One the author, James Joyce, the second, a force of nature, Billy Brooks Carr from Texas. I did not meet either but they had at least one element in common. Both had an utter detestation of bad authority and a compulsion to let that bad authority know exactly what they thought of it. And so that is why Joyce and Texas (Billy's native state) are key elements in "Set at Random" and indeed why I wrote the book. I wanted to draw a character who would challenge bad authority.(less)
