Leave it to Psmith by P.G. Wodehouse, read by Tim Miles

P.G. Wodehouse’s Leave it to Psmith is published in the US by W.W.Norton and Co. and can be found at most booksellers.

Many thanks to my old friend Tim who is mastering the art of balancing a camera and a book at the same time.

Roy Scranton, an editor of the Iraq and Afghanistan war...

Roy Scranton, an editor of the Iraq and Afghanistan war anthology, Fire and Forget writes about narrative and war for the WSJ:

To sympathize with the enemy, and the enemy’s child, to let ourselves inhabit states of being and ways of feeling, like the rage of Achilles, that would destroy us in our daily lives, to understand how we tell stories about events, and how those stories make us who we are, and to think through the problem of what it means to be human, thrown into a world beyond our control, we need more than history. We need more than what happened. We need the density, complexity, and imaginative sympathy that well-wrought fiction offers.

Frans de Waal’s Bottom-Up Morality: We’re Not Good Because Of God

by BARBARA J. KING

“In a book coming out next week called The Bonobo and the Atheist, primatologist Frans de Waal argues that morality is built into our species. Rather than coming to us top-down from God, or any other external source, morality for de Waal springs bottom-up from our emotions and our day-to-day social interactions, which themselves evolved from foundations in animal societies.

(Source: NPR)

I heard Frans De Waal speak at Hunter College a few years ago with my friend Kaitlyn who was researching her novel.  He was presenting his findings on the emergence of empathy and co-operation in higher order animals and making the argument that altruism has been selected in to our population.
