Sponsored: I Gave My 10-Year-Old A Phone

One month ago, AT&T sent us a Go-Phone and provided us with a month's worth of service for this phone. In our family of four, Brian and I have our phones and love them. Daughter 1 has my hand-me-down phone and is very satisfied with her hand-held connection to her friends. So ... that left poor ol' Daughter 2 with a phone that just made calls; we called it the "house" phone. Gasp! I bet you didn't even know that they still existed.

When she saw the unclaimed phone, she was quick to let us...

An Open Letter to Lorne Michaels

Dear Mr. Michaels:

I have a great idea for an SNL sketch. First, let me give you some background. I played softball, but I don't remember much of it, which might be why my yellow-ball career ended in the seventh grade.

But, I have coached my fair share of softball. I'm not talking about "from the camp chair behind home plate" coaching (but I am good at that). I'm talking about on-the-field-giving-good-instruction coaching. And, if my D2's t-ball record is to be believed, I'm a pretty decent coa...

Let It Go ... Not The Song

"I don't like talking to people," D1 said as we got into the car to make our way to the STATE university for her week-long Summer Science Academy.
"I know," I nodded. "Neither do I most of the time, but I do it anyway."
We had this conversation a dozen times on our way there.

And just before I left her for the week, we had that conversation again.
And she hugged me like she used to hug me before she got all cool and teenagery and stuff.
And I came this ->

But I didn't.
I s...

Obligatory Father's Day Post

Guess where I am. Softball fields.
(Sorry if you were really trying to guess and I just stole your thunder.)
Daughter 2's team is playing in the winners bracket at the Weird Weather Tournament. I'm sure that's not the official name, but since the wind blew at eighty miles an hour from the northeastsouthwesterly-north and today we're wearing jackets and dodging raindrops, it's an appropriate name.
My kid is playing competitive ball by no accident. She has a very outgoing daddy who wan...

Saturday the 14

Daughter 1, like every other tween and teen with a heart and blossoming bosoms, has been excitedly waiting for The Fault in our Stars to come to a theater near her.
She and a friend worked for days--literally--to establish a day and a time they could go together. They finally decided Friday the thirteenth at 7:15 would be the best time.
"You're going with us, right, Momma?"
Well, why not.
I read the book in two days, forsaking laundry and cooking. I thought of ten thousand reaso...

Summer 14 MUST READS!

I am fortunate enough to not only get to live my dream of writing cool books. (BTW, have you read my new book, Crazy On Board? You should!)

But, this post is not about me and my cool books. (Again, read them!) This post is about my cool writer friends and their cool books!

First off, my friend Jennifer McMurrain, writes all the time. All. The. Time. So, if you're ever sitting at home wondering what you should read next, check out her Amazon author page because she'll have something new ready fo...

Come see us!

Alpha-Bits, through their generosity and for their love of literacy, has graciously provided a Little Free Library for my community, and I provided it with a home.

Our home, in fact. In our front yard is Bartlesville's newest (and only!) Little Free Library.

Alpha-Bits also provided us with a healthy start of books for the community children to devour this summer (and always!), but The Daughters also took great delight in going through our bookshelves and donating books for all ages, infant thr...

Lessons from Shady Pines #814

"Help!" Helen would holler from her room every single time I passed by whether I was coming or going.

The plea for help is not uncommon at Shady Pines. The residents get help when they need it, but often times, the residents cry for help when they don't know what else to cry for. Unfortunately, we've had to caution The Daughters to resist the urge to help. They cannot physically help a resident to a chair or bed or from a table or chair.

So, to make things easier, we have told The Daughters tha...

"If you have any questions ... "

Daughter 2 likes to be involved. She likes to be involved in everything. A few years back, I mentioned a funeral that I should attend. D2 heard me and piped right up, "I'll go!" Involved. She likes to be very, very involved.

Her desire for involvement shone great last November when a local judge presented an anti-bullying program at D2's school. The judge presents this program at every one of our schools in his district. He defines bullying, harassment, assault and battery. He discusses the le...

Vino Van Gogh--It's always a good time

My friend Dawn and I work hard. I'm not just saying that because middle school is hard work; I'm saying that because not only do we teach, but we are mommas, wives, AND we work extra jobs. Dawn has several pizza restaurants and I write like I have something to say.

When Vino Van Gogh contacted me and invited me and a friend to come paint for the night, I didn't hesitate in saying  Heck Yeah! And I immediately knew I'd take Dawn.

Dawn and I have collaborated on artistic endeavors before.

The...
