It's interesting that you mention the first chapter is disjointed. I had a hard time writing it, and it showed! I just wanted to get to the action but I had to set the scene. Boring for me = boring for the reader. Ha ha! I'll keep that in mind for my next book, Dust Eaters, coming out this summer.
I'm glad you stuck with it. Carter's demise is my favorite part, too.
