Hemmie Martin spent most of her professional life as a Community Nurse for people with learning disabilities, a Family Planning Nurse, and a Forensic Mental Health Nurse working with young offenders. She spent six years living in the south of France. She now writes full time.

Hemmie created the DI Wednesday series, featuring DI Eva Wednesday and DS Jacob Lennox, set in and around Cambridge, with fictional villages. There are four books in the series so far.

Hemmie has also written a psychological thriller, Attic of the Mind, and three contemporary women's fiction, The Reluctant Mother, The Divine Pumpkin and Garlic & Gauloises. Mental health often features in her novels due to her background in forensic mental health nursing.

The first thing I do, before everything else, is not punish myself, and just accept that my mind needs refreshing from time to time.
Sometimes I leave the WIP and concentrate on another one to change my mental scenery. However, I may use the mind-map method to plan the plot and sub-plots, allowing a helicopter-mind view to see the bigger picture.
At other times, I just write, letting the characters have their say in what happens, and sometimes I'm really surprised with what comes out; although not always successful, I might add!
I also find simple things like walking the dog, reading, or watching TV can be enough to spark a flame. The trick is here, to always have a notebook to hand to jot down those thoughts.(less)

Before the publisher sees my work, I've edited it four or five times, then I edit another couple of times with one of the publisher's editors.
You need to see the submission process as a long distant run that requires a lot of training, and don't look at the other runners you perceive as passing you by, your time will come.
Everyone has acquired numerous rejection letters and emails. Don't let this part of the process upset or anger you. I would feel disappointed on the day I received the rejection, but the very next day, I was full of my usual positive bounce, spurring me on with my next writing project.
I know it's been said a million times, but please never give up; keep writing and honing your craft, as one day you'll be pleased you did.(less)

I'm really looking forward to reading your books."

Good morning Joanne, I trust you are having a peaceful Monday. Thank you for your kind comment, I am blushing. 'Pumpkin' has some romance in it, but 'Attic' is more of a dark suspense. I would be interested to know what you think at a later date of course!
Best wishes
Hemmie

Joanne Good Morning Hemmie
I'm really looking forward to reading your books.

Hemmie Martin Dear Lucinda
Pleased to be friends with you, and I am happy to support you on your writer's journey as much as a new author can - I still have much to learn too. I am also new to this site and am finding my way around. Have a fabulous weekend.
Hemmie x

Lucinda Dear Hemmie,
I would like to thank you for being my friend on Goodreads and for your lovely words of encouragement. It is a site that i am still fairly new to and just getting to grips with, and it is so nice to be able to converse with likeminded people and authors. Thank you once again.
Lucinda xx
