“What is it to be human?” from the POETRY app from the Poetry Foundation. Please vote for us to win a Webby Award

Read the rest of the poem here.

When I first saw this, I thought it was a poem by our Fiction Editor, Wilda Waldo! You can find her on Tumblr at willywaldo.tumblr.com.

Full Poem:

What is staying alive? To possess
A great hall inside of a cell.
What is it to know? The same root
Underneath the branches.

What is it to believe? Being a carer
Until relief takes over.
And to forgive? On fours through thorns
To keep company to an old enemy.

What is it to sing? To receive breath
From the genius of creation.
What’s work but humming a song
From wood and wheat.

What are state affairs? A craft
That’s still only crawling?
And armaments? Thrust a knife
In a baby’s fist.

Being a nation? What can it be? A gift
In the swell of the heart.
And to love a country? Keeping house
In a cloud of witnesses.

What’s the world to the all powerful?
A circle spinning.
And to the children of the earth?
A cradle rocking.

What’s your first impression of the DPLA?

Although the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) launched event in Boston was cancelled, the debut of its online portal today at noon ET went ahead as planned.

We’re looking to hear from librarians and users out there about their first impressions—how does the DPLA portal unveiled today strike you?

We’d love to get your take to incorporate into our coverage of the portal launch.

Either let us know in the comments what you think of the DPLA portal, or feel free to email LJ’s Technology Editor, Matt Enis, at menis@mediasourceinc.com.

housingworksbookstore:

Colors Insulting to Nature by Cintra Wilson, terrible chick-lit cover torn off by the author.

This is obviously in our glass case right now in the store. Pick it up for $30!

Must Watch: Dawkins, Nye, Tyson, and Stephenson Discuss Science and Storytelling

Must Watch: Dawkins, Nye, Tyson, and Stephenson Discuss Science and Storytelling:

science-junkie:

Highlights include:

Ira Flatow greeting Neil deGrasse Tyson with a fist bump.
    Richard Dawkins being Richard Dawkins
    Bill Nye being Bill Nye
    Starry Night
The importance of educating women in science
Neil deGrasse Tyson flipping out at Lawrence Krauss and Brian Greene about the motivations behind big-budget science
Tyson and Krauss bickering about pretty much anything (there’s a lot the two don’t see eye to eye on)
When you should and shouldn’t respect other people’s opinion
The role of science-/speculative fiction in communicating and understanding science (Dawkins, for one, claims he came to understand information theory through SF. Bill Nye thinks contemporary scifi cifi could stand to return to its days of intense optimism, as characterized by Star Trek.)
    And much, much more

!!!!!!!!!!!
