Mrs. Parker and Mr. Benchley

Mrs. Parker and Mr. Benchley
So here's something (hopefully) interesting: way, way back in 1998 a curious website (http://heyoscarwilde.com/ ) asked me to draw a favorite literary character or author. I drew Dorothy Parker and Robert Benchley, and you can see the results on the left.
Recently someone contacted me and asked if the original was for sale. Since I sold it long ago I suggested that I could recreate the drawing pretty easily. They agreed. When I sat down to draw it, however, I was hit with a dilemma: it had been years since I'd looked at the drawing and while I make no claims to being a Great Artist I had improved slightly since 1998. So do I draw the picture the best I can in my current style or stick as close as I can to the original?
I decided I had to do the best I could but would keep the same basic layout. I found the contrast and subtle differences interesting. I think the biggest difference is confidence. The 2012 version seems a lot smoother and assured. One small detail: I used to use black magic markers (!) to fill in my blacks, which you can definitely see at the bottom of the image (I use brushes now, as you can tell looking at the bottom of the 2012 version.
Remind me to redraw this again in 2016 and again in 2030. After that you're on your own.

BOX OFFICE TREK
I've done a bunch of Star Wars-inspired commissions over the years but this is actually the first time someone requested a Trek-themed mash-up. I was proud of how many details I didn't need reference for (though don't pay too much attention to the geography of that bridge) and it definitely put me in the mood to watch some TNG.

Sorry to hear about the passing of John Severin. I've always liked his art but he always seemed kind of overshadowed by the other E.C. artists—sort of the George Harrison compared to Wood and Kurtzman's Lennon/McCartney. Actually, I think I first became aware of his work through Cracked. It's odd that I first encountered him as a humor artist, though it's safe to say that since his career spanned more than 50 years there's probably not a single genre he didn't tackle.
Goodbye, funnyman…

Valentine for my best friend, Misha. Because, I mean, comics are great, but having someone you can stay up until five in the morning with, talking about how great they (comics) are, is even greater!

It's true that Russ is a character in my new book but that's all you'll get out of me about him.

RIP Society of the Day: I can't decide who I dislike more: The "who is Paul McCartney" kids or the "I would let Chris Brown beat me" girls.
I say we toss them all into a monster truck arena and let Bigfoot sort them out.
