Alex Gilvarry on Full Stop.

I’m healing the stress and the reflux with yoga and Prilosec. Instead of coffee, I keep a bottle of Mylanta on my desk. These are the writer’s tools.

While everyone is watching the red carpet Oscar crap, I’m taking part in an equally glamorous NYT bestselling author tradition: sitting in the shower reading parts of my book aloud so that I don’t trip over my words at tomorrow night’s reading in Philly (at the Barnes & Noble at 18th & Walnut)….

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I will absolutely be reading Jason Mulgrew’s new book, 236 Pounds of Class Vice President: A Memoir of Teenage Insecurity, Obesity, and Virginity. I would read it based on the title and the excellent reviews alone, but I am also excited to read it because Jason’s wife so very kindly helped to spread the word about my last book when it was published. (And CONGRATS on the newest member of your family, you two! [The baby, not the book.] [OK, the book too.])

Tumblr is, I’m finding, a very supportive community for authors—so thank you all so much for helping to pass along book recommendations (many of which I have taken and enjoyed!).

Also, if you’re in Philly—you should go to this!

spacewatching:

On April 23, 1972, Apollo 16 astronauts Charlie Duke and John Young embarked on the third and final EVA of the mission, exploring the Descartes Highlands via Lunar Roving Vehicle. During the EVA, before setting up a Solar Wind Collector, Duke placed a small family photo he had brought along onto the lunar surface and snapped a few photos of it with his Hasselblad film camera.

“This is one of the photos. The portrait shows Charlie, his wife Dorothy, and their two sons Charles and Thomas. It looks like they are sitting on a bench in the summertime. The family photo, gingerly wrapped in clear plastic and slightly crumpled from being stashed in the pocket of a space suit, was left on the Moon. It presumably still sits there today, just inches away from Charlie’s boot print — which, presumably, is also there.
