Michael J. and 1 other person liked Don Jimmy's review of After He Died:
After He Died by Michael J. Malone
"I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

“After He Died” opens on a scene which (I’m assuming) everybody would dread. One of our two protagonists is burying her husband when she is asked to question her dead husbands past, and if he..." Read more of this review »

I loved this book. Louise Beech is fast becoming one of my favourite - drop everything to read her latest - writers. She is a natural born story-teller with an elegance about her writing that never fails to move me.
Michael J. and 1 other person liked Madeleine Black's review of House of Spines:
House of Spines by Michael J. Malone
"I downloaded House of Spines straight after I finished A suitable Lie and I wasn't disappointed. They are very different books but equally as gripping.
We meet Ranauld, an impoverished writer in his twenties with mental health issues who inherits..." Read more of this review »
Michael J. and 1 other person liked Karen Peterman's review of A Suitable Lie:
A Suitable Lie by Michael J. Malone
"This is on one level a psychological thriller and on another a study of abusive relationships. What makes it so readable is that in this story the husband is abused by his wife and - because A Suitable Lie is narrated by the husband - the reader u..." Read more of this review »

Brilliant! Loved this book. It was well-written, had a hugely entertaining central character and genuinely gave me goosebumps. Should come with a warning that says - should only be read during the hours of daylight!

First off - great title! Suggests atmosphere, which is something this debut author does incredibly well. Along with a strong sense of place and a slow-burn mystery that teases you along to a hugely satisfying end. A classy read!

“I should learn to listen. Allow the words to settle in that padded room between denial and acceptance. But it would be easier to place one foot on the low wall of a high bridge, spread my arms crucifix-wide, lean forward and will flight into the span of my arms.”
Michael J. Malone, House of Spines

“However necessary he knew it was though, being around other people could be exhausting; having to pretend that you were fine, having to make sure your mask was in place for every moment of every conversation. Being terrified that if it slipped, even for a second, people would get a glimpse into the sham of a human being he really was. Shawlands.”
Michael J. Malone, House of Spines
