Book Review: The Butterfly Project

The Butterfly Projectby Emma Scott (Goodreads Author) 4.89  ·   Rating Details ·  62 Ratings  ·  66 Reviews"Where you are is home..."

At age fourteen, Zelda Rossi witnessed the unthinkable, and has spent the last ten years hardening her heart against the guilt and grief. She channels her pain into her art: a dystopian graphic novel where vigilantes travel back in time to stop heinous crimes—like child abduction—before they happen. Zelda pitches her graphic novel to several big-time comic book publishers in New York City, only to have her hopes crash and burn. Circumstances leave her stranded in an unfamiliar city, and in an embarrassing moment of weakness, she meets a guarded young man with a past he’d do anything to change...

Beckett Copeland spent two years in prison for armed robbery, and is now struggling to keep his head above water. A bike messenger by day, he speeds around New York City, riding fast and hard but going nowhere, his criminal record holding him back almost as much as the guilt of his crime.

Zelda and Beckett form a grudging alliance of survival, and in between their stubborn clash of wills, they slowly begin to provide each other with the warmth of forgiveness, healing, and maybe even love. But when Zelda and Beckett come face to face with their pasts, they must choose to hold on to the guilt and regret that bind them, or let go and open their hearts for a shot at happiness.

The Butterfly Project is a novel that reveals the power of forgiveness, and how even the smallest decisions of the heart can—like the flutter of a butterfly’s wings—create currents that strengthen into gale winds, altering the course of a life forever.

**The Butterfly Project generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

5+++ "The heart of the story. Her heart." Stars

There's a some magic sprinkled throughout this story. That feeling you get when you a finish an epic love story, you know the one - where your reading heart and soul are filled with inspiration, joy, and a satisfaction that runs so deep you feel the story in your bones. Where a dopey smile plasters itself on your tear-streaked face and your partner says "uh oh, that must of been a good one". Yeah, that feeling. It's woven through every single page of The Butterfly Project. The feeling of hope in the midst of desperation. The feeling of calm in the eye of a storm. The feeling that everything will be right in the world even when it is so very not right. Emma Scott delivers an EPIC romance and she does so with brilliance and an understanding of the good within people that's inspiring.

With the utmost honesty and vulnerability, Emma Scott elevates romance to another level. She does it so well her stories are effortless. She does it by exploiting mistakes then turning them into the greatest strengths. She does it by slowly and precisely ingratiating you to the beautiful friendship her characters form. She does it by building implicit trust and sharing. This book reflects the raw nerves of human's souls aching to let go of their guilt, of their past and be recognized as the counterpoint in another as pure and forgivable, as WORTHY.

This gifted author makes you FEEL every word and every emotion. She makes you addicted to her characters. She makes you feel everything they feel. I read this book in one afternoon from start to finish. I didn't want to put it down. Not because it was so angsty I couldn't. Not because there's some big mystery in the plot I had to know the answer to. I couldn't put it down and didn't want to put it down because the writing was so flawless and the story so real and romantic for me I just simply didn't want to stop basking in the beauty of it. I've highlighted half of this book because everything FEELS so important and so crucial to the development of these two characters. And the worthiness I mentioned above that eventually blooms - my god, it's breathtaking.

Emma Scott feeds your romance reading soul not only with her glorious, evocative writing but these complexly unique characters too. Beckett Copeland shines as the one of the most unique NA heroes ever. Thoughtful, kind, and passionate yet trapped in a self-sabotaging train of misguided thoughts not allowing him to heal. He's a product of his own bad decision. That's what I love about him. He holds blame for a single choice like it's the weight of the world on his shoulders. He doesn't make excuses. His blunt honesty and openness despite his attempt at being concealed proves one of greatest character strengths - his willingness to share, his need for it. His deep level of passion for Zelda and how she makes him feel is hands down one the best feeling you get from the book. He supports her, cherishes her, and respects her as his very best friend. Beckett contests that this is Zelda's story because he doesn't feel he deserves any kind of happiness or hold interest in saving himself but for her, well Beckett, he'd do anything. He's an open book and he's a protector. I fell so deeply for Beckett even when he wasn't feeling for himself.

When Beckett meets the girl - Zelda Rossi has a dream she's willing to fight for despite being trapped in her own loneliness and guilt. With a tragic circumstance shaping her whole life she's on a plan to avenge her own young self. I loved her willingness to understand Beckett, to support him without judgment. She's fierce this girl although she doesn't realize it. She's unique. A wallflower type girl with the biggest heart that feels everything from her past weighing down on her life but despite it making it a priority to live and feel even when she doesn't realize she's doing it. She craves safety and love. She creates sunshine in peoples lives without ever realizing her own glow and capacity to shine. Zelda is my favorite kind of heroine. She doesn't make excuses, she carries a weight too she wants to keep concealed. But she never backs down. And the good she sees and is willing to accept from people is startling. I loved her so much; her attitude, her vulnerability, and her heart.

Meeting Beckett starts a trajectory of change in Zelda's life she never saw coming. Neither of them saw coming. The two together battle demons in a way that's so fulfilling and so romantic. Through friendship and trust they build the dream. The way Emma Scott weaves their gifts for art into the story resonates so much. Through the depictions of graphic novels and the construction of the craft we learn so much more and get a deeper look into their hearts. Scott unravels this story within a story in the most unique way. I loved the artistry and the interesting world she creates because of it.

The Butterfly Project proved to be an EPIC read for me. I couldn't stop thinking about it when I finished. I read the last 25% over again immediately. The beautiful prose and brilliant structure of the story, the unique character development and histories all perfectly executed to create a truly romantic, addicting story. It's vengeance of your own past self. It's reflection and understanding one's own strengths and weaknesses. It's friendship and kindness. It's an exploration of the human condition after tragedy, whether that tragedy was by choice or not, to heal, reflect, and strive for innate goodness. It's love and redemption. It's divine forgiveness and inner turmoil. The Butterfly Project embodies HEART and so much SOUL highlighting the best of all of us; it's a heady feeling when you finish this book. I highly recommend this story to everyone. It's a beautiful, unforgettable reading experience I'll cherish forever. Without question, one of my favorites of 2017.

She heard his voice before she saw him.

Had she known the ultimate cost of that simple glance heavenward, maybe she wouldn’t have stopped. Maybe she would have just kept on walking with her head down. But fate held no warnings for Laire Maiden Cornish.

Shielding her eyes, she looked up at a deck wrapped around the second floor of the mansion, waiting a moment for her eyes to adjust as he came into view.

There, in the glittering sunlight . . . a boy.

No, a man.

A young man, a little older than she, tall and muscular, with jet-black hair and a square jaw, dark brown eyes, and a deep tan. He wore a robin’s-egg blue bathing suit with Kelly green palm fronds in a small repeat and a pair of sunglasses buried in his thick hair. In one hand, he held a phone up to his ear, and in the other, he slowly swirled a glass filled with ice and clear liquid. He stared out at the sound, concentrating on his call.

“Hey!” he yelled. “Can you hear me now?” He huffed with annoyance, pulling the phone away from his ear and squinting at it before trying again. “Pete? It’s Erik. Can you hear me?” He set the glass down on the balcony’s wooden railing and gave his phone his full attention. Staring down at it, he muttered, “Shit. No reception.”

It’s Erik.

Erik.

His name is Erik.

Feeling a sharp burn in her lungs, Laire realized she’d been holding her breath and sucked in a huge gulp of air as she stared up at him, frozen in the moment, utterly mesmerized.

She had never seen a more perfect, more handsome person in her entire life.

The sun glinted off his dark hair and wrapped his body in gold, making him appear godlike so very far above her. Were she the type to swoon, Laire imagined she would have been a puddle of goopy longing on the ground below him, content to sacrifice her pride for a glimpse at his beauty.

 *** EXCERPT***

Technically, I didn't drop my drawers the first time I saw her again. Just my balls. The ones in my hands. Juggling balls. Here’s how it went down. Picture a Sunday morning in Central Park. A perfect summer day. The grass was green, the breeze was warm, and I’d just spent the last few hours getting acquainted with turtles and frogs at the children’s zoo because I’m an awesome uncle. And Carly’s one cool seven-year-old.The kid loves all creatures, but especially the ones that jump and crawl, so I took her to the enchanted forest part of the zoo. When we finished, she tugged on my shirt sleeve, batted her hazel eyes, and asked ever so sweetly for an ice cream cone.Like I stood a chance at resisting her. C’mon. She’s my cousin’s kid, and clearly she gets her charm from our side of the family. With her hand in mine, we strolled across the grass near the running path, hunting for the nearest ice cream dealer. And then Carly did that thing little kids do.She shrieked for what seemed like absolutely no reason. Next, she pointed to an impossibly tall dude wearing a beret while juggling two Rubik’s Cubes, two orange balls, and a small green beanbag.“He can do five, Uncle Tyler!” Carly shouted, her eyes going wide.“Five isn’t too shabby,” I said with a shrug. She turned to me with a questioning stare. “I’ve never seen you do five.”“That’s because I haven’t shown you all my tricks yet.”“Can you really juggle five balls?”I scoffed. “Please, I can do that with my eyes closed.”I didn’t put myself through law school juggling for nothing.Just kidding. You can’t put yourself through law school juggling anything but insane class schedules and lack of sleep.Carly arched an eyebrow. So did the juggler, as he kept up the cascade of his quintet. Show-off.“I want to see. Show me,” Carly urged.Yeah, Carly’s a chip off the old block. She’s all about challenging me, and I’m all about rising to the challenge. The stick-thin guy with the beret raised his chin. “Have at it, man.”With clockwork precision, he let the balls fall out of orbit and into his palm. Next, the Rubik’s Cubes. Then the beanbag. He stepped closer, handed me the objects, and flashed a crooked, put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is grin.Game on.Packs of runners jogged along, cyclists wheeled over the black asphalt, and rollerbladers whizzed by on the concrete. With my feet parked hip’s width apart, I stood at the edge of the grass getting a feel for the items, weighing them, and then one, two, three, four, five, I whisked each one up into the air in a high oval arc. Round and round, in a perfect five-ball cascade.Carly clapped, then demanded more. “Yes, now close your eyes!”I groaned. What was I thinking? Juggling with eyes closed is fucking hard. But I could pull it off for a couple seconds. My special skill. I obliged my niece’s request, pulling off a few quick blind ovals. Five seconds later, after I’d shown off that particular party trick, I opened my eyes. And I saw a vision from my past.A blond beauty, with long legs, a lovely round ass, and a high ponytail swishing back and forth across her shoulders. She ran along the path in tiny orange let-me-peel-them-off-with-my-teeth-pretty-please running shorts. And that face. Dear Lord, the stunning face of an angel. High cheekbones. Deep brown eyes that saw me like no one ever had. Those red lips, shaped like a bow. Fuck me, the things she could do with those lips. The things I taught her to do with that sinful mouth.Delaney sure as hell knew how to use it, and I don’t just mean in the bedroom. We used to talk about anything and everything when we were together in college. Days with her. Nights with her. Best time of my life. That woman was full of spark. Full of fire. So damn passionate. And look at her now.Jesus Christ. It had to be illegal to be that smoking hot. ✮✮✮ Celebrate the release of The HOT ONE! Interview with Author Summer Lane

How does it feel to publish the 9th installment of the Collapse Series – and your 16th overall?

It feels unreal! When I was a kid, I always pictured myself as an author, sharing my stories with readers, but I admit I didn’t really think that would materialize until I was much older than I am right now. I’ve been really blessed – and I’ve worked really hard! What’s a typical day in your life like?

I do manage a business, so while I do a lot more than simply write manuscripts, writing certainly is the base of everything that I engage in. I just got a German Shepherd puppy named Kona, and she gets me up early in the morning (earlier than usual, haha!), and I’ll start work then. If I have a good day, I’ll be done with work around 2:30 or 3. If it’s a long day, I’ll be working until 6.What is State of Hope going to be like – and is it the last book in the series?

State of Hope is going to be long, intense and flushed with adrenaline. There are so many secrets to be revealed, so many character plots to be tied up neatly, and most importantly: Cassidy’s conclusion in this apocalyptic war. While Hope is indeed the final installment in the Collapse Series, it is not the last book in the Collapse universe. I certainly do have some plans for Cassidy in the future – they may not be as huge as Collapse, but trust me: I have plans. How do you stay motivated and healthy in your career as a writer?

I stay motivated by keeping my eye on the prize: I remove negativity from my life, because nobody needs that. I try to surround myself with people who really care about me and support what I do. Staying healthy, for me, at least, is actually really difficult. My profession requires a lot of sitting, so I have to make an extra effort to get up, walk and move. It’s also tempting to snack on junk food working in an office (am I right?). I try hard to indulge only with healthy snacks: I have celery sticks and apples in the fridge, I like cheese, and any gluten-free cracker in combination. I also just discovered baked parmesan crisps. Oh, my heart!Advice to aspiring authors?

Don’t let anybody bring you down. Never take no as a final answer. Work hard, and it will pay off, one way or another.

Author Bio:
Summer Lane is the #1 bestselling author of the Collapse Series, Zero Trilogy, Bravo Saga, Collapse: The Illustrated Guide and the adventure thriller, Unbreakable SEAL.
Summer owns WB Publishing. She is an accomplished journalist and creative writing teacher. She also owns an online magazine, Writing Belle, where she has interviewed and worked with countless authors from around the globe.
Summer lives in the Central Valley of California with her husband, where she enjoys reading, collecting tea, visiting the beach and the mountains, and counting down the days until she has her very own puppy (if you’ve read Bravo: Apocalypse Mission, you’ll understand).

Book Review: Preston's Honor

Preston's Honorby Mia Sheridan (Goodreads Author) 4.36  ·   Rating Details ·  724 Ratings  ·  227 ReviewsThere were two brothers—identical twins—and though I loved them both, my soul belonged to only one.

Annalia Del Valle has loved Preston Sawyer all her life. The daughter of an impoverished migrant farmworker, she grew up as an outcast in what was no more than a tiny, cooped up shack in California’s Central Valley. But her heart found freedom in the land, in the wide-open spaces of Sawyer Farm, and in the boys who were her only friends.

Preston has yearned for Annalia since he was a boy. But a sense of honor kept him from pursuing her until he’s unable to hold back any longer and their worlds—and bodies—collide one hot summer night. A night that sets off a chain of events that will alter their lives forever.

Now Annalia is back in town after disappearing without a trace for six long months. Determined to reclaim her heart, her life, and the baby she left behind—the son who was created in a moment of lust and love and pent-up yearning.

Preston has survived grief, a ravaging drought, and the despair of heartache, but he’s not sure he can survive Annalia again. And he might be unwilling to try. Will pride and bitterness keep him from the one thing he’s always longed for?

How do you heal what is irreparably broken? How do you forgive that which is unforgivable? How do you discover that real honor comes not from circumstance, but from the place deep in our hearts where truth resides? And how do you move beyond the wounds of the past to discover that some loves are as solid as the ground beneath your feet, and as enduring as the earth itself?

THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY GEMINI. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

"Like breaking through the clouds." Stars

Mia Sheridan never fails in delivering a soulful story. Her writing is elegant and concise allowing readers to fully immerse themselves into her worlds. Her characters charm and coerce readers into the plots of her books unwilling to let go until the end. Preston's Honor brings a new and interesting twist to my personal Sheridan catalog and the uniqueness of this story compared to others of this authors catapulted it to the top. With a clear, crisp, and socially conscientious message Mia Sheridan created a world in California's Central Valley for her characters alluring readers.

Told from the dual points of view of both hero and heroine, Preston and Annalia, this book takes you on an angsty, emotional, and wrenching journey of two people destined for great togetherness but saddled with uncertainty, guilt, and forces beyond their control wreaking havoc on their emotions. There's always something so pure in the charm of Sheridan's characters. A foundation of compassion, innate awareness, and love leads to a rightness for readers. With the introspective way she unravels the lives of these two you feel a deep understanding of who each of them are inside and out. Faced with the impossible how they choose to rise will leave you breathless.

Preston Sawyer represents an anomaly. The honor in the title of this book Preston wears as a badge of courage and fear. His sense of right and wrong, his moral code coupled with his love make him a boy and a man you want in your own life. Preston doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve but it's big, bold, and bursting with pride for his loved ones. Annalia Del Valle on the other hand carries her heart on her sleeve. The deepness for which she feels for those around her whether the circumstances dire or fortunate runs her ragged. She internalizes and compounds on her profound feelings of love. Both of these characters are vulnerable and a bit naive. They make mistakes and own them; they make mistakes and fight to remedy them. Forgiveness, acceptance and an immense need to be wanted wholly drive her. The two of them have a lot of learning to do and it was beautiful to watch them each grow within the pages of this book.

Mia Sheridan's prologue for Preston's Honor strikes fast illuminating your reading mind for what's to come. It's a great hook. Her wondrous writing gift and beautiful story telling perfectly showcased. From that hook she travels back in time leading readers from past to present and giving a full and well rounded experience on the lives of these characters. How their shaped as children provides such insight to how they become the young adults they are. This brilliantly structured story will make you cry in places, make you swoon in others. It sheds new light on social issues and understanding. Most of all for me, it'll help elevate your empathy and compassion creating an understanding. It's openness and so much love. I loved the writing and they way she chose to tell this story. I felt deeply, I adored this story, devoured it and will always remember these characters.

Now LIVE!

5+ "More than you could imagine..." Stars

Going into this book I held no preconceived notions about what to expect. After the short blurb the story sparked my interest. What I received in return is nothing short of a magnificent reading experience. My words will pale in comparison to what I believe this story should receive in acclaim but I hope to give you a reason to read this book. The wonderful richness of the writing, the enormous depth and excellently structured development of the story telling created a perfectly emotional and luminous reading environment. This tumultuously beautiful story of growing, learning, trust, and choice will grab you from the very first sentence, the pull so strong you will hold on tight until the end. It's contemporary fiction with romance and so, so, so much more.

Laura Spinella spun this honest, raw, and telling tale chronicling a woman who's life revolves around the choices she's made at a precarious time in her life. It's a story of how those choices effect her daily life years later. A continual journey of those choices compounding her decisions, her mind, and her emotions in her present and future. Her experiences, both those she's chose and those thrust upon her by others, shapes who this heroine is in her adult life and provide the catalyst for this story. There's a common thread woven through the story that builds the enigmatic, engaging plot. This common thread pulls taut the many bands of the story throughout the entire journey.

We see this story from the first person point of view of the heroine and the sprinkling of third person points of views from two key people in her journey. Snippets of her past told through vivid reflections give us so much insight. I loved the relationships in this story. It's truly a book of vivid characters. A study in development characters for your readers and driving the focus forward because of this interesting people. Friendships, a marriage, ill-fated relationships and introspective personal relationships provide layers and layers of story you can sink into. You'll identify with each character in some way. You'll find yourself thinking about the choices you've made and how they affect you now. You'll think about your marriage, if you're in one, and how your choices affect your partner. An insightful look into the windows of your life. It's a beautiful thing to me when an author finds their way into your own life and your own reflections.

And this story was very real-life for me. It's provocative and seductive, melancholy, and nurturing in it's tone. It's about growth and self-worth, recognizing your best qualities as others see them and fostering the tremendous giving impact of meaningful relationships. This isn't an easy story - there are characters for whom will provide you a thundering array of feelings. Each of them you'll love and loathe, celebrate and damn them. Some characters you'll root for the entire time. Rest assured each one evokes a maelstrom of complex feelings as deep as the characters feel. Each one you'll find the compassion you crave through this fierce story.

Human relationships prove to be hard. Every single day they take work and perseverance. The complexities of individuals and how we fit with others built upon the foundations we're from in our childhoods, it's a recipe for complicated adults with even more complicated lives, feelings, and relationships. Laura Spinella unraveled all of that so perfectly for me. She took me places I anticipated by twisting how I though we'd get there. She so eloquently took me places I never thought as well. Turning perceptions upside down and her characters inside out. And her writing, gosh her writing, it hit every note brilliantly. And the strong, distinct choices this author made to tell this story worked in a big, bold, and wonderful way.

Unstrung is a slow burning mosaic of emotion and grandeur. It's a completely satisfying stand alone book. I'm so grateful and elated to have read this story and now to have been introduced to this authors beautiful writing. I highly recommend it to readers who love complexity in their stories and more importantly their characters, a slow burn, a momentous onslaught of emotions wrapped into a story of growth, loss, bravery, and deep enduring love.

Book Review: Ripple Effect

Ripple Effect: Episode 1 (Ripple Effect #1)by Keri Lake (Goodreads Author) 4.56  ·   Rating Details ·  55 Ratings  ·  57 ReviewsRipley

They call me RIP.
I’m a killer. A murderer. A psychopath.
In the eyes of the righteous, I’m a monster, born of sin and depravity.
I want to protect her, but I’m not a good man.
I want to love her, but I no longer feel.
She gets under my skin, though, and has awakened something inside of me.
Something I’d kill for.
I’m not her savior—not even close. In fact, I’m worse than the hell she’s already suffered.
I’m her vengeance. Tit for tat, as they say.
And if she’s not careful, I’ll be her ruin.

Dylan

For months, I’ve watched him.
I’ve fantasized him as my savior, my lover. My ticket out of the hell I’ve lived in for the last six years.
I never dreamed he’d be my nightmare.
Had I known what he really is, I’d have never gotten in the car that night, but life is full of cause and effect.
And sometimes the choice on offer isn’t a choice at all.
It’s the result of something already in motion, and we’re merely left to survive the ripple effect.

*This is an erotic suspense/erotic romance not recommended for readers under the age of 18 due to graphic violence and sex.

**Ripple Effect: Episode 1 generously provided in exchange for an honest review.**

"Go on and take your piece." Stars

Keri Lake does dark and dangerous so very well. Ripple Effect: Episode One kicks off an episodic series of books by laying the foundation for what seems is going to be an epic, dark tale of love and destruction. In Episode One we meet our main characters, we learn a little of their desperately unfortunate pasts and present lives. We see how they meet and what they're going through, a tiny glimpse of who they are and why and what it takes for them to survive. I felt invested in the story in and in these characters as individuals. However, for a romance you don't get that so much here. There's the hint of a connection individually but not anything concrete to understand yet. And while I can tell in future books there's going to be an awesome edge to their romance you don't get that so much in this first episode. As usual though, Lake's writing hooks you naturally without forcing the characters onto you and she always takes you to the deepest recesses of her characters dark minds without apology. I'm looking forward on where she takes us on this Ripple Effectepisodic journey moving forward.
