Book Review: Darker Water

Darker Water (Once and Forever #1)by Lauren Stewart (Goodreads Author) 4.04  ·   Rating Details  ·  5,152 Ratings  ·  609 ReviewsAfter another painful breakup, Laney Temple finally understands that love is a fairytale and sex rarely comes with a happy ending. She's too busy for it right now anyway--she has a business to run, art to create, and candy to crush. Eventually she'll be ready to switch from her plastic-or-silicon lover to a flesh-and-blood one. But before that happens, she needs to be sure she won't feel any of those annoying emotions that make her heart do things it wasn't meant to do...

Like break

Carson Bennett is completely upfront about what he wants, and it has nothing to do with Laney's heart. Her lips? Hell yeah. Other parts of her body? You better f*cking believe it. But her heart? Nope, not even a little. Until it does... a lot. But having feelings for someone isn't allowed. It's the kind of thing you're supposed to push down deep and cover up with one-night stands, sarcasm, and booze...

Like secrets

Two people want the same thing—a commitment to nothing more than great sex in a bunch of different positions. Simple. Enjoyable. A win-win. Problem is, those two people have families and fears and pain that spill into every moment of their lives, control what they do and who they are. And if either Carson or Laney can't free themselves from the past, they'll both be pulled under by it.

Darker Water is a stand-alone contemporary romance that does not end in a cliffhanger.
TeriLyn's thoughts: My first Lauren Stewart book and certainly not the last. This contemporary romance was equal parts fun and angsty. Told from both the hero and heroine's points of view, Stewart took us on whirlwind strangers-to friends-to lovers story. Carson can't love while Laney doesn't want to love but good sex and good banter keep these two tethered to each other throughout the whole book. Stewart's first person POV's kept me engaged throughout the story. The second half of the book was complete perfection in my opinion. I saw a more vulnerable, unguarded side to each character which made them much more likeable for me. The first half there were numerous times when I wanted to shake Laney a little bit; her neurotic back and forth drove me crazy. But overall an enjoyable, lovely read.

Book Review: Dirtiest Secret

Dirtiest Secret (S.I.N. #1)by J. Kenner (Goodreads Author) 4.02  ·   Rating Details  ·  930 Ratings  ·  279 ReviewsIt was wrong for us to be together, but it was even harder to be apart.

The memory of Dallas Sykes burns inside of me.

Everyone knows him as a notorious playboy, a man for whom women and money are no object. But to me, he’s still the one man I desperately crave—yet the one I can never have.

Dallas knows me better than anyone else. We bear the same scars, the same darkness in our past. I thought I could move on by staying away, but now that we’re drawn together once more, I can’t fight the force of our attraction or the temptation to make him mine.

We’ve tried to maintain control, not letting ourselves give in to desire. And for so long we’ve told ourselves no—but now it’s finally time to say yes.

Dirtiest Secret is intended for mature audiences.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Dirtiest Secret generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

The cover and blurb for this one intrigued me very much when I saw it offered on Netgalley. I'm so glad it did because this was a quite an entertaining, twisted, delicious start to a trilogy I'm so excited about reading. Dirtiest Secret is my first J. Kenner book and now I've bought the Stark series so I can read that too. Her writing flows fluidly from beginning to end in this erotic, taboo tale of two very broken souls and I'm quite impressed with the depth of plot entwined with the eroticism and passion in Kenner's words.

Dallas Sykes and Jane Martin have the most interesting, sordid, and tragic of histories. I felt the depth of their connection contrasted with the depth of their secrets almost immediately. The pain and anguish they both carry easily translates from the pages to my readers mind. As the their tortured past is being remembered in their current lives, as those long-held secrets become uncovered and truths untwisted, I felt myself growing even more invested their journey. Kenner's writing throughout the entire book was testament to this with each new discovery I became more intrigued and felt the need to know more. There were some circumstances where I felt the dialogue between the two became a little more corny than I would expect compared to their dark desires but never enough to really distract me as these two characters, cloaked in hidden wants, were compelling and entertaining.

All the characters and the plot of the book were excellent. I'm fully invested in this erotic suspense story and definitely will be reading the subsequent books in the trilogy. Kenner's style of storytelling grabs your attention and takes you on quite a ride. I'm glad I dipped my reading toes in the taboo nature of this romance with this author and would urge you not to let the taboo be deciding factor on whether or not you read because the story is suspenseful, entertaining, mysterious, erotic, and depraved much beyond the taboo. And while Dirtiest Secret does end in a way that leaves you craving more it's not an ending that leaves you stressed about the next part. It's perfectly situated to give the best hope for whats to come and the next set of complicated hurdles these two people will face. Definitely a solid read for me. Can't wait for more ... I want ALL the secrets!

Another Series From Pepper Winters!

Pennies
Pepper Winters
(Dollar #1)
Publication date: July 20th 2016
Genres: New Adult, Romance
“At 18 I had pennies, but money didn’t make me bold. At 19 I had dollars, but it didn’t dull the pain of being sold. At 20 I had hundreds, but then I met him and was found. At 21 I had thousands, but all I wanted was to be bound.”
“At 23 I had dollars, but life changed and made me rich. At 25 I had hundreds, but it wasn’t enough to stop my killing itch. At 27 I had thousands, but my reputation didn’t set me free. At 29 I had millions, but I met her and could finally see.”
Tasmin was killed on her 18th birthday. She had everything planned out. A psychology degree, a mother who pushed her to greatness, and a future anyone would die for. But then her murderer saved her life, only to sell her into a totally different existence.
Elder went from penniless to stinking rich with one twist of fate. His lifetime of crime and shadows of thievery are behind him but no matter the power he now wields, it’s not enough. He has an agenda to fulfil and he won’t stop until it’s complete.
But then they meet.
A beaten slave and a richly dressed thief. Money is what guided their separate fates. Money is what brought them together. And money is ultimately what destroys them.
She was poor.

He was rich.

Together…they were bankrupt.
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iTunes / Kobo / GooglePlay—WORD OF WARNINGPennies (Dollars #1) is a DARK ROMANCE. This means there will be hard to read scenes, graphic language, and sexual content (both implied and explicitly written). Please do not read if falling in love with a man who dresses in monster robes rather than knightly armour offends you. This is not a fairy-tale. This is a black abyss that must be climbed blind before deserving the light. Along with literary darkness, this is book one of a five book series. Each subsequent novel will be released every few months (so your fingernails don’t tire holding onto the cliff-hanger), and each is full-length. Please also remember not all answers are given and not every character is as they seem. There are beasts adorned in angel clothing and angels hiding in beast’s fur.

Remember that.

You have been warned.

Don’t say you weren’t told.

Read at your own peril.

Fall in love with Elder Prest at your own risk.

Are you ready?

You sure?

You really, really sure?

Okay then…enter the world of pennies and dollars.—EXCERPT:FREEDOM.

Such a modest word.

It carried very little importance for those who had it. But for those who didn’t, it was the most precious, prized, and promised hope of all.

I supposed I was lucky to know what freedom felt like.

For eighteen years, I’d been free. Free to learn what I wanted, befriend who I liked, and flirt with boys who passed my rigorous criteria.

I was a simple girl with ideals and dreams, encouraged by society to believe nothing could hurt me, that I should strive for an excellent career, and no one could stop me. Rules would keep me safe, police would keep the monsters away, and I could remain innocent and naïve to the darkness of the world.

Freedom.

I had it.

But then, I lost it.

Murdered, resuscitated, and sold.

I lost my freedom for so many years.

Until the day he entered my cage.

Him, with the black eyes and blacker soul.

The man who challenged my owner.

And set my imprisonment on an entirely different path.

Book Review: Appealed

Appealed (The Legal Briefs #3)by Emma Chase (Goodreads Author) 4.20  ·   Rating Details  ·  8,314 Ratings  ·  1,020 ReviewsWhen Brent Mason looks at Kennedy Randolph, he doesn’t see the awkward, sweet girl who grew up next door. He sees a self-assured, stunning woman…who wants to crush the most intimate - and prized - parts of his anatomy beneath the heels of her Christian Louboutins.

Brent has never let the loss of his leg in a childhood accident affect his ability to lead a fulfilling life. He sets high goals–and then he reaches them.

And now he has his sights set on Kennedy.
**
When Kennedy looks at Brent Mason, all she sees is the selfish, Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue-worthy teenager who humiliated her in high school to join the popular crowd. A crowd that made those years a living hell.

She’s not a lovesick social outcast anymore - she’s a DC prosecutor with a long winning streak behind her. Brent is the opposing attorney in her next case and she thinks it’s time to put him through a little hell of his own.

But things aren’t exactly working out that way.

Because every fiery exchange has her wondering if he’s as passionate in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. Each argument and objection only makes him want her more. In the end, Brent and Kennedy may just find themselves in love…or in contempt of court.

APPEALED is a sexy, humorous romance about first crushes, second chances and the final verdict of the heart.
TeriLyn's thoughts: Another winner in The Legal Briefs series from Emma Chase. This second chance, friends-to-lovers tale stars the last of defense attorneys standing, Brent Mason and his once in a lifetime girl, Kennedy Randolph. Each character has precisely unique back stories and guards around their hearts so when they meet again fireworks immediately fly. Readers see a side to Brent we've not experienced before and likewise learn what's like to be in irrevocable love. It was fun navigating through their relationship on Emma Chase's fast and funny storytelling train. All the gang from the series make very sweet appearances in this book. Appealed plays an important for the defense gang of Becker, Mason, Santos, and Shaw and I loved reading it.

Book Review: Sustained

Sustained (The Legal Briefs #2)by Emma Chase (Goodreads Author) 4.37  ·   Rating Details  ·  13,313 Ratings  ·  1,764 ReviewsA knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.
TeriLyn's thoughts: I absolutely LOVED Sustained. Jacob Becker, Chelsea McQuaid and her band of wildy charming kids were such a joy to read. This book, written in the hilarious prose only Emma Chase can wholly provide, touched upon all sorts of my favorite romance book tropes. Bad boy with a heart of gold, sassy woman whose needs and wants are surpassed by those of who she loves most, and six children who undoubtedly steal the show. There's romance, wit, comedy, and so many heart warming components to this book. It was a breeze reading through Jake's point of view as he struggles to understand who he is really is inside. Him discovering himself through the eyes of the McQuaid family was fantastic. Characters from book one are all back to grace the pages. And once again, Emma Chase writes a lovely, funny, and sweet romance. Sustained is perfectly suited for readers to get lost in it's pages for an afternoon. This is definitely my favorite of the series. There's nothing better than watching a big, tough man totally lose it over a woman and the children in her charge.

Book Review: Overruled

Overruled (The Legal Briefs #1)by Emma Chase (Goodreads Author) 3.84  ·   Rating Details  ·  14,481 Ratings  ·  1,418 ReviewsEmma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled Series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs Series.

As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.
***

Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits" begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else entirely.
***

What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.
TeriLyn's thoughts: Emma Chase holds the standard for funny male leads in the palm of her hand. Her writing is crisp and fluid as she provides a hilariously constructed love story. Stanton Shaw is an upstanding man with values that make him irresistibly charming. Sofia Santos gives everything she's got: sass, intelligence, and her own brand of charm. From buddies in bed/coworkers to a meaningful relationship wasn't easy for these two but it was funny and heartwarming. Told from both points of view, Overruled is a contemporary romance written in the distinct voice of Emma Chase that you most definitely should read.

Excerpt:

ANYTHING BUT LOVE Excerpt
When the sky finally releases its rain, it’s in a downpour and not a mist.Cari takes off in a jog, yelling, “Race you!”I give her a twenty-second lead and then decide to make it thirty seconds. She holds my cap with one hand, trying to keep the rain out of her face. At forty-five seconds, I take off in a slow run. The sand slows me down a little, so I stick close to the water. I catch up to her before we reach the tidal pool and reduce my pace to match hers. She scowls and tries to sprint through the deeper sand. When I pass her, I jog backward for a few steps. She flips me her favorite finger. Grinning, I race up the stairs. Once I hit the concrete, I sprint to our cars. I can’t recommend running in jeans, but the look on Cari’s face when she sees me leaning against my truck makes it worth it.Her cheeks are flushed and she’s breathing hard. Combined with the way she moves when she dances, I now have a clear picture of what she’d be like in bed. “I think you should tell a girl upfront you’re a runner if she challenges you to a race.” Her chest heaves with her breath, drawing my eyes to her breasts.“You didn’t discuss race parameters before you took off. No one to blame but yourself.”“What are you? Some sort of marathoner?”“All State in track.”“Yeah, that was when? A decade ago? I competed in gymnastics from five until fourteen, but that’s not helping me now.”I add bendy and flexible to the things I imagine about Cari in bed.“I compete in the occasional triathlon.”“Your stamina is impressive. You’re not out of breath at all.”I push off from the side of the truck and cage her against her car. “You like my stamina? Now imagine how good I am in bed.”Her gasp is soft, but I catch it. I want to shock her. Something about her gets under my skin. I want her to feel the same. With a low chuckle, I snatch my cap from her hair.  She grabs for it and I hold it over my head. When she jumps, her body slides against mine as she lands. My stamina may be impressive, but my self-control sucks.

Book Review: Ginger's Heart

Ginger's Heart (A Modern Fairytale)by Katy Regnery (Goodreads Author) 4.05  ·   Rating Details  ·  987 Ratings  ·  272 ReviewsLibrarian Note: Alternate Cover Edition for ASIN: B01CKIU6OE.

From New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery, a modern-day fairytale about the many faces of love.

Once upon a time there were two cousins:
one golden like the sun,
one dark like midnight,
one a protector,
one a predator,
one a Woodsman
and
one a Wolf…
both owning equal,
but different,
parts of a little girl’s heart.

In this contemporary love story, loosely inspired by "Little Red Riding Hood," the woodsman and the wolf are cousins, and Little Red is the girl with whom they both fall in love.

Beautiful Ginger McHuid, daughter of Kentucky's premiere horse breeder, grows up on her family farm, best friends with Cain Wolfram, the son of her father's Stallion Manager, and Cain's cousin, Josiah Woodman, son of a local banker. Throughout their happy childhood, the three are inseparable friends, but as they mature into adults, complicated feelings threaten to destroy their long history of friendship and love.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Ginger's Heart generously provided by RockstarLit PR in exchange for an honest review.**

With each new book of Katy Regnery's modern fairytale series I'm reminded why I love contemporary romance stories; a true testament to Regnery's specific style of lyrical and character-centric storytelling. Her correlations between classic fairytales and her own versions perfectly romance her readers. In Ginger's Heart her writing pulses with the beat of this story about a young girl and her compassionate heart split between the light and dark within two very distinctively different boys.

Ginger's Heart, just like Regnery's previous fairytale stories, engaged me as a reader with entertaining prose, thoughtful inner conflict, and well placed dialogue. This story stands proud with a structured plot hooking you from the very beginning constantly evolving along with her characters. Lots of angst and self-reflecting pour from the multiple points of views developing each of these characters fully. This author's style of writing speaks freely to my romance loving soul with much ease as her characters relate to real inner conflicts within ourselves about the self-discovery on the path to growing up. Her themes question the validity of passion, turmoil, and comfort of everlasting love in profound ways.

As always with this author's work I want to preserve the plot as it twists a little to develop in such an organic way I'd never wish to spoil. Trust in the writing, plot, and characters to get you to a place you can feel satisfied and completely invested in the story. Trust in all the feels and the roller coaster of emotions Regnery takes you on to get you to this place. Really feel the conflicts and super sweet moments for all they are because this author never takes you on an easy one but rather a bittersweet test of love. And honestly, there were a couple times where I thought certain thoughts about character action and few repetitive contextual things surrounding the different points of view. But having reminded myself that Regnery always has a grand plan in her books, I found with Ginger's Heart the road was winding throughout and those little things really added to the conflict and ultimate discovery, for Ginger especially, leading us through a complete 360 viewpoint of the characters and their development.

In the interest of not sounding any more vague than I already do I'm just going to highly suggest that romance lovers read this book actually, read this entire series of stand alone stories. There are electric qualities to Katy Regnery's writing that hypnotize me as a reader that I think will hypnotize you as well. With Ginger's Heart I felt captivated once again by the depth and exploration of each character's journey. This is a story, a series, all romance readers should definitely read.
