Author of A Kiss from Cupid, Carly Huss, lives half her life in Lewisville, Texas and the other half in fantasy land. She’s been known for telling stories since she could string sentences together, but it wasn’t until she developed a love for fiction that her stories morphed into tales and eventually novels. Now she uses writing as therapy—taking her fears, insecurities, and dreams and giving them to characters who can tackle them for her. She can’t grasp how everyone doesn’t do it.

She is the leader and founder of North Texas Writers, a critique group made of writers who are passionate about helping each other become authors. She writes Young Adult and Adult novels, often with a touch of sci-fi/fantasy, always with a handful of kissing.

I think the most broad advice I could give is to imagine the specific type of reader who you hope will read your book.

In conversation, we tell the same story different ways according to our audience. The facts stay the same, but the way we tell it would be different. We use different language, go into different details according to that person's personality, leave out things we know a specific person won't care about.

Telling a story in a book should be the same way. Someone who picks up a book with a kissing couple on the front wants to be swept away by the details of a romance, while someone who picks up a book with a gun on the front is probably looking for some face-paced action.

When it's all said and done, not every person is going to like every book. So don't write for everyone, write for the person who would enjoy the story you want to tell most. (less)

As of March 2020, I have few different projects.
I'm reworking the second Nine Lives novel. I wrote it years ago, and have learned a lot since then, so I'm applying my new knowledge and making it shine.
I'm also working on the second draft of a YA contemporary novel called To Dream or Not to Dream that I hope you will all get to read some day.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Lara Jean Song Covey writes love letters to the boys she majorly loves then locks them away in her hot box. For her eyes only. “My letters are for when I don't want to be in love anymore. They're for good-bye. Because after I write in my letter, I'm not longer consumed by my all-consuming love...My letters set me free. Or at least they're supposed to.” ― Jenny Han, To All the Boys I've Loved Befor Read more of this blog post »
