Stephanie Landsem writes novels that bring the unknown women of the Bible to life. The Living Water series—The Well, The Thief, and The Tomb, a Novel of Martha—are biblically authentic stories of women transformed by encounters with Jesus. In Walk In Her Sandals, Experiencing Christ’s Passion Through the Eyes of Women, Stephanie brings to life the days of Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost for individual prayer or book clubs. Gaze Upon Jesus, Experiencing Christ’s Childhood Through the Eyes of Women, is a collaborative scripture study of the joyful mysteries surrounding Advent and the Christmas season.

Stephanie lives in Minnesota with her husband, random adult children, two cats—Leeloo and Lando, a dog—Layla (yes, we do get tongue-tied), and

I am currently writing more, so watch my Facebook author page for updates. There are SO many great female characters in the Old Testament that I'd love to write about: Deborah, Lot's wife and daughters, and Eve are the first that come to mind. Who's story would you like to read?

Then, they asked for a a synopsis for a second book in The Living Water Series. I was terrified.

I knew that I wanted the series to hinge on the life-changing miracles of Jesus and that I wanted this book to start with the healing of the man born blind but that was all I knew. So, I did what I always do when I don't know what else to do -- I called my sister.

Over the next hour, we talked -- about books and characters that we loved and why we loved them. We talked about Dickens and his street urchins, about Shakespeare and girls who disguised themselves as boys, and eventually about how we both loved the good thief and had always wondered about his story. By the time I got off the phone, I had a story percolating in my brain and 24 hours later I sent a synopsis off to my agent for The Thief.

Thanks, Rachel, for your help with The Thief and for all the times you've been there for me!(less)

Historic Epidemics: the Dancing Plague of 1518

A depiction of dancing mania, on the pilgrimage of epileptics to the church at Molenbeek
Pieter Brueghel the Younger, 1564

As my last post on the Historic Epidemic series, this one is a little less serious. And yes, the Dancing Plague of 1518 was a real thing—no matter how ridiculous it sounds.

This mysterious plague wasn’t a one-time occurrence in 1518 but something that historians find reference

Really an exceptional read. I didn't think Lisa Wingate could top Before We Were Yours but this book was even better. The dual timeline was brilliant and the two stories twined together and touched upon each other in surprising ways.

The Only Woman in the Room by Marie Benedict
"What should have been a fascinating story suffered from boring writing. Also, the whole point was to show how Lamarr was a multi-faceted woman — inventor, actress, etc. — but the majority of the book is about her clothes, looks, and acting. Occasiona" Read more of this review »
