Tried and True, Chapter 196: Homesick

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 196: Homesick

A new restlessness stirred in Tamaes’s wings. Omri noticed first. The little angel flitted to his shoulder and crawled under draping layers of fiery light, pushing and peeping as if in answer to the subtle shift.

Tamaes drew up his wing, creating a pocket for his friend. “Is this a new game?”

But he couldn’t camouflage the truth from Taweel. Once his mentor’s attention fixed on something, it was a force worth reckoning.

Taweel asked, “Why does wistfulness whisper through your wings?”

Tamaes summed up his longing as best he could. “I think … I am ready to go home.”

Happy Birthday, Baird!

“Why are you carrying a pink box?”

“To convey it to our destination.”

“Which is …?”

“As yet unspecified.”

“Why are you being so mysterious? And don’t get me wrong … you totally rock the tall, dark, and mysterious thing. Must be the accent.”

“This way.”

“Okay, that’s it. I’m pulling rank.”

“If you insist.”

“Gimme the box.”

“With felicitations.”

“Felici–what, now? You are being so … whoa. Are these doughnuts?”

“Most assuredly.”

“With sprinkles!”

“Multi-colored.”

“You are totally up to something! Unbelievable. I didn’t know you had it in you!”

“This way.”

“Through here?”

“After you.”

“Why do I get the feeling I should make a grand entrance?”

“If you insist.”

“On three. One … two … three … TA-DA!”

Baird Chibi by Terri Delgado

Myron Baird

birthday: August 8, which just happens to be today!

age:
thirty-something (on paper), a First One who outdates Time

day job: worship leader at Deo Volente (a.k.a. the DeeVee)

secret identity: angel of the order zamarim, a Worshiper

Thanks to Kester, our guest of honor has arrived, so let’s get this party started! Participation in the festivities will earn you extra chances at door prizes, so look over your options. A prize drawing will take place at noon (Pacific) on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. We’ll drop your name in the proverbial hat if you:

♦ Wish Baird a happy birthday! (Confetti tosses optional.)

Give Baird a T-shirt on Pinterest! (His collection is epic.)

♦ Share something MULTI on the Reader Show-and-Tell board.

♦ Send Baird a song recommendation! (Christian stuff is his fave.)

♦ Show support! Review “Angels in Harmony” on Amazon. (There are currently 8!)

♦ Become a newsletter subscriber and/or “like” Christa’s Amazon author page.

♦ Take part in the Reverse Q&A! (Keep scrolling. You’ll hit it soon.)

♦ Make Christa laugh. (Highly subjective, but fun!)

You can pin and rec and chat as often as you want from now until Tuesday, but it’s one chance per category. (So twenty song recommendations will still earn you one chance.) That means you can enter your name in the drawing up to eight times. (How appropriate for an 8/8 birthday!) Households with siblings, I want to hear from all of you! Note: If you’re on Pinterest but haven’t been added to any of the Threshold Series group boards yet, speak up in a comment.

Reverse Q&A

Everyone’s always asking Baird questions. He has a few for you!

♦ My signature color is MULTI. Do you have a fave?

♦ Instruments are awesome. Do you play one?

♦ Unless you count apprentices in three-piece suits, I don’t have a pet. Do you?

♦ My cooking skills come to a screeching halt right around toaster pastries. What’s your specialty?

♦ If you could hang out with one of my Flightmates for the day, who would you choose? (You totally don’t have to pick me just because it’s my b-day.)

♦  ^__^ d Do you have a favorite emoticon? Show me!

And naturally, if you have questions for Baird, go for it. Kester’s actually here, too, so you can also chat with him. Save up your other Threshold-related questions for the big Q&A coming up in just two weeks (8/22).

Tried and True, Chapter 195: Hard to Imagine

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 195: Hard to Imagine

“I want to train,” Tamaes said.

“I cannot teach you to love … any more than I can teach myself to unlove.” Taweel flicked his apprentice’s breastplate, right over his heart. “We were made for this, Tamaes.”

“What if I fall short?”

Taweel shook his head. “You cannot.”

Tamaes’s boots scuffed the earth. “But I cannot imagine it. I do not understand!”

“Which part.”

“This girl. You love her.”

“I do.”

“Even though she is gone?”

“Even so.”

“And you will never forget.”

“So it seems.”

Tamaes frowned. “Even though it makes you sad.”

“Your turn will come,” promised Taweel.

REMINDER: Baird’s Birthday

Dress the PartIt’s a surprise party…

Tomorrow (8/8) is the official on-paper birthday of a thirty-something worship leader by the name of Myron Baird. Kester and I will find a way to get him onto the blog in time for the festivities to begin. There’ll be swag for attendees and fabulous prizes for a fortunate few. You can chat with the birthday boy, give him t-shirts over on Pinterest, and share music recs all weekend long in order to increase your chances in the prize drawing. But the biggest question on my mind right now is … what should Baird wear to the party? Help Kester choose some “nice togs” in the comments! : )

Tried and True, Chapter 194: One Thing Remains

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 194: One Thing Remains

“The terrain changes the threat,” Taweel explained. “When I was here, the Fallen used to ooze up out of the river, whispering nightmares and stealing hope. Much different than those valleys, where every crevice and gulley is enough t– ”

Tamaes halted the lecture by driving both fists into his mentor’s breastplate. “Stop!”

Taweel grunted in surprise.

“You are rambling.” The boy’s eyes flashed. “You do not ramble.”

Silence echoed in the silted plain abandoned by everything—even the river.

Finally, Taweel said, “There is nothing left.”

“Teach me this,” Tamaes demanded. “Teach me how to love my charge forever.”

Tried and True, Chapter 193: Follow Me

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 193: Follow Me

Memories weighed heavily on Taweel as he struck out across the sea. Measured wingbeats barely kept him aloft. Ponderous. Pondering. What was the use in showing Tamaes where he’d served? Nothing remained. And yet Taweel was as sure of his course as a migrating bird.

A piece of his heart must have remained in Egypt.

“Too slow!”

Taweel was yanked from his ruminations by Tamaes, who zipped beneath him with an aerobatic twist and a small wave.

“Faster!” the boy urged. “Higher!”

Meeting his apprentice’s challenge with a powerful surge, Taweel chased another piece of his heart into the sky.
