Katie Carroll began writing after her 16-year-old sister unexpectedly passed away. Writing was a way for Katie to help her sister live on in the pages of a story. It also made her realize that she wanted to pursue writing as a career. In addition to penning novels for teens and kids, she edits novels, plays soccer, and collects signed copies of books.

A black butterfly fluttered by, such a contrast to all the yellow swallowtails flitting about. I started thinking about the juxtaposition of the fragility of a butterfly and the symbolism of the color black. It got me thinking about human nature and wondering if someone has been trained to be a killer if they can ever not be one. That led to a story about a young woman who was trained as a spy but loses her memory. Can she really start with a clean slate or will her evil past always doom her future? And that's the central question behind my work-in-progress, a YA thriller called BLACK BUTTERFLY(less)

Taking a life break (where you do some actual living instead of staring at the words that aren't getting written) is always a good way to get back on track. Sometimes, though, you just have to write through the block. Don't worry about if the words are good, just keep writing!(less)

Where the keynotes are largely inspirational, the panels tend to get more into the nitty-gritty of publishing and the craft of writing. These are snippets from each panel, which are done in a Q&A style and often turn into conversations, so these are simple highlights I’ve pulled out...
