This book is my memoir as a family historian, and it follows the stories of all of the women in my matrilineal line, back to my 5th great-grandmother who was born in 1837 in Co. Mayo, Ireland. Each woman has an incredible story to tell, of life and loss and sorrow and joy, but most importantly, of family and love. (less)

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

J.R.R. Tolkien
“It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

“I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.”
Samwise Gamgee

“Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures.”

“The dictates of humanity came in opposition to the law of the land, and we ignored the law.”
