The story of the Earth in about two minutes.
I suppose...

The story of the Earth in about two minutes.

I suppose it’s human nature to stretch out current events at the expense of historical ones (as I’m sure you know, if you really did squeeze the history of the Earth into two minutes humans would show up at somewhere around 1:59:57).

Also, we don’t really know how much of an impact current events are going to have. If 2013 sees a worldwide outbreak of West Nile virus, killing 100 million people, the events of September 11 are going to seem pretty small in comparison.

Despite my nitpicking, I do like this video. It neatly combines my history nerdiness with my science nerdiness!

Soviet Propaganda

Yes. Yes there is.

There we go.

Say What Now of the Day: This is Father Benedict...

thedailywhat:

Say What Now of the Day: This is Father Benedict Groeschel, a high-profile Catholic priest with the Archdiocese of New York who has a Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University.

This what he had to say about convicted pedophile Jerry Sandusky — whom he believes is the victim in the Penn State scandal, not the perpetrator:

People have this picture in their minds of a person planning to — a psychopath. But that’s not the case. Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster — 14, 16, 18 — is the seducer … It’s not so hard to see — a kid looking for a father and didn’t have his own — and they won’t be planning to get into heavy-duty sex, but almost romantic, embracing, kissing, perhaps sleeping but not having intercourse or anything like that.

It’s an understandable thing … there are the relatively rare cases where a priest is involved in a homosexual way with a minor. I think the statistic I read recently in a secular psychology review was about 2%. Would that be true of other clergy? Would it be true of doctors, lawyers, coaches?

Here’s this poor guy — Sandusky — it went on for years. Interesting: Why didn’t anyone say anything? Apparently, a number of kids knew about it and didn’t break the ice. Well, you know, until recent years, people did not register in their minds that it was a crime. It was a moral failure, scandalous; but they didn’t think of it in terms of legal things.

At this point, (when) any priest, any clergyman, any social worker, any teacher, any responsible person in society would become involved in a single sexual act — not necessarily intercourse — they’re done. And I’m inclined to think, on their first offense, they should not go to jail because their intention was not committing a crime.

Groeschel’s comments have since been removed from the National Catholic Register website.

Basically, he’s saying priests should be allowed a mulligan when it comes to sexually abusing kids. Astonishing.

bluedelliquanti:

This week I’ve been going through my hoard of podcasts and decided to relisten to everything I have that features Andy Daly. Daly is a darn good comedian who excels in performing as outlandish characters in his acts (here’s a good sample of what he does), but his true talent lies in improv. Every character he performs on Comedy Bang Bang goes from a goofy premise to an outlandishly hilarious result that has to be heard to believed. There’s Don Dimelo, a lecherous theatre director, Hot Dog, a waterskiing champion who’s trying out for Sha Na Na, and Chip Gardner, a jolly satanist seeking to be elected as the honorary mayor of Hollywood. Daly’s easily one of the most underrated comedians alive.

Hmm, maybe I should do a podcast portrait series…

Andy Daly episodes are inevitably my favorites of any podcast.

Following a brief hiatus, we’re back in The Lair, discussing: Alex’s cleanly shaven face, Mike’s baby-naming dilemmas, Star Trek IV: The One With The Whales, and the start of an excellent online article, all about the Sexiest Ways to Die. Unfortunately, technical issues get in the way of us…

Hello my fellow wine lovers!

winewithkristen:

Hello my fellow wine lovers!

I am starting a new project with Skillshare in New York City talking about wine in a fun, easy and relatively educational but recreational classroom setting.

My first class is for newbies, but the plan is that if this first one goes well there will be many more to come for wine lovers of all levels.

Popping your cork: tips for new wine drinkers

Have you ever felt intimidated by wine? This class will give you some easy guidelines to look like you know something about wine, even if you don’t.

We will cover topics such as:

Going to a party, what wine should you bring and how much should you spend?
How to properly (and safely) open a bottle of sparkling wine
How to hold a wine glass
Tips to pair your wine and food
And, of course, all the while we will be tasting 3 great wines in class!

After these few nips of knowledge you are destined to look like the coolest wine connoisseur in the room.

September 12, 2012 from 6:15-7:45p.m. at Simple Studios, 134 West 29th Street

So even if you know something about wine, take a chance and come to the class. Tell your friends about it, the only way I can do more classes is if you help me spread the word. Thanks!
