Book Review: Once Upon a Genie by Durriya Kapasi
Name: Once Upon a Genie
Publisher: Half Baked Beans
Author: Durriya Kapasi
Cover
A bright yellow cover with shades of cream and three silhouettes: two men and a woman, stars twinkling near one man. Makes for quite an interesting cover, doesn’t it? It could also be used for a thriller story, me thinks. It is intriguing, makes you wonder. What would be the story like?
Blurb
Before you read a book, any book for that matter, it is common practice to read the blurb. In this case, the blurb cont...

Book Review: The Secrets of Ghostwriting by D.R.Downer
The cover page has a line that says, ‘From Authors who have experienced every step’.
To my mind, this line is a culmination of all answers that one may come up with to procrastinate reading these helpful booklets penned by the authors of The Book Club (TBC).
[image error]Volume 3This book, the third in this series, is about a lesser known writing style – ghostwriting. To put it quite crudely, the author becomes a ‘ghost’ and allows someone else to walk away with their literary baby in exchange for a pr...
Book Review: Why Go Indie? 6 Reasons for Self-Publishing by Devika Fernando
Happy Sunday, folks!
I have signed up as a Reviewer with the wonderful guys at The Book Club. When they were talking about releasing a series of booklets aptly called ‘Writer’s Toolkit’, it made absolute sense to me to show interest in reading and reviewing them.
Actually, I happened to read Vol 4, first followed by Vol 2 and then Vol 1. But, for the sake of continuity, I am going to review and rate Vol 1 first.
Here is a quick look at the available volumes:

Book Review: A Sparrow Falls by Vicki Olsen
After some false starts and a tiring technical snag, I got my hands on Vicki Olsen’s ‘A Sparrow Falls’.
First, the book cover intrigued me. After reading the sample, I was quite keen to read the full story. I must say, the story took me by surprise. Vicki has this talent of giving life to words, which may otherwise remain one-dimensional.
She has captured the pathos of Sarah with finesse. Somewhere, her thoughts resonated with mine and the characters and the narrative stayed with me. I cou...

Book Review: Lady, You’re Not a Man by Apurva Purohit
I took some time to read this highly insightful and entertaining book written by Apurva Purohit. I realized that my friend who had initially suggested it to me was damn right about it. She had waved it in front of my uppity nose and swore her cat’s ass about its ability to elicit laughs. Elicit laughs, it surely did. It also struck a cord and kept me hooked till the end.
The core idea is that women at the workplace tend to behave like their male counterparts and somewhere miss out on benef...

Book Review: The Thirst for Intimacy by Pankaj Giri
[image error]
I had been planning to read Pankaj’s eBook for a while. Many incidents happened and it slipped my mind. I just could not get round to doing it.
Yesterday, it so happened that I was looking for a book title and I chanced upon Pankaj’s book in my library. Without wasting a moment, I noted it down in my To-Do list.
Today, during my lunch hour, I started reading it. Boy! Was I bowled over. Here is my review:
Soham lives in Bangalore and is pursuing CS Engineering. The latest offering from Pankaj...

Book Review: Half the Night is Gone, by Amitabha Bagchi
[image error]
ISBN: 978-9386-2287-03
Publisher: Juggernaut
Price: 599/-
Author: Amitabha Bagchi
[I got a copy from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.]
There is an elusive gift called literary brilliance. Very few authors achieve it in their lifetimes. Many strive to inch closer but rarely succeed. Bagchi has achieved it and I must humbly note that this book is a glowing example of how a literary masterpiece must be penned.
‘Half the Night is Gone’ is a stellar example of exemplary mastery...

Book Review: One and a Half Wife by Meghna Pant
[image error]
I am on a roll, reading Indian authors, almost randomly. On a hunch, I picked up this book. Sigh. I should be more careful. I must pay heed to the reviews before jumping at any Indian (celebrated) author’s book.
Judging purely on the basis of the plot line and fleshing out of characters, I would say, rather frankly, that there is nothing much to write about. It is a simple immigrant’s story. Linear and quite unimaginative.
On to the review:
It is the story of an ugly duckling (Shimla’s Amara...

ARC Book Review: The Soldier Prince, by Aarti V Raman
It is 06:00 A.M.
Even by my standards, it is early. Early for reading. Too early for writing a blog post.
My fuzzy brain has been successfully coaxed to wake up with an ample dose of caffeine. I would be lying if I say I don’t like the morning time. Despite being a night person, I quite like the feeling of being up early, staring at the neem tree swaying in the gentle breeze and the gentle rays of sunlight peeping in from behind the buildings. Damn! I like the mornings.
So, I have been waitin...

Book Review: When Padma Bani Paula
On Facebook, I share a group with the author. I came across her promotional posts. The curious cat that I am, I had to download it immediately to lay to rest my inquisitiveness about the subject.

I started reading it after researching a bit about the author.
Here is what I thought about it.
-The story is good. You nailed it, lady!
