Interview I had about ‘A Brain Tumour’s Travel Tale’
October is nearly over and November is on its way, but these cold nights are perfect for lounging at home or keeping warm in a coffee shop… so, why not curl up with a good book or even have some friends over and do a book club. A great book to read is self-published Claire Bullimore’s auto-biography A Brain Tumour’s Travel Tale.Claire was diagnosed in 2008 at the age of 25 with an Intraventricular Meningioma or better known as a Brain Tumour.
Her long struggle to get her life back on track has given her a chance to help others by publishing her journey in a diary-like format. It is a chance to tell people what a brain tumour sufferer/survivor may be going through.
Welcome Claire:
What went through your mind when you first published your book?
yeeees! I did it……I wanted to share my story with others about what a brain tumour survivor wants you to know and give people hope that are going through a life changing experience.
How do you write? Do you sketch a plot first, create characters first and then starting to write?
I had an ongoing note pad and whenever something happened I would take a note and then go back later to fill in the gaps.
Where did you get the idea for A Brain Tumour’s Travel Tale? How was the book born?
I set up a support network called ‘Aunty M Brain Tumours’, using social media. I was able to see how people were affected by their own personal journey. I could see people had one thing in common which was finding a way to explain to friends and family how they really feel. I already had a diary so I used the content to share my journey so people could see what others may be going through.
How long did it take you to write this book?
It took me 4yrs to write and a further 5months to self publish it.
When do you write best: in the morning, afternoon, or at night?
I squeezed my writing in when I could. I suffer from insomnia due to my medication. I would use the time in the middle of the night while it was quite.
I can’t imagine getting no sleep! Where is your favourite place to write?
I always sit in my bedroom writing on the desk when it is cold outside but in the summer I sit in the garden under an umbrella. I always have my music on at the same time.
That sounds like a lovely place to live and write. But do you use a typewriter, computer/laptop, or pen & paper?
I prefer to use my laptop so I can write anywhere. I love to travel so everywhere I went I could take my laptop and write.
What do you drink or eat while you write?
I am always not far from a kettle to make a cuppa tea or a hazelnut coffee. I never eat while I write as I always forget about food. Until I realise I am feeling a bit faint lol
I imagine you would need coffee if you are writing before the sun even comes up! Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what kind?
I always listen to Heart 106.2 FM or watch music channels on TV. I can’t write without music on quietly in the background.
What do you wear when you write at home?
All kinds of outfits. However most nights I have my tracksuit bums on.
What is the first book you remember reading?
I read James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. I loved his books as a child.
What book is on your nightstand right now?
Joyce Meyer ‘How to succeed in being yourself’. She is one of my favourite authors.
What is the best advice someone could give a writer?
Don’t take criticism to heart. Look at all feedback as a way of making your manuscript as good as it can be.
What is one random thing most people don’t know about you?
I played Mary in the nativity play in primary school when I was 6 and I dropped baby Jesus. There was a great gasp and then laughter lol
