Review: Blood Memory Beneath The Surface

BM Beneath The Surface

Blood Memory Beneath The Surface by Rosalind Hartmann

5 out of 5 Licks

The night began with such promise.

Following Vivienne Sena and Simon Huntington’s return from the deep cold tundra of Siberia, the Greater Pack and vampire clans celebrate the coming of the New Year.

Things have changed for Simon and Vivienne, now platonic friends, despite Simon’s wishful thinking. Together they embark on another adventure involving one Kyle Evans, human.

The Hammerthynn and Jameson packs are rocked to the core with death and destruction as an unseen adversary lays siege on the families.

Revelations, explosions, a new year, and more questions than answers – Book 2: Beneath the Surface starts with both feet running and ends with a truly, unbelievable and disastrous celebration.

As many of you may know from my review of book one of this series that I wasn’t a happy camper at the beginning but my feelings changed and I ended up enjoying the rest of the book. As I previously stated book one was like an episode of 24 well, my friends book two is way, way, way better than any episode of 24 and more like an installment of Underworld (best reference to what I think is one of the best paranormal action movies around that could have expressed the awesomeness of this book was) therefore being colossally more epic and I loved every minute of  it from page one to the very end. No more confusion between flashbacks and real time. No more frustration or suicidal tendencies for my precious Nook. Hallelujah!!!

Anywho, so much happens in these chapters with this amazing set of characters that I was so engrossed in the book that I couldn’t put it down. The story this time around was fast-paced, well written, driven by realistic emotions and packed full with unexpected twists and turns as the pages keep whirling by. I found myself laughing at times and crying at others. The level of emotions this characters experience together as well as alone is very enthralling. A well blend of angst that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading.

As far as this group of misfits goes … I don’t think I could possible love these characters more than I already do after finishing this book. Simon and Viv have such a precious and yet precarious relationship that the time they spent together in Siberia caused a connective bond to form between them that was rather unexpected but very helpful when it comes to some of the more difficult situations they find themselves caught in. And of course we can’t forget the wickedly delectable Brig who just oozes sexual finesse whenever he walks into a room. His relationship with Viv is on the edge of exposure to the rest of the pack because Brig is so protective of her that he is causing scenes that he doesn’t realize he’s bringing attention to because of his problems with trusting Simon. But out of all of them the one character that surprised me to most and caused me to change my feelings regarding his nature was … Iov. So much happens to him that my heart broke and his hurt made me want to give him the hug he so desperately needed.

Final Thought …

In the end, the four pull together with the help of the other trusting pipers to overcome such disastrous and devastating events that leave special lives loss and many on the precipice of shock and surprise.

I personally can’t wait for the next installment to be available so I can catch up with this group once again. Although at this present time the details of that are inconclusive but I for one sure hope it’s not too long of a wait period.

Blood Memory

Blood Memory by Rosalind Hartmann

3.75 out of 5 Licks

Two rival species come together to search for answers to the Blood Memory that has been passed down to all Hammerthynn and Jameson werewolves, the Alpha’s Pipers. Vampires Simon Huntington and his partner Ellis Duban are the subject of this memory of intense betrayal and deception, yet no one has any recollection of what they did – not the werewolves or the vampires.

Vivienne Sena is part of the Alpha’s core of Pipers led by her mate, and secret lover, Commander Brig Jameson. Taking up an offer from Simon to delve deeper into the blood memory, they travel to Ireland to speak to her adoptive father, Elder of the Hammerthynns, Vigo Hammerthynn, who is also the father of the pack’s Beta, Iov Hammerthynn, cousin to Brig.

With only a name, Vivienne and Simon leave for Siberia as the Piper compound in Ireland is besieged by unknown assailants and wiped out. Proof of an inner conspiracy is revealed and the race to capture Vivienne, now being blamed for the attack, begins with her lover leading the pack.

This book is like an episode of 24 … you know where Jack Bower is seem with a building blowing up behind him or a bullet about to hit him and then like magic the bullet slows down and gets sucked backwards in rewind mood were it flashes back to 24 hours earlier. Well that is how Blood Memory starts off except instead of an FBI agent or whatever the hell Keifer Sutherland played in that show you have 2 wolves, a vampire and an avalanche only you don’t know who the avalanche started or why they are on the run and BAM 3 days earlier.

I tell you getting to that avalanche scene seemed to take forever … so forever I wanted to throw my precious Nook across the room or at someone’s head.

That’s how frustrated I was getting with this story. Not only where the 3 days going by at a snail’s pace but there were moments were I wasn’t sure if I was reading a flashback or if it was in real time. It confused me there for a bit and I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to finish reading the book … which is epic because giving up in the middle of a book is just not my thing.

frustration6

Luckily around chapter 10 or maybe 11 (I think) the plot really shines becoming more fast paced and very interesting material starts to unravel drawing me more into the story.

The main characters are very fascinating and have a lot of different attributes that make them likable and unique. The interaction between Simon and Viv was on point when it came to their amusing tease-worthy banter and sexual attraction even though the odds were working against them from the very beginning therefore they make a very well – matched team. Simon, Viv and Brig all possess a depth of appeal that the more I read about them and what was being revealed the more I found myself wanting certain outcomes to transpire.

Final Thought …

This was the first book I’ve read by this author and even though I was having some issues in the beginning I’m glad I finished reading Blood Memory because Ms. Hartmann brings a new-fangled (pun intended) approach to the vast paranormal world of vampires and werewolves that I found to be innovative and extraordinarily refreshing. So now I’m off to start the sequel to Blood Memory … Beneath the Surface.

I’m glad the reviewer stayed with it and finished the book. I know that’s hard for me to do when I do my own reviews. I appreciate her honesty and helpful feedback, plus her review was written hilariously. Much love and thank you! =)

WIP – Brig and Viv

47k words. Huh. This is no longer a “side project” but full on “side BOOK”. Still have tons of editing to do, but I’m maybe 3/4s of the way done gathering up all the ‘Brig and Viv’ material.

RIP Tom Clancy 1947 – 2013 Writer’s Digest 2001 Interview

Original Source: Writer’s Digest

“I just keep it simple: Tell the damn story.”

I’ve had friends suggest writing courses, expensive programs, and usually from people who haven’t written anything similar to what I try to write, but that’s cool – everyone wants to be helpful. I’ve finished two books, start to finish, with just microsoft word and probably 30% hearing loss due to how loud I listen to my music when I write, but I think Clancy’s advice to keep it simple and just write the story is the best one I’ve read. Found a Writer’s Digest article featuring Tom Clancy that they reposted. I’m reposting it here.

A legendary storyteller is lost.

Blood Memory: Vignettes

brignVivsig

If you’ve read Blood Memory: Book 1 and Book 2, you know who Brig and Vivienne are. Bound together by their scents, they are soul mates from two very different worlds. Both werewolves, Brig is the Commander of the Alpha Pipers, direct descendant of the Jameson family, and enigmatic best friend of the new Alpha Hammerthynn. Vivienne Sena is the adopted daughter of Vigo Hammerthynn and was raised as an Outcast – the nomadic, cast out pack of wolves who followed the false Alpha generations ago. They are secret lovers when you meet them in Book 1 – but ever wonder just how they met?

Coming soon – a short love story. The who, why, how, and when of Brig and Vivienne.

Showing, not telling…

Original source: Socialpolitan – Fiction Writing Craft

You know the fiction-writing dictum “Show, don’t tell.” But how does it apply in practical terms when it comes to communicating characterization without exposition?

People in different eras have unique speech and speech patterns, but restrain yourself from indulging in periodization in your historical novel; if your Elizabethan-era characters talk like Shakespeare’s, people 1) won’t understand much of what they say and 2) will be distracted by your forced — and fatally flawed — attempt at authenticity.

Do, however, immerse yourself in that period’s society: What did people know about history and sociology and psychology and spirituality (even if they didn’t use those terms to identify them)? What were prevailing political and social and religious viewpoints? How open were people about expressing themselves? Be careful not to let modern sensibilities intrude on the way your characters speak and think, but do permit them and their speeches and thoughts to be accessible to modern readers.

The extent to which characters will express their ideas and opinions, or ruminate about them, and the language with which they will do so, depends on a few other factors:

People of different generations and different social backgrounds generally speak differently. Geriatric characters should exhibit speech and speech patterns distinct from juvenile ones and consistent with norms unless an exception is a deliberate dramatic point — for instance, if a teenager who has switched bodies with an elderly person is trying to pass vocally as well as visually as a senior citizen.

Likewise, the speech and thoughts of well-educated characters will usually be distinguishable from that of those of others with less formal schooling. Of course, no one should assume that a person with only a high school education is less intelligent than a college graduate, or the reverse, but their vocabulary and the level of sophistication of their thoughts will, unless they are self-educated, likely differ.

Further individualization of characters makes fiction writing more vivid. How does one’s personality affect words and thoughts? A repressed person’s speech patterns will differ significantly from an extrovert’s. A tense, angry character will exhibit different rhythms of speech and thought than a carefree individual.

Length of speeches and thoughts is also a consideration: Children do not soliloquize, and philosophically minded people do not tend to make snap judgments. Match the extent to which people speak and think to their personalities. But keep in mind that various sentence lengths and paragraph lengths have differing dramatic values, too — long passages tend to be soothing (but, when too long, are soporific), while short bursts create or maintain tension (though, in excess, can be just as wearying as extensive paragraphs).

In essence, capitalize on your knowledge of individual characters to establish vocabulary and modes of speech and thought, as well as on familiarity with societal norms for speaking and thinking appropriate to the era in which your characters live.

My webpage is being weird.

Not that I’m updating it a whole lot, but when I do, I prefer dos equis…no, I’m kidding. I do need to update it more, to be, at the very least, a somewhat interesting person.

Not sure what the deal is with my webpage – sometimes I get the ‘ANTICIPATE’ picture and it’s difficult and won’t sleep through the night. I think it’s fixed. Wish people read this more so I’d know. =x
