The Tall Man and Neighbors
I have a friend who has taught her little girl that "the tall man" never stands alone. Just the other day, this little girl, stood all of her fingers straight up from her hand and said, "Heaver?" (which is toddler-speak for Heather), "The tall man never stands alone."
This monkey let his tall man stand alone. SOURCE
I didn't ask my friend why she had to teach this lesson to her pre-schooler, I just chuckled and assured the tiny tike that the tall man, indeed, never stands alone. And for a...

Fleetwood Mac, Misti and Checking Out
Recently, my chick Misti and I had the privilege of speaking to a state-wide group of over one hundred moms. We were billed as--get this--the entertainment. We did not disappoint. Misti spoke very eloquently from her notes about Listen To Your Mother (you're coming, right?). I rambled in a nonsensical manner about peeing in the shower and painting with poop. But, ya know what? This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.
But, before we entertained the moms, Misti and I were treated to a lovely...

My Life As Shaved Turkey Breast
When I eat a sandwich, I eat the crust area and outter edges first. I'm a lazy sandwich maker, I don't spread the mayo to the edges and I just squirt the mustard in a circle. Sometimes in a smiley face if I'm feeling particularly saucy. So, I eat the edges first because they are the less. They are the least good part of a sandwich. And, my method pays off when I pop that last bite in my mouth. The last bite that has the mound of turkey and mayo and smeared mustard, lettuce and onion and...

Feeling Old
The text read:
The Breakfast Club had their detention thirty years ago today.
I had a crush on Anthony Michael Hall. I have always loved the underdog.
No friggin' way. I remember my mom taking me to see that movie at the theater when I a freshman in high school. She took me on a Tuesday night when there probably wouldn't be any classmates who would see me with my mother at the movies. We watched unwatched.
I watch the movie every chance I get. I have a running argument with my high school BFF, S...

Of Being "Stress Paralyzed" and "Enough"
A few weeks ago, I got to preview a fun movie called "Mom's Night Out," which is produced by Affirm Films/Sony pictures. My friend Dawn and I went down for a quick bite at Chipotle, where I embarrassingly scarfed down a chicken salad in under ten minutes. This will be an important factoid later on in this post.
The movie was fabulous. If it comes to B'ville, my girl Rachel and I are totally planning a Mom's Night Out with our friends to see it.
The movie kinda seemed like maybe I had written it...

"It's been one week ..."
(Are you singing Bare Naked Ladies now? Catchy little tune, isn't it?)
Last week at this time, my sister called me and said our mom had a stroke. My sister had heard it on the emergency scanner as our 75-year-old momma had called the ambulance herself. She couldn't get her thumb coordinated enough to call my sister or me, so she called 9-1-1. Good momma.
We have quite a history of strokes in our family. My daddy had his first heart-attack when I was just 7 years old. I know that a heart-attack...

#sponsored: Alpha-Bits & Little Free Library
A few years ago, our family watched a news program that highlighted free, sharing libraries. Now, we understand that all libraries are free--that's part of why we love them so much--but these libraries were located in yards, parks, courtyards, public places and were exchanges. When a family finished with one book, they could take that book to a free, sharing library and exchange it for one another family had left. It was/is an incredibly cool concept. We immediately wanted to do one.
But, we're...

#Sponsored: Bourbon & Boots--Bringing Y'all Back
I grew up in Oklahoma in the eighties. Izods with turned-up collars were the thing. We tried really hard to not say "y'all" when we could be saying, "Ohmygosh, you guys!" When we graduated from high school, our goal was to leave Oklahoma and never look back.
I, however, did not leave. I stuck around. I got my degree, and I taught in my home state. And you know what? Oklahoma is not half bad. It's not half bad at all.
I now embrace my inner y'all and take great pride in being a southern g...

Numb3r5
I loved the show Numb3rs. I'm not a math person, but the show was a lot of fun. I also remarked, every single week, how clever someone was to put a numeral 3 in place of the E.
About a year or so into our fascination with the show, I wondered why they didn't use the numeral 5 in place of the S.
"If I ever write a book about math," I stated to Brian one Friday night as we snuggled on the couch watching Numb3rs, "I'll use a 5 for the letter S."
"Well," he laughed, I'm sure wondering who in the wo...

Kiss and Tell: Emphasis on the Tell
What if your lip gloss told the truth. Would you want it to?
Loaded questions. Loaded questions indeed.
The lip gloss I'm wearing today would tell me that I really need more than lip gloss in order to make myself presentable. It would tell me to not eat this Valentine's Day fudge. It would tell me to take the time to flat iron my hair--it's worth it. It would tell me that I'm doing alright as a momma and to not be so hard on myself (or my family) because perfection is unattainable.
