping closer, I freeze when another kitten prowls into the open door. Then I do a double take. The second fluff of fur is identical to the first, down to the intelligence brimming behind shining blue eyes.

A funny feel takes hold of me as I stand in the hall staring at them. They both sit, blocking the door.

Okay … synchronized sitting.

That’s cool.

One blinks.

Then the other.

Suddenly, I feel like I’m falling into a dark tunnel. I try to snap out of it, but I can’t bring myself to look away.

I’m stuck. Falling deeper.

“What are you looking at?”

Jumping out of my skin, I press a hand to my chest.

“You scared me,” I hiss.

At least he broke the weird identical kitten hypnosis that was happening.

“Sorry.”

I point toward Lucy’s bedroom.

“Cats.”

“Oh, cute.” Simon steps toward them. As if on cue, their tails swish. Left. Then right. And back to left. He pauses, looking to where I’m frozen in place. “Did you not know she had cats?”

I look to the cats, getting a weird murder-y twin vibe from them. Any second now, they’ll start meowing redrum at me.

“No.” I shake my head. Simon’s brows pull together as he studies the tail-twitching fluffs of fur.

“You really think they’re cute?” I don’t. Not at all. They’re creepy times one hundred, and I can’t put my finger on why exactly. A full-body shudder rolls through me, and I carefully slink forward.

It feels weird to go in Lucy’s bedroom without her here, plus I’m not sure I’d be welcome by the feline security guards, so I bypass it and head to the end of the hall where her office is. The door is shut as usual.

Come to think of it, I’ve never been in this room.

I hesitate with my hand on the knob. Simon steps up behind me, the warmth from his body invading all my space.

“Do you mind?” I lean away from him, huffing. The last thing I need is his muscles and yummy smell clouding my already crazy brain.

“What are you waiting for?”

Dropping my hand, I turn just enough to see him over my shoulder. I’m not sure what I expected to find by coming here. Signs of a struggle? Maybe. A clue to tell me where my friend is? Probably. But now that we’re here in her space without her permission and her two weird cats are staring at me, I kind of want to leave.

“I don’t know. The cats freaked me out. Okay?” I hiss at him.

I push the door open, and something whispers through the air. Another chill rips down my spine, and I stop where I am.

“Did you hear that?” I ask. Simon’s forehead wrinkles, but he shakes his head.

I frown and listen for it again. But nothing happens.

I’m seriously losing it.

With Simon hot on my heels, I make my way into Lucy’s office.

It looks normal in here too. More oils. Lucy’s laptop. Crystals litter the windowsill. I pick up a pretty purple one and take a deep breath, rubbing my fingers over the surface. Something about it soothes me.

Across the room, a bookcase takes up an entire wall.

There’s nothing in here that’s going to put me at ease. Nothing stands out. Nothing holds the answer I’m looking for.

Simon holds a leather-bound book in his hand. “I think your friend is a witch.”

“What? No.” A laugh bubbles up.

“This is a spell book.” He gestures my way with the book in his hand. He grabs something else from the shelf, holding it up. “This is sage.” He gestures to the three mason jars filling the shelf next to him. “That’s moon water.”

“Okay, but that’s not a … real thing.” My lips roll inward. Is it?

“You think ghosts are real but not witches?” he asks.

My hands go to my hips. “I never said I think ghosts are real.”

“You don’t think ghosts are real?” He frowns. “Why did you agree to work with me?”

My mouths opens, but I’m at a loss for what to say. It’s clear he really believes in all this supernatural stuff, but I don’t know what I really think.

Witches?

“This was dumb. I don’t know why I wanted to come here again,” I blurt, overwhelmed by everything happening.

He’s giving me a look. One I’ve seen a lot lately. One that says he’s not quite sure what to think of me.

'Mental illness' are not dirty words - A blog post for Mental Health Awareness Month.

May is mental health awareness month, so i thought i'd write something and open up about my life with mental illness and disability, because we shouldn't be ashamed.

I used to be ashamed though. I used to try everything to hide the fact that i had a disability, to fit in. I never had many friends growing up, especially at school. I got bullied. So i spent my lunch times in the library or in the corner of the playground reading or writing. Books and words were my friends.

I have what used to be known as Aspergers - a type of high functioning autism, but is now put under the same umbrella as all forms of Autism. My therapists, friends and i still call it Aspergers, though. I also have anxiety, which makes it difficult to verbally communicate and get out and about in society.

Which is why being an author is the perfect job! haha. I can sit at home and work, and not 'people'. It's hard when i go to book signings and events, though, because i have to be 'on', and talk to people. At the end of the event i am absolutely exhausted. After my last event,  i was really sick with a respiratory infection for a few weeks. It's emotionally and physically draining.

But that's anxiety for you.

I am also an empath. I can feel people's energies, which is even more exhausting. I can't stand negative energy, or lots of really loud, extroverted energy. I am most at home on my own, with a book, with my fur babies, in the quiet. After a big event, or even after my job at the State Theatre, i need a few days to recover, to switch off after being so 'on'.

Writing is my therapy, my creative outlet. Without it, i wouldn't be here. I had been diagnosed with depression in the past, and am on medication for it, and my anxiety. Yes, you shouldn't be ashamed to say you're on medication. I feel so much lighter now.

I used to worry the pills though would destroy my creativity. Most artistic people would know that in the darkness is where all the best ideas live, where most muses live.

But the good news is, the pills haven't dulled or destroyed my muse. She is still here, working as hard as ever on the next book.

Putting mental illness on paper

I love flawed characters.

When i began writing my books, i subconsciously made my characters have mental struggles, inserting mental illness unintentionally into my books. I don't know why, but i just love flawed characters! And their character arcs are just so much stronger when they're going through a battle with anxiety or depression, or another type of mental illness.

I love the outcasts, the weird ones. Because, growing up, i was the weird one. the outcast.

And those experiences, traumatic as they were, have helped shape the way i write and my characters today and will continue to shape them in the future.

If you wanted to read some of my flawed characters...

You may be thinking, if i was to read one of your books that represented mental health or mental illness, which should i read?

Most of my characters have flaws, i won't lie, but i think the stand out books that deal with mental illness specifically are:

- The Molten Heart saga (Soon to be getting new covers! Watch this space)

- Girl in the Spotlight

- The Adelaide Paige Saga.

- Treacherous

- Truth or Dare (The whole Summervale series really)

These are the ones i recommend.

Girl in the Spotlight especially deals with depression and trauma after my main character Lexi is sexually abused and harassed by her boss at work, and her love interest breaks up with her.

***

My latest release is The Adelaide Paige Saga Complete series boxed set. So you catch up on one of my bestselling series and binge read all of Addy's adventures. You can get your copy here.

They should be simple enough. I mean, everything begins with them, right? A single letter can be a word. A series of words become sentences. A series of sentences become paragraphs: papers, short stories, novellas, novels. Sounds easy, and yet as I sat there staring at a blank page, I couldn’t for the life of me seem to put my thoughts into a cohesive flow.

I was suffering from a severe case of writer’s block, and my muses seemed to be on the longest coffee break ever. This would have been all well and good if I weren’t under a deadline with my publisher. Naomi had been kind enough to give me three extensions but had made it clear there would not be a fourth. I sent her some pages in hopes she’d take pity on me, but instead, she emailed them back to me in a bold, harsh font and told me they lacked my usual passion and fire and to go back to the drawing board.

Nine hours later, I was still staring at a blank screen. Hope of any inspiration knocking me over was as cold as the cup of coffee and a half-eaten chicken sandwich sitting on my desk. Nothing was working—not the junk food or the caffeine. Maybe I should grab some chocolate and alcohol, I thought. Wasn’t it Ernest Hemingway who said, “Write drunk, edit sober”? Hell, what did I have to lose at this point?

#BookBlitz - Empty Threat by #DannyBell

Title: Empty Threat
Author: Danny Bell
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR

Blurb:

Book one of The Black Pages

Elana Black has the power to make herself fictional. But when she decides to start saving all the people in books and TV shows who die just for the sake of advancing the plot, she quickly learns that she's not the only one with her powers.

All Elana wants to do is save people. But these others don't want the stories to change, and they'll do everything they can to stop her.

If you had the power to change fate... to create a happy ending where there wasn't one before... would you do it if it meant risking your own?

My name is Danny Bell. I want to tell stories and avoid writing author profiles. I read--when I should be interacting with people, I named my cat after a cat I liked in a book, I'm pretty sure I saw a ghost one time--though I'll never admit it publicly, I'm too tall for the earth, and I've never eaten a vegetable. I lied about the vegetable part. Wait... is someone going to read this?

“The stairs, come on!” Olivia hissed back, grabbing my arm. We ran as silently as possible. When we got to the stairs, she peaked her head inside, gave a glance up and down, then motioned for me to follow. We made our way up a full floor before we heard movement above us. With no other choice, we ducked into the sixth floor, opening and closing the door as quietly as we could. No one was waiting for us, fortunately. Without waiting an extra second, Olivia dragged me into a small examination room.

“All right. Okay. New floor. That’s something. We just need to figure out what we do now.” Olivia said pensively; I wasn’t sure if she was talking to herself or me.

“Can we stop for a moment?” I demanded. “Where is all of this coming from?”

“Well, I don’t want to die, and one of us had to do something!” she snapped back with a mirthless laugh.

“I was going to figure something out!” I began to protest. I stopped, seeing how Olivia’s expression changed.

“Are you serious? Have you seen yourself?” she asked. “You’re sweating. You’re literally shaking. I had to physically drag you away from danger. Look!”

She spun me around towards the direction of a mirror. I couldn’t believe it; I was a portrait of panic. My left hand was actually shaking and wouldn’t stop. “I’m trying to keep us alive! I am not at all equipped to survive this, but we both can’t be petrified. I’m scared too, but whatever. Unless you’re either going to get it together, or get a new superpower, you just have to trust me.”

I took a few breaths. I couldn’t let us die here, so yeah, it was time to make with my best superheroine impression.

“Right. You’re right. I’m better,” I said with a couple of quick hops to release some of the tension. “You’re right. We got this.”

“That’s fantastic because I have no idea what to do next,” Olivia replied with a sigh.

“You know, my superiors seem to think you deserve a warning,” Bres interrupted over the PA system. “I don’t. I don’t think there’s a damn thing any of us can say to get you to stop really, so why bother? You insist on leaving a bloody mess everywhere you go. Hell, you’ve already figured out the Cruz girl, so you’re not likely to stop, are you?”

“What he’s talking about?” Olivia asked.

“No clue,” I answered. “He’s probably just trying to get under our skin, right?”

“Right.”

“I have a plan, but it’s desperate and stupid.” And largely based on television because I’ve never really been in this situation before.

“I’ll take it,” Olivia replied.

“This is pure speculation, but I think the higher up we go, the more spread out they are. There are multiple ways up to the higher floors, and they’re probably sending people up, but they’re going to be gathered on the ground since that’s the only feasible way out. We’re not getting out the front, but if we can get to the roof we might just be able to, I don’t know, flag someone down or something. Or just lock everyone inside and wait until they leave or maybe they’ll just, I don’t know, burn down the hospital themselves.”

“The stairs are still blocked, how do we make it there in the first place?” Olivia asked.

“This is the dumb part,” I continued. “We send the elevator down to the first floor. There’s like, a thirteen percent chance that they bite. Before you ask how I came up with that number, don’t. This probably isn’t going to work, and I’m going to get us killed.”

“I’m not scared at all,” Olivia said, about as sarcastically as I’ve ever heard her.

I shrugged. “Let’s do it.”

As we left the room, Bres spoke again, and it took everything within me not to yell at him to shut the hell up.

“You know, when people talk about forces bigger than them, they often speak of things outside of their control like shadowy government agents or earthquakes, or God, or any number of other stupid things they could have just planned for.”

I hit the button on the elevator. I could hear the movement in the staircase. It might have been working.

“And while you indeed have been messing with forces much bigger than yourself, something I’d love to make you pay for; I want you to be assured that those are not the forces you need to be worried about.”

We stood still, quietly, until the footsteps faded away. I threw open the door and we dashed up the last flight of stairs to the small ladder leading to the roof. The hatch was even unlocked, our luck was actually picking up.

“The only force you should worry about, the one who decides if you live or not, is me. And Elana, I am so much bigger than you.”

As I pushed the hatch open, a gale force wind sent me hard to the ground, taking Olivia with me and, ironically, knocking the wind out of both of us. I found it oddly funny for half a moment, but as I looked up, the wild-haired silhouette framed by the sunlight pouring in through the hatch removed any humor.

“The smaller they are, the harder they fall, eh?” Bres gloated into a wireless microphone, his voice still echoing from the PA. He floated down to the ground somehow, as if he had always been standing in mid-air, but there was no time to be shocked by this. “Good enough, all. Go home; I’ll handle the rest.”

Olivia was still down, but I tried to get to my feet, my legs shaky; maybe from the shock, maybe from the fall, I don’t know. The instant I was upright, Bres sharply pointed a finger in my direction. Immediately, something I couldn’t see slammed into my stomach, harder than I could ever remember being hit. I didn’t even make a noise as I doubled over; one just wouldn’t come out of me.

“You’ve got to learn, Ms. Black, that your actions have consequences. The world will always demand balance. That’s the job it’s given me.”

As he said that, a sickly red glow began crawling up his fingers, growing brighter, extending further from his skin with each subtle flick of his hand. A sick grin spread over his face as he gestured at Olivia, releasing a fireball towards her.

Even before the flame left his hand, I was on my feet again. I’ll never know where I found the energy to move as fast as I did, or remember what I screamed as I moved, but I somehow threw myself between the fire and Olivia, squeezing my eyes shut in the process. Through my closed eyelids, I saw a bright flash of blue and red competing with each other, followed by brilliant black and then… nothing? No burning, for a moment not even any sound.

I opened my eyes and blinked rapidly as they adjusted to the light again. In front of me stood a bright shimmering half sphere crackling with sparks, like a curved wall of electricity. Around us, the stairwell had been scorched. Bres for his part looked amused. I remembered to breathe, and then the half sphere evaporated.

“Nice,” Bres said flatly. Then, with a casual wave of his hand, he excitedly said, “Let’s see you do it again!”

The people of Nelebek live in fear of persecution from the evil Morlet, who reigns with a dark and destructive magic. The kingdom’s only hope lies with the Order of the Krigers—twelve warriors with mysterious powers linked to magical weapons.

For over a century, Morlet has been annihilating the Order, picking them off one by one. Eleven Krigers have been hunted down, tortured, and imprisoned in his dungeon. Now only one remains.

Sixteen-year-old Kaia survives by keeping her head down and minding her own business. But when she finds herself in the middle of a public execution where the mysterious Morlet is in attendance, an odd compulsion she can’t resist comes over her when she looks into Morlet’s eyes. Soon, an ancient power awakens, and Kaia can’t blend into the scenery anymore. Will she heed the call of the Krigers or will Morlet’s dark magic destroy the last of the Order?

He cocked his head to the side, studying me. As he waved his hand in an arc, a blast of heat hit me. I cried out and fell to my knees—our eyes still locked on one another.

Was the king using his dark magic on me? My arms and legs shook. I couldn’t stand or tear my eyes away from Morlet’s. The word Kriger was spoken in my head, gently, like a whisper of smoke curling around a branch.

Kriger. This time louder, more forceful, almost accusing. My palms tingled. Something swelled in them below the surface. What was happening? A hand clamped down on my arm, and I was finally able to break eye contact with the king.

“Look at me and focus,” a gruff voice whispered. I glanced at the man holding me. “We don’t have much time.” He released my arm. “Can you touch this?” He pulled out a silver necklace from under his shirt. A large, round medallion dangled from it. I hesitated since I had no idea who this man was or why he was helping me. “Unless you want to be arrested, do as I say.”

“Move!” Morlet roared. He descended the platform and started to make his way toward me.

I reached out and touched the warm medallion. The man cursed.

“Where did she go?” the king shouted frantically, unable to see me through the dense crowd.

“Morlet is coming for you.” The man slipped off his large, fur-trimmed jacket and handed it to me. “Put this on.”
