Book Review: Paper Magician

The Paper Magician (The Paper Magician Trilogy #1)
by Charlie N. Holmberg

Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.

Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.

An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.

From the imaginative mind of debut author Charlie N. Holmberg, The Paper Magician is an extraordinary adventure both dark and whimsical that will delight readers of all ages.
Lori's thoughts: I enjoy the way Charlie N. Holmberg crafts a story. The way she weaves words and creates a world so vivid I can mentally image it while reading. I've read two of her books to date, and while enjoying this one immensely, it is not the favorite. I have The Glass Magician on my Kindle and will read that one next because I bought the trio all at once and am anxious to see what happens next for Ceony.

The only "historical" thing I could see with this book is the fact that it was set in the 1800's. I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction, so that didn't bother me in the least. I was more interested in the story and the magical world than I was the time period the book was set in.

re-teaser4 Get a sneak peek at the first chapter!Secrets.

They had the ability to destroy lives, obliterate relationships and sabotage even the strongest partnerships. Big or small…it didn’t matter. Even the tiniest white lie had the power to corrode—to shatter and dismantle everything you loved.

I’d carried a secret so big, for so long that sometimes I felt physically weak from its weight. I had thought I could carry its burden to my grave—that eventually its truth would die along with me.

But secrets never die.

They live on far longer than we do, and they always find their way to the surface.

Mine certainly did.

Sitting alone in the apartment I shared with my fiancé, I gently rolled the smooth green stone between my thumb and forefinger, over and over, remembering the day it was returned to me.

In all our years together, I’d never seen August so cold. So lifeless.

It frightened me to my core.

But I still hadn’t told anyone. It had been three days and I had yet to tell my fiancé or best friend about the events that had taken place in that bridal shop. As far as Ryan and Sarah knew, August had rudely interrupted my bridal appointment to tell me he had his memories back—that was all.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Why hadn’t I elaborated? I didn’t want to admit my shame. I couldn’t share this secret, my darkest lie. What would they think of me? I was the reason August had been in that hospital bed for two years. And the worst part? I’d lied about it—to everyone.

Perfect downtown apartment.

Perfect job as a fashion designer.

All of her dreams were coming true with the world at her fingertips.

That was until Ryder Montgomery appeared in her life. A chain of events lands Ava in the middle of his family's Montana cattle ranch where she not only finds love, but a mysterious connection to Ryder’s sister when she stumbles upon her diary.

Broken Love is book 4 in the Broken series.

Broken LovesmallWrapping her arm with mine, my mother and I headed through the house and to the back. “Now, Ava, try to keep your very outspoken thoughts to yourself.”
My mouth fell open as I let out a gasp. “Oh my God. What do you think I’m going to do? Offend the little old consultant men, and then they won’t want to work for us?”
“Yes. That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”
Liza bumped my shoulder as she rushed past me. “Don’t worry, Court, when she sees them she’ll be too busy wiping the drool from her mouth to even talk.”
I rolled my eyes and took off after Liza as she yelped and ran through the kitchen with me hot on her trail.
“This is not the first impression I’m talking about, Ava Moore!” my mother called out as I followed Liza out onto the back porch. Liza immediately took a right turn and I didn’t realize how fast I was going. Trying to come to a stop, I hit the stairs and ran down them only to run right into the back of someone, causing their drink to go everywhere.
“Shit!” I shouted as my head throbbed from slamming into what felt like a brick wall. As I put my fingers up to my temple and closed my eyes, I prayed the hangover would just go away.
“Ava?”
I know that voice.
Peeking one eye open, the other one quickly followed as I gasped and said, “Ryder?”
I quickly scanned around only to find everyone staring at both of us, and I couldn’t help but notice the stunned expression on my father’s face. “You know my daughter, Ryder?”
The smile that spread across Ryder’s face spoke volumes.
“Yes, sir, I do.”
I could feel all eyes on me as I let out a nervous chuckle. “Well, I mean we’re just acquaintances.”
Ryder raised his eyebrows as the other extremely hot guy standing next to him coughed and looked at Ryder.
“No, I mean we’re more than that.” Shaking my head and then moaning from the sheer pain, I held up my hands and said, “No! I mean, we’re just friends. New friends. Like I ran into him on the street and knocked all his paperwork out of his hands and then ran into him again—”
Oh Jesus, I’m digging myself into a hole.
“We ran into each other again yesterday when I was attending a meeting at a restaurant in Austin.”
The other guy coughed again and glared at Ryder.
My father walked up and kissed me on the cheek as he looked back at Ryder and said, “What a small world.”
It appeared Ryder had to force himself to pull his eyes off of me and as he looked at my father and nodded. “Indeed it is.”

BLURB:

Josiah grew up in a dying world. The Holdout survived, but when you are the son of Sylvia Cragen, you give up delusions early. He knew that they would die bloody--it wasn't a matter of if. Only when.

Parker shouldn't be alive. He should have died long before scouts from the Last Holdout rescued him. And he knows better than to believe that sailing away from the safety of the Holdout is a good idea.

Now, without the Holdout to protect them, all of his nightmares are coming true. Josiah is just crazy enough to believe that a fresh start is a good thing. But Parker has lived as prey, hunted by zombies and survivors before--and he knows that no one really survives. In the wild, zombie claimed world outside the walls of safety, there is only the dead walking.

---------------
Excerpt: I know how shattered the world is. I think Josiah likes to pretend I don’t. That I haven’t seen the very worse the world can offer. He likes to think that life began when I smacked him with a shovel and dragged him into my hideaway and we hid for days from the men I couldn’t trust. He’s wrong, of course. Even he knows he’s wrong. He just likes to pretend. And I let him, because explaining the nightmares and horrors aren’t worth it. He has enough guilt over the years I spent, before he brought me home.Misplaced guilt, but the bastard hasn’t always been rational about things. He and Sylvia think that the zombie apocalypse is the worst thing that has ever happened to the us. That it exposed a world of monsters. There wasn’t a way to rebuild, from that. But what they both forget is that the zombie apocalypse wasn’t the end. It was just when the world changed. Some of us—me, Siah—had never lived in a world that didn’t include the dead walking. But the zombies weren’t the things in the dark to be afraid of.I carry the scars of a lifetime of nightmares—and they come from humans. The walking, talking, cognitive demons who haunt the dying world.Monsters have always been among us. Sylvia’s miracle drug might have leveled the world and brought the dead to life, but it didn’t create monsters. It only let them come out and play with the broken remains of the world we used to know.It let them strip off their chameleon skin and revel in the ashes of a dying world.I know what monsters look like. And none have ever held the visage of a zombie.

Walk the Edge - cover
One moment of recklessness will change their worlds
Smart. Responsible. That's seventeen-year-old Breanna's role in her large family, and heaven forbid she put a toe out of line. Until one night of shockingly un-Breanna-like behavior puts her into a vicious cyberbully's line of fire—and brings fellow senior Thomas "Razor" Turner into her life. Razor lives for the Reign of Terror motorcycle club, and good girls like Breanna just don't belong. But when he learns she's being blackmailed over a compromising picture of the two of them—a picture that turns one unexpected and beautiful moment into ugliness—he knows it's time to step outside the rules. And so they make a pact: he'll help her track down her blackmailer, and in return she'll help him seek answers to the mystery that's haunted him—one that not even his club brothers have been willing to discuss. But the more time they spend together, the more their feelings grow. And suddenly they're both walking the edge of discovering who they really are, what they want, and where they're going from here.
Amazon * iBooks * Barnes and Noble * Kobo * Indiebound Add to your Goodreads Excerpt“I’m here about your mother.” The asshole knows he has me when my eyes snap to his.                 “She’s dead.” Like the other times I say the words, a part of me dies along with her.                 This guy has green eyes and they soften like he’s apologetic. “I know. I’m sorry. I’ve received some new evidence that may help us discover what caused her death.”                Anger curls within my muscles and my jaw twitches. This overwhelming sense of insanity is what I fight daily. For years, I’ve heard the whispers from the gossips in town, felt the stares of the kids in class, and I’ve sensed the pity of the men in the Reign of Terror I claim as brothers. It’s all accumulated to a black, hissing doubt in my soul.                 Suicide.                It’s what everyone in town says happened. It’s in every hushed conversation people have the moment I turn my back. It’s not just from the people I couldn’t give two shits about, but the people who I consider family.                 I shove away those thoughts and focus on what my father and the club have told me—what I have chosen to believe. “My mother’s death was an accident.”                He’s shaking his head and I’m fresh out of patience. I’m not doing this. Not with him. Not with anyone. “I’m not interested.”                I push off the railing and I did out the keys to my motorcycle as I bound down the steps. The detective’s behind me. He has a slow steady stride and it irritates me that he follows across the yard and doesn’t stop coming as I swing my leg over my bike.                 “What if I told you I don’t think it was an accident,” he says.                 Odds are it wasn’t. Odds are every whispered taunt in my direction is true. That my father and the club drove Mom crazy, and I wasn’t enough of a reason for her to choose life.                 To drown him out, I start the engine. This guy must be as suicidal as people say Mom was because he eases in front of my bike assuming I won’t run him down.                “Thomas,” he says.                 I twist the handle to rev the engine in warning. He raises his chin like he’s finally pissed and his eyes narrow on me. “Razor.”                I let the bike idle. If he’s going to respect me by using my road name, I’ll respect him for a few seconds. “Leave me the fuck alone.”                Damn if the man doesn’t possess balls the size of Montana. He steps closer to me and drops a bomb. “I have reason to believe your mom was murdered.”
And don’t miss the first book in the Thunder Road Series, NOWHERE BUT HERE!

Book Review: Desperately Seeking Epic

Desperately Seeking Epic
by B.N. Toler

Paul James loved Clara Bateman.
Hating her would have been easier.
She was the past, and he was hell-bent on keeping her there.
Or so he thought...

Craigslist Ad: DESPERATELY SEEKING EPIC

You’re my father.
I don’t know much about you. I know your name is Paul James, you’re a thrill seeker, and once upon a time you did stunts and people called you ‘Epic.’
I’ve been told you don’t know about me. That it’s complicated.
But for me it’s simple.
Here’s the thing: I’m twelve years old…and I’m dying.
And as much as this could crush my mother, I have to meet you before I go.
In time, I’m sure she’ll understand. She’s still in love with you.
So, Epic, if you read this, please come back. You don’t have to be my dad. You don’t even have to tell me you love me or you’re sorry. Just come see me.

Patiently waiting, but running out of time,

Neena
Lori's thoughts: ***ARC received in exchange for an honest review***

Very well written and although I really liked the story, I didn't completely love it. The whole time I was reading the book, I kept thinking I'd heard the story before. The Craig's List idea was a pretty unique idea and a great way to begin the story. There were some things about the story that bothered me, like the fact that Neena's mother, Clara, could have and should have tried a little harder to let Paul know he had a daughter.

Other than that, I'm not going to give anything away. It's a very good story, very touching and wonderfully written. If you want to read a book with a whole lot of feels, this is the one for you.

Book Review: The Score

The Score (Off-Campus #3)
by Elle Kennedy

He knows how to score, on and off the ice

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she's going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.
TeriLyn's thoughts: The Score is my new favorite of the Off-Campus series! Dean Di Laurentis and Allie Hayes shine right off the pages. Their banter and dialogue takes us on a mature NA adventure in which I found myself flipping furiously through the pages. Elle Kennedy has a distinct NA writing voice; told from both Dean and Allie's points of view, her characters experience college at full force as her expert writing enraptures the reader from beginning to end.

Dean's charm captured me from the first book in the series and I couldn't wait to read his story while likewise Allie's charisma grabs your attention. Both strong, interesting characters coupled together their story become explosive. Already friends, Dean - the player, the seemingly uninterested slacker - wants to show Allie - the drama queen, the relationship nester - the "Life of Dean" subsequently while introducing her to "Little Dean". He has so much to offer the world and Allie. Their romance blossoms from friends, to screw buddies, to something very sweet. The way Elle Kennedy unfolds the story ... well I couldn't stop reading even though I really wanted to savor every single sentence. There's just something about these two, their humor and wit, their intelligence, and how well they mesh together and help each other grow throughout the book in a very subtle, unconscious way that makes you want to read about them forever. As the major conflict reveals itself I found myself reeling. It took a turn that I didn't expect and how Kennedy unravels that was quite brilliant. The Life of Dean is a happy place to be, indeed. I'd love to read a novella in the future about these two as they have such natural chemistry in connecting and enchanting a reader.

This is a great series and in true Elle Kennedy fashion the moment at the end when she gives us a tease of what's to come next couldn't have been any better. I can't wait for the elusive Tucker to charm us in The Goal. A definite must read series!

Goodreads / AmazonSNEAK PEEK:Every word is a whisper across my lips. I want him to kiss me so bad. I even start to chant it like a mantra. Repeating the words over and over in my head. kiss me . . . kiss me . . . kiss me. . . All it would take is a small tilt of my head. I gently suck and he releases a moan that I feel vibrate throughout every inch of my body. His right hand slides up the back of my neck and he fists a handful of my hair. He gently pulls away and holds my stare, his golden brown eyes to my hazel green. His breath is coming out in quick pants. He looks like he’s fighting himself to make a decision. I’m blinking quickly, saying a silent prayer that he doesn’t make the wrong one.
