Brittany Batong has been hearing and telling stories her whole life, most of them based in and around the Los Angeles area. She grew up in the idyllic coastal farm town of Ventura, California, dreaming of becoming a professional character animator. As a child, she spent countless adventures exploring Los Angeles and the greater Southern California region, where most of her extended family was based. She remembers her first experience tasting escargots as a truly religious one. As a teenager she nurtured interests in theatre, poetry, and the arts. “It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful; but it is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look. To affect teh quality of the day--that is the highest of arts.”
Henry David Thoreau
No Man Is an Island by Thomas Merton
“The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them”
Thomas Merton

My friend Michael wrote this book, and he did an amazing job. I was engaged from start to finish, and followed the story, even only having read "A Time Before Me" and not the subsequent "Falling into Me". Each character has a unique and distinct voic ...more

Entrepreneurial visionary Sheryl Sandberg challenges that there is a leader in every one of us, if we could only conquer our fears and allow that aspect of ourselves to surface. She speaks to women in particular, but I think that most people can to s ...more

Brian Selznick once again creates a mystifying yet ultimately believable world through a unique marriage of words and images with his second novel, Wonderstruck. This was a quick read for me, and I was touched by the ultimate message that “Maybe…we a ...more

This was a truly enjoyable read. I am a novice romance novel reader (though I’ve written two), so I gauge this as I would any novel I read (or write). But I know an engaging story, and Nights on Catalina truly kept me invested in the characters and t ...more

“Do you think I am an automaton? — a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! — I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal — as we are!”
Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

Gordon B. Hinckley
“True love is not so much a matter of romance as it is a matter of anxious concern for the well-being of one's companion.”
Gordon B. Hinckley, Stand a Little Taller

Charlotte Brontë
“I would always rather be happy than dignified.”
Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

Charlotte Brontë
“I have for the first time found what I can truly love–I have found you. You are my sympathy–my better self–my good angel–I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my centre and spring of life, wrap my existence about you–and, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one.”
Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

Charlotte Brontë
“If all the world hated you and believed you wicked, while your own conscience approved of you and absolved you from guilt, you would not be without friends.”
Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre
