S. R. Piccoli (the initials stand for Samuel Robert), aka Rob, was born the 13th November, 1950 on the Island of Maddalena—one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean—off the northeast coast of Sardinia. But his origins are nuanced. His mother—an American citizen, although her family was originally from Liguria in northwest Italy—was born in Philadelphia, PA, and his father was born near Treviso, in the northeast of Italy.

When he was very young his family moved to Rome, where he first went to school. After attending Classical High School, he studied political science for two years at the University of Rome. He then moved to Treviso, where he eventually settled.

From 1972 to 1975 Rob attended the Ca' Foscari University of Venice,

Farewell, Sir Roger Scruton

Sir Roger Scruton died last Sunday after a six-month battle with cancer. His death is a terrible, grievous loss and a huge blow to the cultural life of the Western world. His intellectual and spiritual legacy ranges far beyond the limits of political philosophy to include both the elevated realms of religion, aesthetics, and history of art and architecture and the more concrete concerns of so... “Sometimes you are tempted to lose patience with someone and to not waste words on people who—according to you, in a given situation and at a particular time—deserve your silence. Well, that’s exactly when you’d better remember that everyone has a story, everyone has gone through something that has changed them, and often not for the better. That’s when you show who you really are and what life has taught you so far. 'Qui si parrà la tua nobilitate'
('Here thy nobility shall be manifest!' " Dante’s Inferno, Canto 2).”

“Unending Love

I seem to have loved you in numberless forms, numberless times...
In life after life, in age after age, forever.
My spellbound heart has made and remade the necklace of songs,
That you take as a gift, wear round your neck in your many forms,
In life after life, in age after age, forever.

Whenever I hear old chronicles of love, it's age old pain,
It's ancient tale of being apart or together.
As I stare on and on into the past, in the end you emerge,
Clad in the light of a pole-star, piercing the darkness of time.
You become an image of what is remembered forever.

You and I have floated here on the stream that brings from the fount.
At the heart of time, love of one for another.
We have played along side millions of lovers,
Shared in the same shy sweetness of meeting,
the distressful tears of farewell,
Old love but in shapes that renew and renew forever.

Today it is heaped at your feet, it has found its end in you
The love of all man's days both past and forever:
Universal joy, universal sorrow, universal life.
The memories of all loves merging with this one love of ours -
And the songs of every poet past and forever.”
Rabindranath Tagore, Selected Poems

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
