I did encourage Richard in his career, along with others who went on to be better-known than I am. We each had our own roles in his life, and each saw him differently. I preferred to stay in the background more than others, and as gifted as Richard was, he included parts of our conversations in some of the songs he later recorded. I am glad to know his songs touched your heart! (less)

I also often light a traditional candle for him and frequently I'll travel to his grave 80 miles from my home to add a stone to it. I began this little observance because in the Jewish faith, which Richard admired so much, it is customary on this anniversary to do a good deed in the name of the one who has departed to keep his name alive. I have written Singing from Silence to pass on even a fraction of the hope, meaning and purpose Richard's life gave to me, so I am grateful on this anniversary to freely share a number of copies with the public. Thank you for caring enough to ask. (less)

The Parable of the Sign

A man on a journey saw a sign.  It was tall, broad, but plain and on it was painted, "The Kingdom of God is Within You."  So the man looked all around the sign, under it, and above it--everywhere he could think of.  He didn't see any kingdom, so he just wandered off and stopped looking for it.

A second traveler made his way to the sign and became inspired.  He decided the sign was the best thing t Read more of this blog post »

Samuel Johnson
“Curiosity is, in great and generous minds, the first passion and the last.”
Samuel Johnson, Works of Samuel Johnson

Kahlil Gibran
“A friend who is far away is sometimes much nearer than one who is at hand. Is not the mountain far more awe-inspiring and more clearly visible to one passing through the valley than to those who inhabit the mountain?”
Kahlil Gibran

Albert Einstein
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
Albert Einstein

Rich Mullins
“Is that "great cloud of witnesses" watching my way so as to judge or is it informing my way so that I may walk it? Do they hide the light so that I cannot see it or do they filter it so that its blaze will not blind me? Can a man see God face to face and live? Can I not see an eclipse better through a pinhole in a paper than without it?

We can't so much see light as we can see things because of it. So I do not meet God in a vacuum -- I meet Him in the world He has provided for me to meet Him in -- in a world of events and of places, of history (time and space), in a world of lives of people and their records of their encounters. I meet God in this world -- in the world of these things...

...and this is the world as best as I can remember it.”
Rich Mullins

The Paradoxical Commandments

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.”
