Are You Lukewarm? Take the Test

Lukewarm is what you get when you mix hot with cold. It’s mixing the white-hot love of God with the stone-cold commands of the Bible. It’s mixing the new and everlasting covenant of grace with the obsolete covenant of law. Are you lukewarm? You might be if… 1. You think Christians need the law The law is meant to lead you to Jesus so that you may be justified by faith (Gal 3:24). If you have Jesus, you don’t need the law. You don’t need it to guide you, teach you, or show you how to live for...

The Day and the Hour

But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. (Matthew 24:36) The disciples thought that the temple would come down when Jesus returned at the end of the age. To them, these events were connected. But history shows they are not. The temple has come down, but we are still looking forward to Christ’s triumphant return. The fall of the temple and the Second Coming of Jesus. The first event was predictable – Jesus gave the disciples forty...

When is the End of the Age?

The disciples asked, “What will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3). What did they mean by the end of the age? Jesus said, “The gospel would be preached all over the world then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). What end did he have in mind? Did he mean the end of the temple, or the end of the age, or both? Was Jesus answering the disciples’ question? It will help if we examine the original meaning of their words: The disciples: “When is the end (sunteleia) of...

When are the Last Days?

Here’s a question that has been the subject of much debate: When are the last days? Mr. Futurist: “We’re living in them! Study the signs and you will see that we are the last generation.” Mr. Preterist: “The last days are the final days of the temple and AD70.” As you can see, the last day’s question is a contentious one. Are the last days now? Are they in the future? Or the past? The Bible provides an unequivocal answer. Altogether there are about a dozen last-days scriptures. Half of them a...

A Grace-Based View of the End Times

My new end times’ book has just launched and some of you don’t care. You don’t care because you’ve been burned by bad eschatological preaching. Or you’ve had unpleasant conversations. Discussing the end times is like discussing politics. No matter what you say, half the people in the room jump on you “End times? Who needs it? Jesus wins, that’s all I need to know.” This was certainly my view a few years ago. But then some of you began asking me about the year AD70, signaling a growing interes...

“AD70 and the End of the World” – paperback out today!

Amazon have ruined my plans.

I was going to release my new end times’ book on September 24 because some of you think the world is going to end on September 23. The timing would’ve been perfect.

But Jeff Bezos had other ideas. He must’ve read my book. “Have you read this?” he would’ve said to his minions. “It’s the best end times books ever. We need to launch this sooner rather than later, and definitely before the world ends in September.”

At least, that’s what I guess happened. Because desp...

The “I Wills” of God

At the foot of Mt Sinai the Israelites boasted “We will do everything the Lord commands” (Ex 19:8). Perhaps you have said something similar, but this is a fatal boast, and a recipe for disaster. Make an impossible promise and you will invariably break it. What the Lord demands you cannot provide. This is the lesson of the old covenant, yet many have not learned it. They’re stuck on the vicious cycle of making and breaking promises, repenting, then promising to do better next time. Oh, how we...

The Prayer of Faith

Much of what passes for prayer is wishful thinking. “Oh Lord, please heal Mary.” I’m sure you can, Lord. I just don’t know if you will. “I beg you to heal Tom.” But if you do, no one will be more surprised than me. You can pretty much guarantee these sorts of prayers won’t change anything because they are devoid of faith. The prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. (James 5:15a) If you are not sure that God will answer your prayers, he probably wo...
