Prince Arjun learns a lesson from a fairy | Folktale of India
Once upon a time, there lived a prince called Arjun. Prince Arjun was a fine warrior and had all traits a great ruler must have. But his father, King Yayati, had a different opinion. He didn’t want Prince Arjun to ascend the throne and be his successor after he retires. This concern of King Yayati often bothered Prince Arjun and one day he decided to forever abandon his Kingdom. One night without informing anyone he mounted on his horse. He rode to the jungle. The dense jungle was infamous inhabit of dangerous animals. He decided to look around for shelter. He dismounted from his horse and walked to a hut beside the jungle. He called out for help. No one replied, and he realized that the hut is empty. He walked in, something very fragrant tickled his nose. He followed the fragrance to the kitchen and saw a vessel. He uncovered the lid. Not only the food smelt good but it was also very delicious looking. He could not control his hunger and started eating it. He finished the entire vessel, relishing every morsel. Contented Prince Arjun dozed off near the vessel.
Just then, an old woman entered the hut. She had dry twigs in her hand. The weather was cold; maybe she got them to set the fire. Seeing Prince Arjun beside the empty vessel filled her with immense anger. She couldn’t control her anger and threw a huge cloth bundle on Prince Arjun’s head. He woke up with a start. The old woman’s angry expression was enough to tell him his mistake.
‘How dare you eat my food,’ shouted old woman.
Prince Arjun begged her for forgiveness. It was very late at night.
‘Now you cook for me,’ she said irritably.
He started cooking. Prince Arjun was a warrior and was taught how to make food for survival in the jungle or when on a secret mission. He cooked and offered food to the old woman. She had a bite and threw the plate away. Prince Arjun decided to make the food again. Once again, the plate was shoved onto his face. This happened almost around five times.
This time Prince Arjun couldn’t control it, and he vented it out, ‘It is so difficult to make you happy.’
‘Then why you have to make me happy?’ said the old woman.
Her words surprised Prince Arjun.
‘Why you have to keep everyone happy if your father thinks you are not fit to be a King, you simply do your duty with honesty. Don’t worry about other opinions,’ said the old woman.
Prince Arjun realized that he could not keep everyone happy in life.
‘Thank you for making me understand this. But how do you know about me?’ he asked.
The old woman then transformed herself into a fairy. Surprised Prince Arjun thanked her and came back to this kingdom, determined more than ever to serve his people.
Moral- Don’t try too hard to keep everyone happy in life.

King Yayati’s witty Minister, Veer | Folktale of India
King Yayati’s had many loyal ministers in his kingdom. King Yayati was very grateful to all of them. But his favorite Minister was Veer. Minister Veer and King Yayati studied in the same gurukul and since then their friendship grew from strength to strength. Minister Veer’s loyalty was well known in the kingdom. King Yayati often asked Minister Veer to accompany him on confidential and dangerous missions like fighting with malevolent forces and save their kingdom. Sometimes he used to order Minister Veer to go alone on these missions. Minister Veer was very brave. These missions never feared him. In fact, he enjoyed them and loved saving his kingdom from enemies. One day King Yayati ordered Minister Veer to go check lands on the outskirts of his kingdom and submit a report to him. Minister Veer first headed to the north. This side was covered with dense forests. He went inside the forest and stayed there for three days with an Adivasi group. He was touched with their hospitality and enjoyed his stay. He made a detailed report of their requirements. Once the report was finished, he looked up in the air and made a peculiar sound. Soon the pigeon arrived.
He clutched the report in the string on his neck.
‘Go my dear friend pigeon, give this to King Yayati,’ said Minister Veer.
King Yayati read it carefully. Minister Veer mentioned the humble Adivasi group and their requirements- clothes, food, education etc. King Yayati ordered his royal servants to make the arrangements. The Adivasi group was very happy to receive food, clothes etc. King Yayati took them under his care. Soon this story became very famous.
Minister Veer who was in still traveling from North to South side of the kingdom. It had been a month since he left the royal palace on receiving King’s order. Finally, he arrived on the outskirts of the south side. He saw a huge mountain, he assumed nothing was beyond that and started leaving back. It started raining. He and his horse took shelter under a huge tree. He and his horse witnessed something very magical. With each droplet of water falling, the land was transforming into a magical garden.
Flowers were talking with each other, birds were singing and dancing, trees were generously offering fruits to birds. Minister Veer looked at it very mesmerized and entered the garden. He saw a lake, he went near it, he put his hands into it, to drink it, along with water came a handful of diamonds, the second time to put his hand into it, came a handful of pearls along with water. He was mesmerized.
He made a detailed report of his experience. Once the report was finished, he looked up in the air and made a peculiar sound. Soon the pigeon arrived.
He clutched the report in the string on his neck.
‘Go my dear friend pigeon, give this to King Yayati,’ said Minister Veer.
King Yayati read it carefully. Soon the news of mysterious land and lake started spreading. It reached the ears of goons, they reached the south of the kingdom. Minister Veer who was still there caught several wanted goons, whom he wanted to arrest since long.
Minister Veer revealed that there was no mysterious land or lake, he made the story to attract and catch goons.
Minister Veer was praised for his bravery and wit.
Moral of the story- Not every story is a true story.

Folk Stories for Kids | Minister Veer of Vijaynagar Kingdom
Minister Veer was one of the most respected chiefs of Vijaynagar kingdom. His job was to administer and ensure smooth functioning of the royal palace. He usually started his mornings doing yoga in the royal garden. He loved its serene environment and found it a perfect place to begin his day. Managing the royal garden was part of his job, and its beauty often fetched Veer praises from royal guest as well as the King Krishnadevaraya. Fragrant flowers of the garden not only made air aromatic but also filled fragrant pride in Veer.
He was very proud of gardener Ramu, who worked so hard in maintaining it. Whenever someone praised Veer for the garden, he never forgot to mention Ramu’s name. Ramu too was happy to work under Veer’s leadership.
Ramu stayed with his family in the small hut made in the garden. Veer often visited him in the hut after doing yoga. Today Ramu was not home, Veer was received by his daughter Rohini. Rohini was a very pretty girl and very generous too. She offered Veer buttermilk while he waited for Ramu. When Ramu came home, Veer expressed his desire to marry Rohini. Elated Ramu accepted the proposal for his daughter but with one condition.
‘Tell me your condition, Ramu,’ said Veer.
‘Sir, I will soon retire from the post of royal gardener. My family has been serving royal palace from last three generations. I want to continue this tradition. If you promise to hire my son in my place when I retire, I will marry my daughter to you,’ replied Ramu.
Veer made the promise. Rohini and Veer were very happy.
After few months, the time came to honor Ramu’s promise. Veer went to visit King to take his permission. But Veer was informed that King Krishnadevaraya has already hired a royal gardener. Disappointed Veer came to meet Ramu. Hearing news Ramu became very angry and accused Veer of dishonoring his promise and he called off Veer’s marriage with Rohini. Veer tried to convince Ramu. But he didn’t hear anything.
In weeks’ time, he fixed Rohini’s marriage with a farmer. Upset Veer decided to take a break from the royal palace’s work. He mounted on his horse Badal and went to the outskirts of Vijaynagar kingdom. He waited for boatman’s arrival. The boat arrived with a passenger. Veer was about to board the boat when he saw two goons attack passenger. He jumped to rescue, he put a tough fight. He successfully saved passenger’s life.
‘Thank you, nobleman for saving my life,’ said passenger.
Veer boarded the boat and left. He came back to Vijaynagar kingdom. He was surprised to see the same passenger work as a royal gardener. He remembered King Krishnadevaraya say that he had already hired someone.
Veer shared his story with the passenger. Passenger promised to hire Rohini’s brother as his assistant gardener. Thrilled Veer ran to Ramu’s hut and shared the news. Ramu accepted his mistake and happily married his daughter Rohini to Veer.
Moral of the story- Sometimes you have to let things go. Sometimes you have to stop caring for a minute. The bottom line is this; when one person stops being a part of your life, another one will come and fill that empty space. Leave the ones who left in the past, right where they belong, and never look back. They will come back to you if they were yours.

‘There is a small river in the jungle. It is magical. Anything I put in that water becomes fragrant. I buy these flowers for you from the village and then go to the river, splash some river water on these flowers,’ answered Murli.
‘How do you know about that river?’ asked Radha.

She wore the gajra and thanked Murli for it. Happily, they ate their breakfast. Murli went to his farms, while Radha went to the weekly village fair.
