Midnight Soul Excerpt & Giveaway

~Franka~“You need to leave,” I declared. His brows drew together a moment before his expression showed clearly that comprehension had dawned.Sadly, comprehension might have dawned but he didn’t leave. He crouched by the bed and offered in a soft voice, “You need me to carry you to the other room so you can have a bit of privacy?”Dear goddess. He thought I needed a chamber pot. But…What was happening to my face?Dear goddess! The heat I felt in my cheeks could be nothing other than me blushing.I didn’t blush. I’d never blushed. Not even when I’d set about seducing my first lover at age sixteen.I needed to be quit of this man as soon as possible.“No…I…do…not,” I bit out.“Sure?” he asked kindly.“I need you to leave, Noctorno,” I used his full name in an effort to irritate, something that worked if the flare in his eyes was any indication, “so Josette can prepare me. We’re away to Kristian’s this morning.”Another drawing of his brows before he asked, “What?”“After my toilette, Josette and I are to my sleigh so we can begin our journey to my brother’s home.”His eyes got bigger as his mouth inquired peculiarly, “Are you high?”“No,” I answered his ridiculous question unnecessarily, “Indeed, I’m low. As you can see since I’m lying abed.”For a second he just stared at me.Then he threw his head back and burst into loud, deep, beautiful laughter.I wanted to throw something at him.Unfortunately, in my current position, this was not an option open to me.“I fail to see what’s amusing,” I noted. He controlled his mirth only to mutter, “I’ll explain it later.” He went on more distinctly, “Frannie, you’re not goin’ to your brother’s today. Or tomorrow. Or until you’re fit. Then, maybe Valentine will spirit you there, or whatever the fuck that’s called. But for the foreseeable future, your ass is in that bed and you’re resting so you can heal.”Well!Who did he think he was, telling me what I would or would not do?“As you’ve determined,” I began, “this is not the first time I’ve been in this condition so I do believe that I know best what I’m capable of and…”I stopped speaking because he came slightly out of his crouch so he could put his face into my face and he was no longer looking mirthful. He was looking angry.Very angry.“That was when you had no one lookin’ out for you but that’s not the case anymore. So this is how it’s gonna be,” he announced. He then, to my shock, irritation and outrage, announced how it was going to be.Like he had the right to tell me how it was going to be!

About Kristen Ashley:

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Blake Ruthless teaser 1

“Why did you do that?”

It was the first time she’d spoken without being prompted. “Do what?”

Her face flushed the sweetest pink. The color went all the way down that sexy V-neck. Her breasts flushed as well as her face, and it made his damn dick tighten. “Kiss me. Why did you kiss me like that?”

Oh, so many reasons, but he gave her the most compelling one. “I wanted to.”

The minute she’d opened the door and he’d seen her standing there looking anxious, he’d known how to calm her down. All he’d had to do was put his hands on her and some odd connection flared between the two of them. She hadn’t fought him. He could have gone on kissing her. He’d been the one to pull away.

It was like the minute he walked in, he was the only thing that existed for her. It made him feel ten feet tall, but it also made him want to please her.

It was an unsettling sensation.

Her hands came up, fingers on the sides of the table. “You know what I’m asking. You knew I wasn’t alone. Why did you pretend to be my boyfriend?”

It was easy to see she’d wanted him to wait for her at the restaurant so as to avoid him meeting her sister and ex. When she’d opened the door, he’d immediately known something was wrong. He’d gotten a glimpse of her sister and known Ellie had likely needed a hand. It had to be tough on a woman’s ego to lose even a pathetic excuse of a husband to a younger sister.

“You were alone with your sister who slept with your husband. Excuse me. Ex-husband.”

She shook her head. “At the time, we were definitely married. How did you know he was my ex-husband?”

“He took half your net wealth. I’m your lawyer. At this level, a good lawyer is less legal counsel and more war consultant. I can’t properly perform my duties if I don’t know everything about you, including the fact that you tend to have terrible taste in men.”

She frowned. “I haven’t had a ton of boyfriends. I’m not sure what my taste is.”

He really wanted to understand why she’d married that obvious prick. “What attracted you to him? Because from where I was standing, he looked like a dickwad desperate to be twenty-one again.”

She bit into her bottom lip, her eyes glancing away from him. “He wasn’t always like that. I actually met him when he was twenty-one. He was far more mature then.”

He liked her candor. “You were in college?”

“Last year of undergrad. We dated for two years and then it seemed like it was time to get married. We’d moved back here to Manhattan so I could take my place at StratCast. I thought he was going to go to grad school, but he decided on a different path.”

“What path was that?”

A single brow rose over her right eye. “You don’t know?”

Of course he knew. He knew everything. “Are you referring to your ex-husband’s penchant for swinging for the fences? When it comes to investments, that is.”

It was what he liked to call “idiots who funded ridiculous ideas.” They never wanted a simple profit out of their money. They wanted millions and really fucking fast. They swung for the grand slam when all they needed to do was get on base.

It took a true genius to take a single idea and make millions off it. Drew had.

Her shoulders straightened. “He wanted the easy solution. A get-rich-quick scheme. He wasn’t that way at first. At one point he was very intellectual. It’s what attracted me to him. He was curious about the world and liked to discuss everything from politics to social jus- tice to movies we saw. He changed. I didn’t. In some ways, I blame getting involved with me for what happened to him. He got around my father and real wealth and wanted some of his own. When I met him, he wanted to be a professor. He wanted to teach.”

At least he’d gotten her this far. She was talking. Now he needed to get those shoulders down from around her earlobes. For one moment, for that moment when he’d drawn her into his arms and pressed his mouth to hers, she’d relaxed against him, given over to him. Her body had softened and she’d leaned into him, and if he’d pressed her, he didn’t know what would have happened. She might have continued kissing him, forgetting all about the other people in the room. He could have cupped her breast, her ass. Put his hands anywhere he liked.

She hadn’t given a damn that they hadn’t been alone. All she’d cared about was him.

Book Review: All the Ugly and Wonderful Things

All the Ugly and Wonderful Thingsby Bryn Greenwood (Goodreads Author) 4.25  ·   Rating Details  ·  413 Ratings  ·  288 ReviewsAs the daughter of a meth dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. Struggling to raise her little brother, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible "adult" around. She finds peace in the starry Midwestern night sky above the fields behind her house. One night everything changes when she witnesses one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold, wreck his motorcycle. What follows is a powerful and shocking love story between two unlikely people that asks tough questions, reminding us of all the ugly and wonderful things that life has to offer.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **All the Ugly and Wonderful Things generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

Bryn Greenwood penned a truly compelling novel. I'm quite grateful for the opportunity to read such a thought-provoking book. Exemplary writing makes this story stand out. But it's the unique and fascinating story telling that made this book everything. Told from the multiple points of view of characters coming and going continuously driving the story forward we learn of a dysfunctional family (to say the least) and a little girl born into dire circumstances out of her control.

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things is a literary fiction novel with romantic qualities, coming of age themes, and family saga traits. During my reading there were themes that reminded me of two of my favorite books: Copeland's All Families are Psychotic and Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. Outrageous and desperate family antics, uncomfortable settings, and rampant, rapid maturing of young people due to their social circumstance are all present as well as themes of drugs and addiction and the grossly uneducated of our society. Throughout the story a major relationship develops providing both catalyst and conflict as it's highly taboo. Yet it's so evocative in nature because of how we feel. Greenwood flips perceptions right on their heads while making the reader uncomfortable and intrigued at the same time.

Miss Wavonna Quinn, Wavy, is the main protagonist of the book. Her story starts at very young age and progresses through her lifetime. Again, told from multiple points of view. The way settings are explored and relationships dissected was so interesting. Her inner monologues providing must information rather any dialogue. It has a certain stream of consciousness feel to it. Wavy is provocative, scarred, intelligent, and loyal. Her strength is in her perseverance. Connections to her are felt viscerally when you learn of her from other points of view. A great understanding fosters those connections and you feel a part of this girl and her ethereal qualities. Even you feel pity and sadness for her. Even when what's happening to her and around her feels like it shouldn't be happening at all.
"The harder a thing was, the more likely she'd be able to do it."
There's so much that could be said for this story. Parts of it made me feel so uncomfortable I had to pause before moving forward. Parts of it made me disgusted in the failings our system. Parts had me astounded at the layers this author uncovered. Parts of it had me so contented at events I wouldn't normally feel contented about at all. But that's the beauty of this book. The range of emotions and the intelligent story telling even when the characters aren't intelligent at all. Bryn Greenwood did something outside the box and she excelled greatly at it. Her writing hooked me from the very beginning. Her telling of this story left me in awe. All the Ugly and Wonderful Things was a extraordinary literary experience and I highly recommend everyone having it.

Book Review: Swear on This Life

Swear on This Lifeby Renee Carlino (Goodreads Author) 4.39  ·   Rating Details  ·  185 Ratings  ·  135 ReviewsWhen a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J.Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn’t thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That’s because the novel is patterned on Emiline’s own dark and desperate childhood, which means that “J. Colby” must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront “J. Colby,” but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Swear on this Life generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

Another compelling story told from the distinct romance writing voice of Renee Carlino. Her writing once again pulls deliberate and full focus from readers thrusting us into this second-chance-type love story. Yet so much more than romance is the focus of Swear on This Life. The structure and format of her story is unique providing a fresh perspective for the romance genre. And the growth and realizations discovered by the heroine through many different themes makes the book much more than a love story.

Told from the first person point of view of the heroine and alternating between her present and her past we learn the story of two poor kids who grew up in much less than desirable circumstances with not the best parental figures. The past is told from the perspective of a book written with this book and provides an extra layer of certainty and integrity to the hero and heroines lives. It's the sweet story of two children living a dilapidated life and finding solace in each other. They learn and grow together until one fateful night when they say good bye. In the present, the scars of their past shape everything they accomplish or not so deeply even when they try to repress it. Each having moved on from the atrocities of their childhood by letting each other go yet never truly forgetting their intense emotional bond.

Carlino's writing chops are nothing short of stellar. Her story structure really impressed me with this book. How fluidly she unfolded all the emotions, how she incorporated the past, how she made it so much more than a simple love story all shape this story in the best of ways. The book presents a sort of love triangle in an interesting and non-angsty light, if that makes any sense propelling the self-discovery, forgiveness and acceptance into a tight, succinct story. Swear on this Life is an intriguing read. The complexity of the relationships explored and the dynamics of the characters reminiscent of that forever kind of life-altering love. It's childhood relationships and circumstance molding us into the adults we are. The themes within this story are as triumphant as they are harrowing. What I found interesting about the romance of the book is that the focus isn't truly on the romance. It's more self introspection and growth of the heroine through the undying, fierce emotions from her childhood love.

For romance lovers and women's fiction lovers. For a lovely day of reading a brilliantly written story. For lovers of Renee Carlino's work. She weaves a beautiful story. Swear on This Life will capture your reading heart.

Book Review: The Gun Runner

The Gun Runner (Mafia Made #1)by Scott Hildreth (Goodreads Author) 4.06  ·   Rating Details  ·  49 Ratings  ·  42 ReviewsThe first book in a seductive new series from Scott Hildreth, the #1 Amazon bestselling author of BRAWLER and HARD CORPS.

Tripp

Once, I took down terrorists on the front lines as a marine.
Now I'm in the business of bad.
I've sold guns to people others might not approve of.
I've eliminated the criminals, the lowlifes and the thugs who've tread on my turf.
And I looked the Sicilian Mafia boss in the eye and told him to f*** off.
No one tells me no, unless it's their last word.
I didn't just act the part of bad—I lived it. Then she stumbled into my life.
I tried to stay away from her. Tried focusing on moving my merchandise. But one smile from Terra was like a shot to the heart.
She's mine now. And no one threatens what's mine.

Terra

I've seen a lot of terrible things in my life.
I grew up around lies and deception, and I ran away from all of them.
Until I met him.
I knew he was corrupt. I knew he was dangerous.
I should have stayed away, but my attraction to him, my needfor him, overrode my logic.
Now I love him.
If he finds out who I am, we're done and I'll be nothing.
I never wanted to be the Mafia princess they tried to make me, but mia familia had other plans. And what mia familia wants…it gets.
Only Michael Tripp can save me.

Tripp and Terra's story continues in Book Two of Mafia Made,The Game Changer
TeriLyn's thoughts: **The Gun Runner generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

Scott Hildreth wrote an entertaining mafia-esque romance. The first person writing style is engaging and the characters intriguing. There was a certain charisma to this book that made in an entertaining read. The plot is different from what I'm used to especially where a mafia princess is concerned and the hero she chooses. From start to finish there was never a dull moment where these two main characters were concerned.

Michael and Terra weren't looking for each other but insta-lust went viral the moment their eyes met. Their individual stories are just as interesting as their story together is passionate. The heat emanated from the pages, especially from Michael, is undeniable. As the two foster a new relationship without revealing pertinent details about themselves their lives begin to intersect in ways neither of them fully understand. Secondary characters provide excellent comedic relief as well as the banter between Michael and Terra.

With more to come from the Mafia Made series I hope Michael and Terra's story gets further delved into. There are some plot points I think that need wrapped up in addition to the biggest one where book one leaves off. It's not a cliffhanger though, just leaves more to be desired in a good way. The Gun Runner was an easy, enjoyable read. I look forward to more in the series.

Book Review: Rock With You

Rock with You (Risking It All 0.5)by Rachel Lacey (Goodreads Author) 4.19  ·   Rating Details  ·  32 Ratings  ·  30 ReviewsSWEET AS SUGAR. SEXY AS SIN . . .

Carly Taylor is pretty sure she's dreaming. It's not possible that Sam Weiss - rock star god and sexy hotness personified - is actually in her bakery. This sort of thing never happens in the too-small town of Haven. Or to her. And being stranded in a secluded mountain cabin with the deliciously decadent Sam during an ice storm? This is definitely not Carly's real life . . .

Now there's just the two of them, a roaring fire, lots of food and drink, and a sizzling attraction - one that just might make Carly do the unexpected. For one night, she'll live the fantasy. For one night, nothing else matters. . . not her struggling business, not her lonely life, not Sam's bad-boy reputation. But sometimes one night can turn one crazy, beautiful dream into something real.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Rock with You generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

This novella kicking off Rachel Lacey's Risking It All series packed a good 'ole romantic punch. Full of open heart and sexy dialogue, intelligent 3rd person writing, and an easy structure Rock with You left me with a smile on my face in just 80 odd pages. This novella was my first title by Rachel Lacey and won't be my last. It's laced with all the romance and swoonworthy moment Forever publishing is know for (and that I love so much!) and Lacey holds her own very well with her outstanding writing.

The two character of the story, Sam and Carly, have an insta-lust style meeting. From there a lovely give and take relationship ensues as the two are stranded together due to an ice storm in North Carolina. The two of them really were just fun. Each having their own personal issues even though they're quite different circumstances. Their chemistry is palpable and I can't say enough how pleasurable it was read their story. No drama, no fuss. Just a really sweet love story. I can't wait for the rest of the series!

Book Review: Covet

Covet (Splendor #1)by Janet Nissenson (Goodreads Author) 4.42  ·   Rating Details  ·  154 Ratings  ·  42 ReviewsThe long-awaited prequel to a love story for the ages.

She was the only woman he wanted…but the only one he couldn’t have

Ian Gregson had been born into wealth and power – one of the privileged heirs of the top luxury hotel chain in the world. To the outside world, he was seemingly the man who had everything – money, prestige, good looks, charisma – a man who could have any woman he desired. But the only woman he’d ever truly coveted was forbidden to him for far too many reasons to count – her youth, her employment within his company, and especially her commitment to another man.

Tessa Lockwood’s young life has been one of deprivation, misfortune, and heartbreaking loss. Working for the Gregson Hotel Group offers up a glimpse into a world she had never before imagined – one of affluence, sophistication, and splendor. And meeting the suave, elegant Ian Gregson for the very first time awakens feelings in her that she struggles to repress, never imagining that a man like him could find a nobody like her attractive.

Ian and Tessa fight their feelings for the other, knowing that a relationship between them can never exist. But when matters of the heart are involved, things are never quite that simple. How long will both of them be able to hold on before betraying their forbidden attraction to each other? Or will they be destined to remain forever apart?
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Covet generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

My first Janet Nissenson story and certainly not my last. Covet is the prequel to the much anticipated love story between Ian Gregson and Tessa Lockwood. Told from the excellently written third person POV and the balanced story-telling of Janet Nissenson, Covet is just a little bit different from any other romance I've ever read. It's a re-telling in trilogy format of a previous work of Nissenson, which I have no read at all. I'm experiencing this story as something brand new and not part of another series - I found that important to note.

This books provides an in-depth look into the histories of both Ian and Tessa providing so much detail that we become intimately involved with them as characters. It lays the foundation for what I expect will be a truly grand love story in Crave. There were times throughout the story where I thought inner dialogue of Ian and Tessa was repetitious to previous thoughts. I also got a bit lost in some the mundane details. However, Nissenson creates this absolutely biting tension and passion that I was intrigued throughout the whole story. Who each of these characters are leads me to believe in each of them and I crave more from both. The writing and structure of the story are especially interesting in this book. The set up and how evocative it is to the reader is truly special. And it's not evocative because H/h have this grand story, it's evocative because you want them to so badly.

Covet isn't a traditional romance in and of itself. It's a foundation and a lesson in patience and self control. It's about morals and ethics and a truly passionate connection that one cannot act upon. It's a highly addictive way to become enamored with two characters, honestly. Intimate thoughts and discoveries made when the two aren't actually a couple. I loved seeing where Tessa and Ian started and now I can't wait to see what happens when things start going their way.
