Mark McClelland studied Computer Science and Creative Writing at the University of Michigan's Residential College, where he won a Hopwood Award for poetry. After graduating in 1994, he promptly sold his soul to his software career, and recently entered into a contractual obligation to a Karma Faerie with the hope of winning it back. He writes in search of truths that defy simple, direct expression, and publishes to share his discoveries with others. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Nancy, and two cats, and is currently working on his second book. He also writes poetry for his wife, sole member of the Poem-of-the-Month Club.

I also had a short story in Communications of the ACM, and recently started pursuing publication of my poetry, for the first time in at least twenty years. I'm working on a short story that I think will be worth sharing via publication, as well as another novel. To be honest, I think I'm selective to a fault about what I choose for potential publication. If I don't feel my writing really has something to add to the world, I stow it away -- and what does, when there are so many writers creating so much great literature?(less)

If I can nail down my own motives for creating something, I can often take that insight, go back to my notes and manuscript with a fresh eye, and see a way forward. Which often involves ripping out whatever the most recent scene or dialog was, since that's what got me into the dead end in the first place.

I also find that taking a shower works wonders. Nothing spurs my mind into a state of distracted creativity quite like a hot shower.(less)

New Book: "Curse of the Healing Kiss"

Exciting news! I just sent a draft of my upcoming novella, "Curse of the Healing Kiss", to a developmental editor. My hope is to publish it later this year.

So much wonderful wordplay. And I love the theme that hope, love, and valor keep freedom alive. The book also makes for excellent reading-aloud at bedtime. It falls short of being a great story, but Thurber's clever use of language makes up for what ...more

Rainer Maria Rilke
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”
Rainer Maria Rilke

Fyodor Dostoyevsky
“Man, do not pride yourself on your superiority to the animals, for they are without sin, while you, with all your greatness, you defile the earth wherever you appear and leave an ignoble trail behind you -- and that is true, alas, for almost every one of us!”
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Immanuel Kant
“Rules for happiness: something to do, someone to love, something to hope for.”
Immanuel Kant
