I'd waste time disappearing down a cul-de-sac or dithering at a crossroads. Sometimes the solution was to keep searching, or to choose any route and see where it led. But after a while I'd need to stop struggling, and step back and move on - to a different part of the book or even to something else altogether. This would give space for new ideas to form, and often a new perspective when I returned.(less)
