It was five years ago that I started my epic saga Career Killer. After having so much fun working on my Lower Regions I wanted to do a whole fantasy book, but this time with, you know, talking and a plot and whatever.
I made it the way I have all my books, more or less making it up as I go. Unfortunately, I got about 80 pages in and had to give up. It turns out as much as I love drawing fantasy comics I don’t like writing them (my current career dilemma is finding subject matter that is fun to write and draw, something that’s proving tougher than you may think). I even tried a different format—weekly, one-page chapters with color highlights to make it more web-friendly—but I ran into the same writing problem and the lack of “likes” made me abandon the project a second time (at least this time I only did about 25 pages).

The idea of doing a fantasy comic still lingers in my brain, like a junky convinced he can give it one more try but I resist (I’m currently working on a sci-fi project which will hopefully scratch that fantasy itch).

Can you elaborate at all on that project you were working on at PC Magazine mentioned in a recent tweet?

It wasn’t anything exciting—they needed someone to do some story boards for a thing that didn’t pan out. The Spock thing was just a last minute doodle when I was done since we heard the news about Leonard Nimoy while we were working.
Did you send a question to Neil DeGrasse Tyson's podcast? Catching up on old episodes, and an "Alex Robinson" emailed in to ask a question about the physics of the Death Star blowing up a planet. Thought it could be you.
I did! I never actually heard that episode but I can only assume he was very impressed by my question and wanted to hang out with me.

Man, it’s been ages since I’ve posted! The good news is that it’s been because I’ve been busy:
—I’ve been working with Top Shelf on designing the cover of Our Expanding Universe, my new graphic novel which should, at long last, be coming out this fall. It’s my usual people-sitting-in-diners-talking-about-feelings.
—On the other hand, I’ve been working on a potential idea for my next next book which is currently a cosmic epic (picture above) inspired my recent interest in astronomy and Jim Starlin. I’m actually doing a lot of pre-production work on this one, figuring out all the plot details, character designs, etc, stuff I usually try to get by as quickly as possible to start producing pages. Experimenting with a different way of working and so on. In fact, I would love to do this one in color, although I’m a lousy colorist and have no idea how such a thing would happen. First things first. Based on my productivity you can probably look to download this one sometime in 2031.

Alex, you make it tough to shoot you an email. Your link takes me to my email site but doesn't provide one for you -- and I really don't want to sign up for Tumblr. Any other ideas?
Huh, I’ll look into fixing that. In the meantime you can always contact me at my gmail account of comicbookarob

I’m a big Dick head. I can’t say exactly what it is about Richard NIxon I find so fascinating but lately I find myself watching a lot of YouTube videos about the guy and wind up taking Oliver Stone’s Nixon out for a spin whenever it shows up on cable.
It’s not his politics—I’m sure if I was an adult during Nixon’s time I would’ve found him as infuriating as I did George W. Bush but now that he’s safely dead and entombed in history (Watergate was almost 50 years ago!) it’s easier to see him as a tragic figure. He was smart, ambitious, passionate but also paranoid, insecure and awkward.
I was excited to stumble across Nixon’s the One, a very strange series in which Harry Shearer reenacts the recordings Nixon made while in the White House. The make-up is horrible and distracting but in sharp contrast Shearer underplays it nicely.
