McKelle George is a reader, writer of clumsy rebels, perpetual doodler, and associate librarian at the best library in the world. She mentors with Salt Lake Teen Writes and plays judge for the Poetry Out Loud teen competitions (but has no poetic talent herself). Her debut young adult novel Speak Easy, Speak Love is out from Greenwillow/HarperCollins, and she currently lives in Salt Lake City with an enormous white german shepherd and way, way too many books.

I forking love this book. Superb mystery in a setting that you basically smell on the pages. Speakeasies, drag, a sharp-witted heroine, and a twisty mystery. A++++

I relate to Felicity almost on a too-real level. This book is full of brainy girls and adventure, but also an internal journey of how we see ourselves, and how our expectations and dreams can change as we change.

Also: Monty-and-Percy sandwich.

I loved this even more than the first one. Everything got twistier and darker, the stakes got higher, more real. AND LEGEND. I can't imagine there aren't more books in the series, however. I think Garber is sitting on a secret deal she hasn't ...more

“I'm penniless, alas. If I win, I want a dance. If you win, I'll give you a kiss."
"I don't suppose it occurred to you I might not want your kiss."
"If you don't want it, you can give it back.”

“She let him do it, not only because she came out looking all right in his story, not a clock-throwing ruin of a girl, but also because Benedick's talking about her as if she were already one of them made her one of them. Words. What a tricky, tangled science.”

“What are you rambling about, you nonsensical contradiction?”

“I want to know everything about you, so I tell you everything about myself.”
Amy Hempel

“To be truthful, some writers stop you dead in your tracks by making you see your own work in the most unflattering light. Each of us will meet a different harbinger of personal failure, some innocent genius chosen by us for reasons having to do with what we see as our own inadequacies.
The only remedy to this I have found is to read a writer whose work is entirely different from another, though not necessarily more like your own—a difference that will remind you of how many rooms there are in the house of art.”

“I've been homesick for countries I've never been, and longed to be where I couldn't be.”
John Cheever

Andrea Gibson, The Madness Vase

“I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naïve or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman.”
