henryholt:

At last night’s One Story Ball, Holt author Scott Cheshire introduced Colum McCann, who received an award for mentoring. Scott shared the best piece of advice his mentor, McCann, gave him: “Don’t be a d*ck.” Wise words to live by, certainly.

quinnidae:

Illustration of the feeding mechanism of the sea gooseberry. When relaxed its tentacles expand, acting like a spider’s web to capture prey. Instead of stinging cells, these tentacles are lined with special adhesive cells to prevent prey from escaping.

They had these little guys at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for a while, and I was absolutely fascinated by how much their tentacles can stretch. Really cool!

There is nothing more substantial to place against the cruelty of the world than language.

I love this man: Colum McCann by the Book

fuckyeahpaganism:

Hag stones, also known as Holey Stones or Witch Stones are stones that have a naturally occurring hole and are usually found near oceans and other bodies of water. They are said to be powerful protection talismans, and when worn or carried they protect the bearer from curses, hexes, negative spirits, and harm. They have also been used to prevent nightmares, being strung on a bedpost or placed underneath pillows. It is also believed that if you peer through the hole of the stone that you can see the Fae Folk and otherworldly entities. If one broke, it is thought to have used its power to protect a life.

sagansense:

MIT and Boeing have just introduced Supernumerary Robotic Limbs (SRLs) to the world.

From the publication via IEEE Spectrum:

Supernumerary Robotic Limbs (SRLs) are robotic limbs that, when worn, give you more limbs than you’d normally have. In other words, they’re not robotic limbs designed to replace biological limbs that you might be missing, but rather robotic limbs designed to augment the number of limbs that you have already.

Read it all HERE and HERE.

It seems to me that you should be lifting the box with your insectoid robot arms and not the other way around…

theparisreview:

My mother works so hard
And for bread she needs some lard.
She bakes the bread. And makes the bed.
And when she’s threw
She feels she’s dayd.

Two poems David Foster Wallace wrote during elementary school.

“We walk along the forest on the side of the road. Onishchenko stops. “Give me your word, as one of the brothers, that you won’t tell anybody,” he says.

“My word as a brother.”

“Swear on your tooth.”

I touch my front tooth with my fingernail.”

- Brest Fortress by Vladimir Kozlov, translated from the Russian by Andrea Gregovich - Guernica / A Magazine of Art & Politics (via guernicamag)
