Book Review: Monster Prick
Monster Prick (Screwed #1.5)
by Kendall Ryan
Over my dead body.
That's what I told Gracie when she informed me of her plan to pick some random guy she met online to get rid of her pesky virginity.
If anyone is touching her, it's going to be me.
I shouldn't even be considering it, but I can't get it out of my head: her, under me, begging me.
***
Arrogant. Cocky. Prick.
Those are the words I’d use to describe my older brother’s dangerously handsome best friend.
When he learned of my plan to kick off my white cotton briefs, ditching my good girl persona once and for all by losing my virginity to the first eligible bachelor I could find, he flipped out. Said over his dead body.
He says if anyone’s going to do it, it’s going to be him.
I hate that I’m even considering his offer.
But I am … I sooo am.
Ever since he suggested it, all I can think about is his cocky smile on those full lips as he’s driving in to me.
But if we cross that line … will I ever be able to go back?
MONSTER PRICK is a spin off novella from SCREWED, but can be read as a standalone, as it features a new couple.
TeriLyn's thoughts: As a big fan of Screwed I was excited about this stand alone, spin off novella. It's super short told from both points of view of Hudson and Gracie, hero and heroine. Gracie's a 22 year old virgin looking to cash in the v-card while Hudson is the best friend of her older brother willing to help rid her of her dreaded sexual status. Cliches, dirty talk, and inevitable feelings ensue. Honestly, being a novella the story will work for some as it's long time friends turn lovers/best friend-forbidden younger sister trope. For me it was too fast and furious with some trite dialogue and inner thoughts. Hudson was hot though and Gracie was cute. The epilogue of this was also quite sweet. Just an OK read for me.

Book Review: Corrupt
Corrupt
by Penelope Douglas
Erika
I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.
His name is Michael Crist.
My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He is handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.
But I noticed him.
I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.
Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.
Because he’s finally noticed me.
Michael
Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.
My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.
Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.
In my city.
Unprotected.
The opportunity is too good to be true as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out.
We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.
***Corrupt is a stand-alone dark romance with no cliffy
TeriLyn's thoughts: Ok. So. Corrupt. I kinda, sorta freaking really dug it. There were several times when I thought to myself - "TL, really?! You love this?!" - but I did. It was an interesting plot. It was a something different. The author hooked me from the very beginning. And I have the biggest crush on Michael Crist, the hero or um, anti-hero, of the story. The last couple chapters of the book were absolute perfection for me. I re-read them twice just to re-live them a bit before moving on. Erika Fane, the heroine, impressed me. She was quite intriguing and had qualities I really like in a heroine the biggest being she goes for what she wants in a big way. This book is all about games, manipulations, and at some points down right cruelty. The hero isn't the swoony, love-you-forever without some seriously selfish issues type hero. But me being me and liking the asshole, self-destructive, vindictive ones yet who still love fiercely type - yeah, totally dug him.
Why not five stars when I loved it? There's some major "mystery" in the story and I had it pegged early on. Predictability didn't deter me from reading but it kept the story from reaching an epic level. In addition, the "dark" parts of the story weren't all that dark. The effects of bullying, superiority, and a wonderment of where these characters are taking you inspire the feelings from the reader but the book never took me out of my comfort zone at all. If you're a lover of the dark and twisty this is mild, in my opinion. Fear is the kink and it's well done indeed but it's nothing too shocking.
With that said that, this book is most definitely worth reading. The author writes in first person from the points of view of both Michael and Erika toggling the reader between present and past. All the characters enhance the story and the plot keeps you captivated. I saw some great reviews for this from fellow GR readers and I'm so glad I spent the time in Penelope Douglas Corrupt world.

Book Review: Welcome to Forever
Welcome to Forever (Hero's Welcome #1)
by Annie Rains
In Seaside, North Carolina, there are two kinds of people: Marines, and kids of Marines. Then there’s Kat Chandler. Recently hired as the principal of Seaside Elementary, Kat makes it her mission to turn the school into a place of peace and calm. That’s not going to be easy with hard-liner parents like Micah Peterson storming in, telling her how to do her job—and then kissing her with those gorgeous lips of his and turning her brain into mush.
As a Marine Sergeant and a single dad, Micah Peterson has just two priorities: doing his job better than anyone else, and getting the absolute best for his son, Ben. But when he meets Ben’s beautiful new principal, a different yearning shifts into focus. He wants her, sure, but he’s also moved by the connection Kat forges with her students. So after learning that she refuses to date Marines, Micah sets two more objectives: convincing Kat to give him a chance . . . and then holding on to her forever.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Welcome to Forever generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**
Welcome to Forever intrigued me from the blurb. I love a good military romance. Unfortunately for me the story fell a bit flat in terms of plot and even the characters. The writing was bland and I had a hard time connecting to the story. Micah and Kat, hero and heroine, are both grasping for friendship but find themselves intrigued with the possibility for more. Through wholesome, respectable values they find themselves enamored with one another which pushes boundaries and breaks personal rules for them both. It just never added up to enough for me to feel really moved by their story. The angst level is very low provided mostly by inner monologues. The shining light of the story for me was Ben, Micah's son. There was good message in that particular message of the story that I felt was compelling. Ben gave good reminders to the readers and also showed me a sweeter side of the life both Micah and Kat want. His presence in the book enhanced the story for me. Other issues and conflict in the book I wish the author would have dug deeper and gave me more. Some parts I felt I was given just bare bones. Another good thing about the story, for me, was I definitely wanted to see where it ended so I stuck it out. The ending turnout out to be sweet. Lovers of military, second-chance, with a great child character will enjoy this story.

Book Review: My Soul to Keep
My Soul to Keep (Soul #1)
by Kennedy Ryan
It seems the things worth keeping are often the hardest to hold...
KAI
I had two things in life that mattered. My mother and my music.
Mama was taken from me too soon, and now music is all I have left. It’s the thing that’s pushed me right out of backwoods Georgia into Los Angeles, where the line between fantasy and reality shimmers and blurs. I’m finally making my way, making my mark. I can’t afford to fall for one of music's brightest stars. Not now. Music is all I have left, and I’m holding on tight with both hands. I won’t let go, not even for Rhyson Gray.
RHYSON
I had one thing in my life that mattered – music. The only constant, it’s taken me to heights most people only dream about; a gift dropped in my lap at birth. I thought it was enough. I thought it was everything until I met Kai. Now she’s all I think about, like a song I can't get out of my head. If I have to chase her, if I have to give up everything - I will. And once she's mine, I won't let go.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **My Soul to Keep generously provided in exchange for an honest review.**
As a fan of Kennedy Ryan’s previous Bennett series I was really excited to learn she had something new and self-published releasing soon. For me, as an already established fan, she elevated her story-telling game tenfold. 100-fold, if you will. She hit all my favorite romance story buttons creating a unbreakable connection to these characters - so strong I couldn’t stop reading. Friends-to-romance, angst-ridden, music industry culture, independent heroine, eccentric hero – this book has it all and is brilliantly pieced together providing an extraordinary reading experience. To say I’m excited about this book would be an understatement. I hope you’ll all read this new contemporary romance as My Soul to Keep definitely lands on my TOP 5 “Books of 2015” list.
My expectations for this book, well honestly I didn’t know what to expect. I thought I was going to be reading about two music students trying to make it big in the industry. I was so very wrong. And what I actually received from this story completely blew me away. As always, to preserve the plot and allow a reader to really feel and understand these characters for yourself, I give nothing away and instead will try and convey how I felt while reading. The main characters are truly the feature of this story for me, as they should be, however the secondary characters really play well into the overall tone of their lives at the present time. Who Rhyson and Kai are and where they came from is fully represented by the secondary characters – whether they be likable characters or not.
From the very first, poignantly real, and moving chapter I was hooked on the story of Kai Pearson and Rhyson Gray. Through alternating first person points of view, Kennedy Ryan digs deep into the souls of both characters. She eloquently exposes their deepest vulnerabilities through the up-front, immediate honesty they both share with only each other. The trust and connection they feel from the minute they meet drives their relationship as well their connection to the reader. With a beautifully constructed “slow-build” where they transition to the best of friends while fighting an attraction to each other to the epic romance you feel forthcoming, so many moments between these two stand out in my reading heart as I reflect on the book. Kennedy Ryan moved the plot by being totally main character-centric, the focus constantly on them even as outside forces sweep in to disrupt them.
I just can’t express enough my love for both Rhyson and Kai. So polarizing their connection to each other, so perfectly structured their “moments” thanks to the great story telling of Ryan. She easily builds up the angst and carefully moves beyond it before arc’ing again. I understood their plights, empathized with their feelings, and thought each of them so pure in their honesty to each other that this nagging feeling of self-destruction kept looming. The results of that are fantastic. Something about the two of them together and as individuals resonated so completely with me throughout the book. Maybe each of their fierce ambition, the way they couldn’t resist each other even though they should, the way they rocked each other’s worlds at first sight or rather, first note. The feral temptation hidden beneath an immediate trust. Maybe the very real, human qualities in them to realize their mistakes and move forward, their honesty and compassion for another.
Kennedy Ryan wrote a brilliant story. Connecting all the elements of her love story to my reading soul with characters for whom I want to spend more time. Her writing here is crisp, fluid, and cohesively masters the plot and the souls of her characters. Her enticing word choices and the descriptions she uses to drive home their connection and their feelings so vivid easily creating moving pictures in your mind as you read her words. It weaves together so many great romance elements while giving you a story with depth and emotion. I was a Kennedy Ryan fan before, I’m a SUPER fan now. Rhyson Gray and Kai Pearson catapulted My Soul to Keep to my Top 5 list and that’s in no small way thanks to the excellent story telling of Kennedy Ryan. I’m so excited about this book and where this author plans to take us. I’m urging to you to read it!

Book Review: Some Sort of Crazy
Some Sort of Crazy (Happy Crazy Love #2)
by Melanie Harlow
When a psychic tells Natalie Nixon her life is about to be upended by a mysterious stranger, she laughs it off. After all, she has everything she’s ever wanted—a successful bakery, a the perfect boyfriend, and the keys to her dream house.
Who could possibly make her want to throw all that away?
Then Miles Haas comes back to town.
But he’s no stranger—they’ve known each other since high school. Plus, he’s only around for the summer, he’s still a shameless playboy, and he makes a living writing articles for a men’s magazine with titles like 'Should You Bang the Boss’s Daughter? A Flowchart' and 'Butt Stuff for Beginners: A Field Guide.'
He’s not the man of her dreams, and she’s not about to abandon everything she’s worked so hard for just for a little fun. Except he makes her laugh like no one else, smells like heaven, and looks sexy as hell in those panty-melting glasses.
**SOME SORT OF CRAZY is a full-length standalone romance.**
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Some Sort of Crazy generously provided in exchange for an honest review.**
I really adored the story of Miles and Natalie. There's a very inherently becoming quality to Harlow's writing. She makes reading and becoming invested in her stories quite effortless. Some Sort of Crazy marks my second Harlow book and concurrently my second great experience with her stories.
Her presentation of the characters in this book I found quite unique and interesting. This author has a luring way to garner the most interest in her characters. Miles Haas, our hero, stole the show for me. Naturally carefree and jovial his impact on Natalie's life is substantial. His impact on the reader is equally enthralling. He's quirky and open and sexually magnetic. Natalie Nixon, our reserved, goal-oriented, and content heroine needs a good dose of Miles type adventure in her life. And boy does she get it, ten fold. When she comes out her shell with Miles and shows she's equally open and passionate as him was most entertaining to read.
Their story, in particular Natalie's with regard to current love life, started off a little rocky for me. Without the very tempting and elegant writing of Harlow this could have went a different way for me definitely. I'm so glad she possesses such a gift to keep a reader hooked even when the heroine's actions are not your favorite. From the time Miles and Natalie relationship blossoms the book held me captive.
Secondary characters we met in Some Sort of Happy return here and make the story that much more excellent. Sebastian and Skylar make several appearances for readers who start the series with the first book. While each can be read as a stand alone, I'd implore readers to read book one first as it's an epic love story. And of course, the love story between Miles and Natalie in this book told from both their points of view more than satisfies.
I'm quite glad I've picked up this author's works. Some Sort of Crazy reminds us to have fun in our love lives, to let go with someone we feel the most comfortable with, and to remember when we're pushed out of comfort zone how rewarding it is to let that person into our souls the way we haven't with anyone else. I look forward to discovering more Melanie Harlow stories in the future.

Excerpt:
After another hour of dancing and another trip to the bar, I asked Evie, “Are you ready to go soon? It’s getting late and my feet are killing me.” “Let’s head back out one more time. I feel like this time on the dance floor will bring me the man I’m looking for.” Evie gave me a sad puppy dog look and began pulling me back to the floor. I could feel my buzz fading, revealing the exhaustion I felt down to my bones, but I was here for Evie and her quest. So I obediently followed her back to the dance floor. About ten minutes into dancing, a ridiculously hot guy came up to dance with Evie. He whispered in her ear and she made a drinking motion to me. I gave her a thumbs up and she was off with a quick glance back, mouthing, “Fuck yeah.” I was about to head to the bar as well to get a drink when one of my favorite dancing songs came on. I fell into a rhythm, finding my zone. I hoped I looked like a high-class stripper, but I didn’t care too much because I was feeling the music, feeling powerful, sexy. I made a sultry turn and opened my eyes, immediately finding Mr. Sex Eyes. I paused for a minute in shock until he raised an eyebrow as if he was asking, What are you waiting for? The powerful rush of sexiness heightened, adding to my excitement causing a tightness in my chest and a lightheaded feeling. I closed my eyes and began to dance. I no longer danced just for myself, I could tell. I could feel his eyes on me caressing my skin, or at least I imagined they were. Let’s be honest, he could have moved away while my eyes were closed, but I liked the illusion that I was dancing for someone. That they were watching me. Hmm, maybe I had a bit of an exhibitionist streak in me. One song turned into two and two into three. I never looked back over for fear that he would be gone. I didn’t want to lose this feeling. My breathing came fast, not only from the dancing, but from the excitement. I could feel myself getting turned on, experiencing a rush I didn’t ever want to end. I swayed my hips low and rose back up when a large hand softly squeezed my waist as another pushed my hair over my right shoulder. “I almost didn’t come over because you looked like you were enjoying yourself so much, but after such a show, how could I resist?” His deep voice vibrated through me, so close I could feel his lips brush against my ear. I wasn’t going to look, but a part of me had to check if it was him and not some random man coming up to me. I slowed down a bit and turned my head, looking at him out of the corner of my eye. Hot damn, up close he was even better than expected. The darkness made it hard to confirm but I thought his eyes were blue. His lips had that same smirk as earlier. “By all means, don’t let me stop you. I just want to participate now.” He placed his other hand on my hip and pulled me back so I was right up against him. Instantly I could feel how much he enjoyed my show. I couldn’t help myself, I leaned back and subtly rubbed myself against him. I wasn’t sure what I was trying to communicate with that move, but I became unstoppable at that point. “Come on, let’s play. Dance for me, beautiful.”

Author Bio: I never thought I would ever write a book. I wasn't even really a reader until age twenty. But I picked up a romance novel and that was it for me. I fell in love. And then one day I stepped into this indie world of books and I started writing. Then I wrote enough to keep going. And then I had a book. Sometimes things happen when you least expect it, but it all falls into place. Writing is it for me.
I'm a stay at home mom with a degree in chemistry and biology. I LOVE science. If you get me started talking about biochemistry, it's all over. I'll rattle on for days! But I use all that knowledge to take care of my two little girls. Mostly while my husband is away being a soldier.
It's taken me a long time to get here, but I like it ... And I think I might stay a while.
