Puebla City, México, November 2013
Like it is a tradition, each 1rst and 2nd of November it is celebrated the traditional Día de Muertos (Day of Dead), celebration that has its roots in the pre-hispanic culture.
Nowadays the celebration of the Day of Dead coincides with Catholic celebrations such as Día de los Fieles Difuntos (All Souls Day) and Todos los Santos (All Saints) which has change the way that people celebrated this festivity.
In Puebla, people take to the street dressed as resurrected skull of different characters of traditional Mexican culture, also people take advantage of this traditional celebration to show their devotion to their different beliefs as can be El culto a la santa muerte (the cult to Saint Death). Cementeries are also frequented by relatives and friends of the deceased who bring cempasúchil flowers which is a mandatory element in the traditional ofrenda (traditional altar for the dead).

Wish I would’ve gotten to this sooner since it’s late to be posting, but I really love this particular message and the discussion around “being a man” and how it relates to the treatment of women as well as gay men (or anyone else perceived as “less” / equivocated with being undesirably weak)

Several years ago, I bought an apartment in Manhattan with an inheritance passed to me from my grandmother, who was the daughter of a former attorney for Standard Oil. She outlived three husbands and managed her money well, and in one moment hoisted me out of one social class and into another.
Meanwhile, barely a mile away, my younger brother was living in a homeless shelter. It was the second or third shelter he’d been in after moving to the city.

This is my new comic “Glancing” debuting at CAB this year. It’s a 56pg, full color, silent comic made with 5x7” watercolors. It’s about three kids going night swimming in a lake and looking at one another in the water through the dark.
I’m offering a Limited Preorder of this book over at my Storenvy. Get it for 2 dollars off. Reblog and get a free gift with your order (if you remind me).

The environmental impact of oysters, in one photo
The water in both tanks came from the same source. The one on the right has bivalves. Not only do oysters naturally filter the waters in which they live, they can even protect humans from destructive hurricanes. For more, read about New York’s efforts to bring back oyster populations in the once-toxic Hudson River.
Delicious AND helpful. Who knew?

Seriously, Evolution, What Were You Thinking? The World’s Most Hacked-Together Species.
I don’t remember now how I first came across the lizard video. Maybe it popped up somewhere in the endless stream of journal articles that, as a freelance science writer, I scroll through on a weekly basis. Maybe someone tweeted it. It doesn’t matter. I remember how I felt. In…
