I was raised in Alabama, so I know we Southerners don't hide our crazy people—we showcase them. Eccentric people make for the best stories, and we Southerners do love our stories. The need to tell stories has been a driving force in my life from childhood.

As a girl, my favorite books were mysteries and romances. When I realized there were books that featured both romance and mystery, I knew I'd found my calling. Now I get to play both matchmaker and murderer and get paid for it. Could there be a better job anywhere?

I love to hear from readers, so don't be shy! You can email me through my website, follow me on Twitter, or like my Facebook page and interact with me there: http://on.fb.me/MS3ldp And of course, you can always talk to me here on

Go do something else you love, because writing is not for people who don't love it passionately. It can be a difficult, thankless vocation, so if you're not truly called to do it, don't waste your time and energy. But if you're really a writer, there's no way you can quit. And if that's the case, here's some more advice:

Get in the habit of writing something every day, even if it's just a page. If you ever sell and want to have a successful writing career, you're going to have to develop the discipline to write daily, so you might as well get used to doing it before you sell. Plus, writing every day hones your writing skills, which is always a plus.

Don't let the big picture overwhelm you. Instead, look at the small, daily tasks you can accomplish. You may think, "I can't write a 300-page book. That's so many pages!" Well, yes, it is. But you can write one page a day, right? 250 words, more or less. You probably write more than 250 words a day on Facebook or in email. Or blog posts or, if you're particularly chatty, on Twitter. So write 250 words a day on your book, and before the year is out, you'll have 300 pages and, hopefully, a cohesive, engaging story.

And finally, when you find success, remember how you got there. Some of it was luck. Most of it was hard work. There were a lot of people who gave you love and support while you were getting it done, and there were probably people who tried to drag you down. Remember the ones who supported you and try to avoid the ones who didn't, because you now have to write the second book. And the third one. And the fourth...

Procrastination.

Okay, and I also try a few tricks like going back to re-read what I've written. Sometimes what's blocking me is something I've already written that has put me in a corner.

When it's a particular scene that's giving me trouble, rather than the whole book, I'll try writing the scene from an alternate point of view. I might be in the heroine's POV and can't get the scene to flow, but when I switch to the hero's POV, suddenly everything falls into place.

I also find that plotting ahead (if I haven't done so already) helps me get past the block.(less)
