Coming up in November, I'll be writing a full novel in a month and posting a chapter daily, as it's written, until the whole manuscript is out. The project is a cyberpunk dystopia, Next of Kin. It follows a future in which the police are no longer trusted by the public, and crimes are investigated by the victim's next of kin.

I'm not really sure where the idea came from- I have far more ideas than I ever end up using, and rarely make the connection about why I got the idea before the draft is finished. Mainly, it's noir-ish and I enjoy writing that style. It also kind of ties in with a short story I wrote years ago, Save As, in the connections between technology, biology, and psychology. So in some ways, even as I outline it, it feels like coming home.(less)

I just set up a book page for the Singularity. I'm hit or miss with that stuff, unfortunately. It makes it up here eventually, but not always in a particularly timely manner.

As to where the idea came from, it all came down to Chris Mereta. I forget where I made the leap to time travel, but I heard stories of football players with traumatic brain injuries, and the way that affected them into retirement, and it just... caught my attention. Disability doesn't get a lot of attention, especially invisible disabilities, but they can have such far-reaching consequences, even without all of the time travel stuff. The Singularity ALL came down to Chris and Morgan's struggles.

Thanks!

Long Time No See

Apologies for the long absence without news. Following Homeless' release, I've been working on my summer's releases, including Nexus' sequel Sins Of The Past, and some extra goodies in other anthologies. In a month or two, I should have excerpts and such to start sharing. It's been jarring, at times, to return to characters I first got to know five years ago, but it's been a fun journey. I'm lo... I picked this series up at my fiance's insistence, as part of my research for a current novel. And without her reading the first 100-120 pages out loud, I never would have kept at it. The opening is SLOW. She says

“So since we’ve clearly created a monster, which of us is Dr. Frankenstein, and who gets to be Igor?” I asked, hoping to inject a little levity.
“I’m definitely the doctor. He had the nicer ass.”
“I hate to be a bubble burster, but you’re a disembodied AI; you don’t have an ass.”
“I have since I met you.”
“Aw. And you do have quite a mainframe on you.” I realized after saying it how weird that was, since technically her mainframe was my mainframe, and I really didn’t want to dwell on how incestuous that was. “But what if I’m not ready to be a father?”
“Well, you’re already a bother, so all you’d really need to do is give an F.”
“That was low, and given how terrible my standards are, you should recognize what kind of an insult that really is.”
“Don’t be a jerk. It’s unbecoming.”
“Well, apparently I’m becoming a jerk. Were you expecting a pumpkin?”
