Interview: Kate Cowan of KC Designs
Welcome book cover artist Kate Cowan of KC Designs!SRNA: Thank you Kate for taking the time to answer some questions for us!
KC: My pleasure! I just love your blog.
SRNA: How did you get started designing book covers?
KC: Well, I started by doing digital art on my own and uploading it to DeviantArt. Someone I met online loved my digital art (she happened to be an author!) and last summer she contacted me to do a book cover for one of her anthologies. From there, the whole business thing kind of snowballed - a publisher saw my cover and loved it, and asked me to do some covers for them, and from there, some indie authors started contacting me for covers.
SRNA: What software program(s) do you use to create them?
KC: Mainly, Photoshop. It's my 'tool of the trade', I guess! I also love sketching, though, and I've done some work in pencil. Working on the computer is great, but nothing beats the feel of pencil on paper!
SRNA: Of the ones you've done so far, I'm sure you have some you are particularly proud of. Do you have a favorite?
KC: Oh, there's a few! I love Sapphire City by Amy Richie, and the cover of Legacy by Tara Brown is one of my all-time favorites because it was a piece I did for fun, and Tara loved it enough to make it her book cover! To name a few others, Ianni, and The Unraveling of Avery Snow, both by Christy Sloat, Sacrifice by Stacey Rourke, Bunches by Jill Valley, and the cover of Ascending the Veil, by Venessa Kimball, which isn't out just yet.
SRNA: Do you read the book before designing the cover or how do you come up with a particular design for a specific book?
KC: No, though I wish I had enough time to read all of the books I do artwork for. Usually the author knows what s/he wants, but if not, they usually give me a back blurb, or a favorite paragraph/scene, and we go from there. If that does not work, they give me a bit of info on the book, and we head to DeviantArt, where we search through some art for inspiration. It sounds corny, but I love working with the authors - MOST of the time!! Hearing about the books they've written and what all of their ideas are.
SRNA: Do you have flat fees or do you charge by the hour, how does that work?
KC: I've tried out flat fees, but being a small company, I've had situations where people just want too many alterations, or they want more stock images that the flat fee can cover. I've got a base price, and stock images and alterations are above that, so everything works out fairly for everyone, and no one gets taken advantage of.
SRNA: From start to finish how long does it typically take you to create one of your masterpieces?
KC: Hm, it depends! I've had covers done in a day, because they author was happy right from draft 1, but I've also had covers that take weeks because an author has that much time, and just wants it to be perfect, no matter how much time it takes.
SRNA: Do you hire models for your work or do you purchase stock?
KC: I would LOVE to be able to hire models, but so far, getting stock images seems to have worked out. One day soon, though, I think I'd love to have a photo shoot.
SRNA: Where can people see samples of your work and how can they contact you?
KC: There are a few ways to see my art: the links below, to my Facebook page for K.C. Designs, and my Wix Portfolio are the best ways to see samples of my book covers. Messaging me through my Facebook page is also the perfect way to contact me!
Email | Facebook | DeviantArt | Website
SRNA: Last but not least, what's your sign? :)
KC: Scorpio! Describes me perfectly, too ;)

Sneak Peek: Epiphany
"I had my first psychic dream when I was nine. Psychic implied power, and powerful wasn't a word I’d use to describe myself. I couldn't foretell the future or conjure visions at will, but I couldn't think of a more fitting word to describe what I sometimes saw in my dreams."
For 23-year-old Mackenzie Hill, tossing her life down the garbage disposal is easy after a painful incident shatters her life. Her heart is bleeding, and moving to Watcher’s Point is a chance to start anew, only she isn't prepared for the guy who walks out of her dreams and into the flesh. Literally . . . because she’s been dreaming about this sexy stranger for years.
Mackenzie is even less prepared to face the dark nature of her dreams. They've turned disturbingly gruesome, full of blood and murder, and when they begin to coincide with the media’s headlines, she and Aidan realize her visions might be the key to stopping a madman from killing again.
Only Aidan has painful secrets of his own, and perhaps the biggest danger of all is falling for him.

Christina Jean Michaels was born in Paradise, California, but she has found the true home of her heart in Eugene, Oregon where she finds plenty of inspiration for storytelling. When she was young, her mother said she hated words. Now she can't imagine not writing. She became an avid reader when she was thirteen and discovered the world of Sweet Valley High. About a year later she realized she could play God and write about her own characters. She has been writing in some form ever since.
She lives with her husband and their four children—three rambunctious UFC/wrestling-loving boys and one girl who steals everyone’s attention.
Something inside me cracked right along with Aidan’s expression. Everything he’d been hiding spilled from his eyes.
“Aidan . . .”
“I need a drink.” He strode away, leaving me glued to the spot where he’d trapped me. A crash resounded from the kitchen, followed by splintering glass. I willed my feet to move, ignoring the little voice of reason pointing out that maybe I should leave him be for now.
He was sweeping broken glass into a dustpan when I walked in. “Are you okay?” Instantly, I wished I could cast a net and pull back the stupid, inconsiderate question. Of course he wasn’t okay. “I’m sorry. I know you’re not . . . okay.”
“Don’t worry about it. I know what you meant.” He emptied the dustpan into the trashcan and then opened a bottle of Jack Daniel’s, all the while refusing to meet my eyes.
“Mind sharing?” I asked. If there was ever a time for drinking, it was now.
“I thought you were beyond corruptible.”
I recalled how he’d said something similar on Halloween. “You remember more about that night than you let on, don’t you?”
He pulled two tumblers from a dark cherry wood cabinet. “I remember you.” Amber liquid sloshed into both glasses as he poured, and moment later he closed the distance between us. “Straight up?” The question sounded like a challenge.
“Sure.” I gulped down the whiskey and ignored the burn as it slid down my throat. Heat ignited low in my belly, though whether from the alcohol or Aidan’s scrutiny, I wasn’t sure.
He leaned against the kitchen sink and finished off his own drink before pouring another. “I’m sorry I blew up on you. I didn’t come here to make friends . . . to complicate things.”
“I’m a complication?”
His laughter was empty, cold as a morgue. “You’re about as complicated as they come.”
I stared at the bottom of my glass. “Why’s that?”
“You look at me as if you see right through me. It’s unsettling.”
“I don’t mean to unsettle you.”
“Consider me unsettled. Problem is, I think you’re using more than eyesight.” He glanced at me and, never breaking eye contact, finished the whiskey in one long gulp.
I gripped my glass. I’d rather have my teeth pulled than tell him how often I’d dreamed of him over the years. “Can I have another?”
He grabbed the bottle and moved toward me, and I saw him in my mind’s eye as he’d been in the drawing; bare chest, subtle muscles, hair narrowing down to his belly button . . . I stumbled back as he poured a refill.
“Thanks.” The smooth whiskey went down easier the second time.
“Did you dream about me too? Is that why you followed me on Halloween?”
I took another step back, but he advanced until the edge of the counter bit into my spine. “I didn’t.” The lie sounded weak, even to my own ears.
“I think you did. The way you looked at me, like you saw a ghost or something . . .” Brushing against me, he set his tumbler on the cool granite. “At first, I thought maybe you recognized me from somewhere—”
“No,” I interrupted, desperate to lead him away from the subject. “You were imagining things.”
“No, I wasn't.” He gently pried the empty glass from my fingers and set it next to his. Nothing stood between us now; not even the last shred of my secret.
I held fast to it anyway, like a child unwilling to let go of a tattered teddy bear. “You can think whatever you want. Doesn’t make it true.”
“Doesn't make it not true.”

Excerpt:
She cut the song off before the last chorus and opened her eyes. “Well?” she asked, looking up at Tonya. Who had tears in her eyes. “Whoa, hey, what’s wrong?”“That was beautiful, really. It was like you knew my whole life story, which you don’t, thank God.”“Thanks.” Kylie beamed. “But you can’t play that tonight,” Tonya said evenly, dabbing her tears away with a bar napkin. Her heart sank into her stomach. “I can’t?”“No.” Kylie watched Tonya’s eyes harden as she gripped her shoulder. “Listen to me, kid. I know a few things. Like for one, your life’s goal is probably not to be a waitress in a honky tonk. And for two, I know that all you really want is to make it big in country music like every other kid in this town, and that’s all fine and good and I’ll say I knew you when. Matter of fact, hold up, sign this napkin.”Kylie’s mouth gaped open at her friend’s blunt observations. And she was seriously holding out a napkin and a pen. Slowly, Kylie took it and scribbled her name across it. “But here’s what else I know. If you go play that sappy song that no one knows the words to, everyone will smile and nod and keep right on drinking. The managers and talent scouts that show will keep texting on their phones and someone somewhere might say, ‘That was a nice song,’ or ‘She was cute,’ and that will be it.”“Okay, so…” Kylie was still too stunned to say much of anything. Tears threatened behind her eyes. This was the song she’d worked so hard on, put so much of herself into. Wasn’t it a good thing to be original?“So you get your cute little butt out there, you sing some Taylor Swift or Kelly whoever cover, and you shake it up and make it your own so the audience can sing along while not comparing you to whoever really sings the damn thing.” “Oh, is that all? Well, that should be a piece of cake. Thanks for the advice.” Kylie rolled her eyes and left them focused on the ceiling so her tears wouldn’t fall. “Look, you can sing, you play good enough. You’re kinda sexy and all that stuff they want. I wouldn’t waste my breath or my time, Kylie, if you didn’t just blow me the hell away, but I know this town. If this was your first day of meeting with a label exec, I’d say bust that song out. But this is a bar, and you need to get their attention fist. The guys who come in here are looking for one thing. Acts that bring in money. People want to hear that song that makes them stand up and sing along and stay up drinking and partying all night. Think you can do that?” Kylie swallowed hard, pushed her tears back behind her eyes, and forced a smile. She’d grown up without a mother. Buried the only man she’d ever loved less than a year ago. Lost everything in the blink of an eye. Surely she could do this. “Yeah. Yeah I can.”“Good, ‘cause no matter what they call it, this shit ain’t for amateurs.” Tonya stood, offering her a weak smile before leaving Kylie all alone to figure out what the hell she was going to do.

Book Review: Tangled
Drew Evans is a winner. Handsome and arrogant, he makes multimillion-dollar business deals and seduces New York’s most beautiful women with just a smile. He has loyal friends and an indulgent family. So why has he been shuttered in his apartment for seven days, miserable and depressed?
He’ll tell you he has the flu.
But we all know that’s not really true.
Katherine Brooks is brilliant, beautiful, and ambitious. She refuses to let anything—or anyone—derail her path to success. When Kate is hired as the new associate at Drew’s father’s investment banking firm, every aspect of the dashing playboy’s life is thrown into a tailspin. The professional competition she brings is unnerving, his attraction to her is distracting, and his failure to entice her into his bed is exasperating.
Then, just when Drew is on the cusp of having everything he wants, his overblown confidence threatens to ruin it all. Will he be able untangle his feelings of lust and tenderness, frustration and fulfillment? Will he rise to the most important challenge of his life?
Can Drew Evans win at love?
Tangled is not your mother’s romance novel. It is an outrageous, passionate, witty narrative about a man who knows a lot about women…just not as much as he thinks he knows. As he tells his story, Drew learns the one thing in life he never wanted is the only thing he can’t live without.

My thoughts: Ever watched the USA Television series White Collar? Neal Caffrey? Does that ring a bell? Yes ladies! That’s exactly how I pictured Drew Evans. Matt Bomer! He may not be Christian Grey but Drew Evans is his doppelgänger. This novel is made for Matt and just Matt Bomer only. White Collar job? Check. Handsome? Check! Has a great humor? Check. Hot-ness overload? Once again. Check!!!
Men point of view! Reading this had me learning about how a man thinks! I find it really funny because Drew Evans perspective is so true. How men are a douche, how why they don’t call you anymore after they had some ‘fun time’ with you, how they usually call you with the generic term of endearment like baby, honey, sweetheart, but the truth is, they just call you that because they can’t remember your name or actually they don’t even care about your name at all.
Are you getting Drew’s point now?
Drew Evans is living ‘the life’ of a true bachelor; charming his clients in his business that has him in multimillion dollar business deal sealed. He can seduce and get any women he intends to spend the night with. He is surrounded by his loyal friends and family. But just when he thinks he can get anything he wants with the snap of his fingers? It changed. He met Katherine Brooks.
Katherine Brooks a brilliant, beautiful and an ambitious woman. She is Drew’s challenge. Challenge in his career because she is just smart-assy as him. Challenge for his player role because he couldn't easily bed her. Challenge for his ego characteristic. Drew finds her as a challenge he needed to complete. So did he easily completed the challenge and got Kate?
This is the part where I tell you to read this Emma Chase novel and you’ll be laughing how Drew Evans gives us advices how men treat women (and trust me it’s so true!), How they only have women for just ‘one night’ while how sincere they become when the find ‘the right one’.
How will Drew be able to get Kate?
Oh! So many things to say… *sigh* How I really like the part where Drew tells Mackenzie, his niece, a pretty much good advice about a girl wanting to be a princess someday :) yes! Watch out for that advice! It’s one hell one a reality slap for us girls.
So again I’m telling you to read it.

I could kiss those warm lips forever, as I could never get enough. Content to just stay in that position all night, I reluctantly allowed him to pull me into motion and out from between the cars, whining my disapproval.
I don’t know what happened next. There was a quick sound, like an engine backfiring somewhere in the garage. I understood why Nick startled, but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why he stopped dead in his tracks.
“Nick?”
His grip on my hand loosened. I screamed once I realized he wasn't just bending, but keeling over as he hit the car on his way down. Now slumped on the ground, he no longer obstructed my view and I inhaled so sharply my lungs strained in pain.
Him! How did I miss that? The garage was empty, but here he stood, not fifteen feet away with a gun pointed straight at my chest.
But I didn't care. All I could see was Nick crumpled up on the pavement. I fell to my knees gasping, completely losing it when I couldn't turn him around to assess the damage. Was he even breathing anymore? I screamed, heaved and cried all at once like a fucking tsunami hit my chest, but I managed to feel the slightest rise when I placed my hands on his back. For a split second, relief rushed my senses.
My chest constricted when a pair of black sneakers stepped before me. I fearfully looked up, noting the sleek gun held at his side. It was a long look up, and a blurry one at that due to gushing tears. My head shook endlessly, completely disbelieving the sight before me. I had been checking everywhere I went, always looking over my shoulder, thinking that if I just remained vigilant about my surroundings, then he’d never get the jump on me. But here that lunatic stood over me with a gun. And that fucking bastard shot Nick instead of me! In total disbelief, I somehow managed a strained, “Why?”
My eyes were drowning and the world blurred around me. I couldn't really see him, but I recalled his most distinctive features from memory: dirty blond hair, hazel eyes, sharp cheekbones, dimple in the chin. When his gun angled towards me again, a short squeak of terror burst from my throat.

I don't collect guys like that (don't ask what kind of guys I do collect), but when you spot a blonde, tanned, sculpted man with a gorgeous smile and his thumb poking up and practically begging you to stop - you stop."

9. Forever Black (Forever Trilogy #1) by Sandi Lynn: "When Ellery moved to New York with her boyfriend, she thought they’d live happily ever after in their small New York apartment. She never thought he’d pack his bags and leave because he "needed space." With her newfound single status and fear of being alone, Ellery buries herself in her artwork and paintings until one night she helps a mysterious intoxicated stranger get home safely."

10. Before Now (Sometimes Never) by Cheryl McIntyre: "Park Reed is a bastard in every sense of the word. He hasn't always been this way. But after his heart was broken by the only girl he ever loved, being heartless gets him through the day and allows him to fill his nights with the nameless girls he has no intentions of seeing again. He now lives his life following the ever-growing list of "life lessons." Lucy Braden is everything Park is not. She’s sweet, caring, and an all-around nice person. She tries to follow Lucy's Rules to Live By every day."
