Elaine Russell began writing adult and children's fiction over twenty years ago, finding her true vocation at last. She loves traveling and most of her novels are based in part on places she has visited. She enjoys weaving the culture and history of other countries and people into her stories. Her books have won numerous awards.

Her latest adult novel (October 14, 2018), In the Company of Like-Minded Women, explores the complexities of bonds between sisters and family at the start of the 20th century when women struggled to determine their future and the “New Woman” demanded an equal voice. Three sisters are reunited in 1901 Denver following a family rift many years before. Each sister faces critical decisions regarding love, work, and the

I am using some of my family's history in an adult novel I am working on now -- based on my great grandmother who was one of the early doctors in Colorado and other background from both my father's and mother's families. I never met my great grandmother and know only a few facts about her. I have to imagine her character, her motivations and the challenges she faced. It is difficult taking real events from life and making them into compelling fiction. You must isolate the germ of the idea and develop the story as it comes to you. Trying to make it 100% accurate to reality can squelch the creative process and make the book very boring. That being said, it's essential to thoroughly research the era and make the details of life in that time as realistic as possible.(less)

New Year's Resolutions

Happy 2019, another year of resolutions that I'll try to keep and probably will only partially, occasionally follow. But it's always good to take stock of your life and how to make things better. There are the usual kinds of promises, like trying to eat less sugar and continuing to exercise regularly. I'll probably have lapses, but I hope to be more diligent. I want to do more interesting things a Read more of this blog post »
