Also known as Julie Tetel and Julia Joyce

Julie Tetel Andresen has always loved history, travel and foreign languages. She has lived for extended periods in Germany, France, Romania and Vietnam. When she is not out of the country, she can be found in Durham, North Carolina or Orlando, Florida, as well as New York City.

She grew up with a passion for playing the piano. As an adult she transferred that passion into writing romance novels and scholarly books about language. She likens writing essays in foreign languages to playing scales and arpeggios as warm-up exercises for writing in English. She also practices yoga on a regular basis and thinks of learning new grammatical forms as trying new mental asanas: can she get her leg behind her head

Snickers and Pringles

In the past two years I’ve taken two different trips around the world with around-the-world tickets good for a year that allow you to fly in one direction (either east-west or west-east) and make as many stops as you like. Here is what I have discovered in the many airports, hotels, museums, tourist attractions, and streets I’ve seen the world over. First, people really love their phones and table Read more of this blog post »

“I remember when I first began writing, I would spend maybe five or six hours on perhaps two paragraphs, and at the end of the day, not only were the paragraphs pretty terrible but I was also exhausted by the effort. I clearly wasn't in shape. You don't just tie on a pair of running shoes and go out and run a marathon. You have to be in running shape, just like you have to be in writing shape.”
Julie Tetel Andresen

“If you have a notion of a woman in a bubble bath and reading a romance. I invite you to let it go.”
Julie Tetel Andresen

“No identity is fully chosen by the individual, just as no identity is fully determined by forces external to the individual. This endless interplay between constraint and choice means that identities are necessarily dynamic, emergent, and contextual rather than static, predetermined, and immutable.”

“A good part of the physical attraction [between the hero and heroine of a romance novel] comes to life during these exchanges as well, since language creates a meeting of the minds. I have long thought that these lines of dialogue carve out the lines of the central love relationship. The dialogue between the hero and heroine creates the central shape of the story. It is the verbal sculpture.”
