What fictional Character would make a good elf?

Before we begin… Happy Birthday to our creator and editor… Brandy Potter!
Brandy Potter.

So I think the Wesley twins would make great elves. They are mischievous but never cruel. They enjoy life and even have a bit of magic too. They are giving & brave as well. None of their jokes ever really hurt anyone even when they go wrong. They gave Harry the Marauder’s map when he couldn’t leave Hogwarts proving their compassion.

Jack Skellington might do all right as well. After all, with Santa and the other elves helping, he would at least be enthusiastic about it. But he’s not really literary so…

.

[image error]I’m going to pick Phoebe from Bookishly Ever After by Isabel Bandeira. As a book lover, and avid reader Phoebe would be sure to have ideas of books she could give as gifts to suit all tastes.

About the book:

In a perfect world, sixteen-year-old Phoebe Martins’ life would be a book. Preferably a YA novel with magic and a hot paranormal love interest. Unfortunately, her life probably wouldn’t even qualify for a quiet contemporary.

But when Phoebe finds out that Dev, the hottest guy in the clarinet section, might actually have a crush on her, she turns to her favorite books for advice. Phoebe overhauls her personality to become as awesome as her favorite heroines and win Dev’s heart. But if her plan fails, can she go back to her happy world of fictional boys after falling for the real thing?

.I would absolutely love to see Desmin from Even Halos Can Be Crooked by L. M. Schukraft as a Christmas elf. Desmin is a Devils Spawn Minion who is so inappropriate, but so freaking funny! I loved that when he overate in this novel that he had trouble standing up and moving around. Example: “Desmin struggled to gain his feet, cursing his full belly and repeating whoa over and over again.” Makes me laugh every time!

.

Desmin also made an appearance in the recent Halloween novella release, Flying Broomsticks and Buns. So of course, I am just dying to see him in a Christmas themed novella! He would be a wonderful elf!

What is a fictional place that is perfect for a winter vacation?

Brandy Potter.

I love Christmas. It’s my favorite holiday, but honestly that is the ONLY thing I like about winter. I would rather be too hot than too cold. So I chose Lothlorien. A village in the trees lit with magical lights. Where it is always spring! What’s not to love! Plus elvish voices in song all the time awesome!

.

Renee Guill  https://2turnthepagebookreviews.blogspot.com

I’m a spacenut and one of my all time favorite books is the Martian Race by Gregory Benford. I would love to spend Christmas on Mars. I’m weird, I hate snow. lol Plus, you got the red dirt…so you just need the green trees, maybe fake? Lol

Laura Morningstar – https://lauramorningstar.com

[image error]I am a massive geek and adore playing RPG’s and especially Pathfinder. I think it would be amazing to experience winter in Sand Point the town where most adventurers begin. Sandpoint is a small city that exemplifies the diverse people of the country. I think it would be amazing to experience Christmas in a city that has Elves, Gnomes, Halflings, and Goliath’s wandering around as well as humans.

Sitting in the local Tavern in front of a log-fire and listening to the tales of their adventures while preparing for my own.

Erica Robyn – www.ericarobynreads.com

[image error]Being a born and raised Mainer, now living in New Hampshire… when I think about winter holidays, I immediately jump to places with warmer weather! It’s only December and I am already sick of the cold, the ice, and the snow… It’s going to be a long winter!

However, to stick with the holiday spirit, I have to say that I would love to travel to Hogsmeade from the Harry Potter series. How amazing would it be to stop in to all the little shops, eat at the local restaurants or cafes, and snag some butter beer?!

.

I chose Fezziwig from A Christmas Carol. He just seems like he’d be hoot at Christmas. He throws a big party. There is music, food and laughter. Not to mention being with all of those that you care about. My true meaning of Christmas!

Jo Linsdell  www.jolinsdell.com

.

I’m going to pick Sadie from Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella. She might be a ghost, but she would definitely be a lot of fun to hang out with. She’d make sure we dressed up, and danced out hearts out. I’m sure she’d have plenty of ideas for what we could do to pass the holidays and would never let things get boring.

.

Renee Guill  https://2turnthepagebookreviews.blogspot.com

Wow, I have to admit this is a tough one to answer. So many to choose from. Guess I should go with my usual, and say Stephanie Plum(Janet Evanovich). I mean she has such great taste in men, tho not sure who’d she spend the holiday with. Her family is so much fun as well, not your usual boring family. Her sister is pregnant with a guy who’s last name is Kloughn(clown) and is a little person. Then there is Grandma Mazur who goes around carrying a glock, she is such a hoot. Would never be a dull moment.

What Character would you want to be for a day?

I think I would like to be Elizabeth Bennet. I like Elizabeth Bennet, she’s a feisty and intelligent woman with a free spirit and independent will. Plus, there’s the whole getting to be with Mr. Darcy for a day.

If that option is out, second choice, Jane Eyre. same reasons really. Rochester substituting for Darcy of course.

Casia Schreyer        www.casiaschreyer.wordpress.com

Hmm … I don’t know about a specific character but I think I would want to be a moderately well-off Hearth Witch of moderate power in Anne Bishop’s Black Jewel’s universe.

The Black Jewels books are entertaining and show a matriarchal system that has been polluted and tainted by desperate, greedy, power-hungry individuals. There are several cultures of people, some of whom live a “normal” life-span, and others that live thousands of years creating an interesting personal and political dynamic. The strength of a person’s magic depends on how deep their well of power is. Essentially there are marker lines as you go deeper, each one color coded. White is the closest to the top and therefore the least powerful and Black is at the bottom, the most powerful.

The books regale grand adventures and epic clashes between the most powerful of the world’s elite, but I was always more fascinated by the characters that landed about halfway along the power structure, people who had enough power to make life interesting but not enough to be swept full-bore into the politics of the world. I’d like to be able to carry things without pockets and create witch lights and light candles from across the room and such things.

Eline    www.lovelyaudiobooks.info

I want to be the Twenty-Sided Sorceress! It’s a great Urban Fantasy series by Annie Bellet about a young woman who owns a gaming store. You know, card games, board games, video games and comics. Some geek knowledge doesn’t hurt to keep up with the many pop culture jokes. Now, she also happens to be an insanely powerful Sorceress who’d prefer to live her life away from daily mortal peril. Of course, in the series, it soon catches up to her. But for a day, I’d hopefully be relatively safe. It must be amazing to wield that kind of magical power and I want to try it just that once.

What book villain would you not want to meet in a dark alley alone on Halloween??

Video coming

Brandy Potter

.

So because it’s her birthday, and she is now an adult, my daughter gets an answer and her is Nils Bjurman from The Lisbeth Salander series. He is the worst type of male villain. He does unspeakable things to Lisbeth. I won’t describe them here so as not to offend, but if you have seen the movies, trust the book is much more graphic. Since she is Lisbeth, she gets her revenge.

For me though, I almost said Hannibal Lector, but honestly if I wasn’t rude, he’d be kinda cool to meet. (Don’t judge he’s a psych major’s dream). So I went with Kevin Khatchadourian from We Need to talk bout Kevin by Lionel Shriver. Kevin is born a psychopath and through out his childhood, his mother tries to rectify the situation, but no one believes her. The things he does to animals, people and his own family are horrid and even he doesn’t know why he does them.

.
Jo Linsdell             www.jolinsdell.com

.

The villain I’d least like to meet alone in a dark alley on Halloween would have to be Ackerman from the Shepherd series by Ethan Cross. Whilst meeting Francis Ackerman Jr would be bad, his dad would be even worse. This guy is evil in person and the levels of torture he would go to before killing me would be worse than death.

Leslie Conzatti          www.upstreamwriter.blogspot.com

Um… I don’t know of ANY villain I would want to meet alone in a dark alley on Halloween! But given the choice, I’d probably say Raleigh from Madeline Dyer’s Untamed series (The creepiest part is that he 100% believes that he is doing the right thing, committing all these atrocities against humanity…)

Roskelem or Rykledan from Kelly Blanchard’s Chronicles of Lorrek. Both are very powerful and extremely unstable!

Also… An Inquisitor from Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series. Now those guys gave me the heebie-jeebies!

.All three. Since my book ban states that I have to read before I can buy it, it’s usually the library or used books.

My budget also demands that.

.
Jo Linsdell             www.jolinsdell.com

.

My answer is all three. I will buy new if it’s a book I really want, especially if it’s a series. Mostly I look for bargain used books as they’re cheaper though. I love the library and, although I use it more for my kids than for myself due to the limited amount of English language titles they stock (I live in Italy

.

Do you ever unhaul your books?

Brandy Potter

.I do unhaul books. I don’t think it’s right to hoard books I won’t read. Therefore, when my daughter outgrows books, I donate them. Where I live, we have a great place to do so. It’s called The Book Thing. It is a place in Baltimore that allows you take books for free. Teachers use it a lot as do those of limited means in the city. It’s a great place. Here is the link for those of you who may be close to me: http://bookthing.org/

.
Jo Linsdell             www.jolinsdell.com

[image error]One of my life goals is to have a library like the one the beast gave to Belle in Beauty and the Beast (a girl can dream). It’s therefore very rare for me to get rid of any of my books. Should the day come when I decide to unhaul any of my books, I would donate them to the library, school, or friends. Our gym has a small library in the waiting room and take donations too. I don’t think I could ever bring myself to just throw them out.

Casia Schreyer          www.casiaschreyer.wordpress.com

Get rid of books? Of course, all the time. I certainly don’t have room for all of them. First, I generally offer them to the other readers in my family. My grandmother, sister, and father are all voracious readers. Kids books that we no longer need (as my kids outgrow them) are offered to my nieces and nephew, and then offered to the local daycare and my kids’ school librarian. Whatever these people don’t want goes to the local thrift store.

Now for something completely horrendous. I take old Reader’s Digest books (because many thrift stores won’t take them anymore) and I use them for crafts. I’ve made some lovely notebook covers and treasure boxes from the pages and notebooks from the covers. It’s awful, I know, but they’re just going to be thrown out.

What was the last book you read?

Brandy Potter.

[image error]So I just finished The Supernaturals by David L Goleman. I have listened to it so many times on audible, that I finally broke down and bought it. It is a book about “the” Haunted House. It is scary. There aren’t too many “hooky” things about it. But the house eats people. Yes.. the house eats people. It’s great! It actually scared me. Well the first time anyway

What fictional item do you wish you owned?

Brandy Potter

.

The thing that I have ALWAYS wanted is represented lovingly on my blog review pages. I do not have a “stars” system, I have a “tardises” system.

Tardis stands for “Time And Relative Dimension In Space”.

Often described as “bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.” It is actually infinite in size.

It configures and repairs itself, often to the current incarnation of the Doctor’s preference. It travels through space, time and dimensions. More than a machine, it actually has a soul and bonds with it’s users. Therefore the “redecoration” is to please them. It can travel on its own if need be and has saved the Doctor several times. The doors can’t be penetrated, except by the Daleks of course. The ship can teleport and become invisible. The Tardis grants its travellers the ability to speak and understand different languages. Hence why even the companions can understand what is going on when they are on other planets.

This machine is like the ultimate travel need!

Let’s face it, you can’t find all the other cool stuff without being able to travel.

.
Jo Linsdell             www.jolinsdell.com

.

This time of year I’d have to pick the Golden Fleece from Percy Jackson. It’s magic would protect me, and heal me if needed. Cuddling up under a nice blanket is what Autumn is made for, even better when it’s one that would get rid of any viruses or colds.

Casia Schreyer          www.casiaschreyer.wordpress.com

There are some pretty amazing things out there: wands, magic rings, phasers, teleporters … to pick just one thing?

Well, as a writer I think the thing I would want most is the typewriter from Tommyknockers.

Wouldn’t it be grand to just sit there and think your books while the typewriter wrote them for you?

Of course, I’d like all the perks without all the downsides the characters in Tommyknockers have to face.

.

Leslie Conzatti          www.upstreamwriter.blogspot.com

I wish I owned a World Orb from Kelly Blanchard’s Chronicles of Lorrek series!

It enables a magic-user to pass from one end of the kingdom to another…

I would get to meet in-person more of the wonderful people I interact with online, if I had one of those to make it instantaneous!

I have soooooo many, but one that I have now read twice this year is The Obsession by Nora Roberts.

Naomi Bowes follows her father into the woods one night. She discovers that her father is a serial killer and rescues one of his victims. Fast forward a few years and Naomi has changed her name and moved to a small town.  She falls in love with the town of Sunset Cove and it’s residents, especially Xander Keaton. But when women start going missing and bodies start being found, her father’s sin seems to have caught up with her after all.

I’ve read a lot of good books so far this year but my favorite has to be The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. This was Agatha Christie meets Quantum Leap.

About the book:

The Rules of Blackheath

1. Evelyn Hardcastle will be murdered at 11:00 p.m.

2.  There are eight days, and eight witnesses for you to inhabit.

3. We will only let you escape once you tell us the name of the killer.

Understood? Then let’s begin…

Evelyn Hardcastle will die. Every day until Aiden Bishop can identify her killer and break the cycle. But every time the day begins again, Aiden wakes up in the body of a different guest. And some of his hosts are more helpful than others…

The most inventive debut of the year twists together a mystery of such unexpected creativity it will leave readers guessing until the very last page.

Oh goodness! I’ve read so many awesome books already this year, it’s going to be tough to pick just ONE!

But I’d have to say that a key winner I read this year would be What We’ve Unlearned: English Class Goes Punk! By the Writerpunk Press Group–a gang of supremely talented authors who regularly take inventive and skillful re-tellings on familiar stories. They started doing “-punk” (as in “steampunk”, “cyberpunk”, “dieselpunk”, etc.; it’s an artistic aesthetic that has to do with taking the technology of a particular age and accomplishing feats with them that might not have actually happened, but they could; for example, in the book 2,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Jules Verne used the technology available in Victorian times to design a submarine that could navigate under the water–such a machine didn’t exist in that capacity, but it could) re-tellings of Shakespeare plays, and this one takes classic literature and spins it in new and creative ways: Tom Sawyer as a clockwork automaton; Beowulf as a diesel-powered battle between two factions in a vast underground cavern network; A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court as a cyberpunk time-travel adventure–all spectacular stories in their own right, and exceptional nods to the original masters! It was all so good that I wanted to read it all over again as soon as I’d finished!

I have read some pretty awesome books this year, so it’s hard to pick just one, but if I really do have to pick, I am going to say that my favorite book of the year so far is The Wicked Deep, by Shea Ernshaw.

I loved the setting of an eerie coastal town, the small town weirdness, the ghost stories… The murders.Oh, and that twist! The whole novel, like the deadly Swan Sisters, is a beautiful, mesmerizing and dangerous thing. Dangerous as in, you’ll lose a lot of sleep by staying up all night reading it!

If you have not yet picked up The Wicked Deep, stop reading now and get thee to a bookstore! You can thank me later!
